TNA Turning Point Hits
Overall show: It really comes down to match making and then not overbooking the matches with lame run-ins and silly swerves. The Main Event Mafia vs. TNA Originals feud prevented TNA from putting their best wrestlers in the ring together. The only good matches the feud seemed to produce was Kurt Angle vs. fill in the name of the young guy he faced that month. Now we're seeing the better workers wrestle one another and delivering great matches in the ring. Better yet, Vince Russo and his crew are staying out of the way and letting the talent shine.
A.J. Styles vs. Samoa Joe vs. Daniels: A terrific main event match with great work from all three men. I'd love to see them keep the feud alive and come back to this match again in the near future. Better yet, I'm looking forward to Styles vs. Joe, and Styles vs. Daniels in singles matches. They have some work to do with Daniels before he'll be over enough to justify putting him in a singles main event match, but it can be accomplished.
Kurt Angle vs. Desmond Wolfe: I was originally disappointed by the decision to put Angle over, but it may have been the logical move to make if the plan is for Angle to challenge Styles at the next pay-per-view. Furthermore, it would have cheapened Matt Morgan pushing Angle to the limit at Bound For Glory if Wolfe had defeated Angle on this show. That said, it's a shame that they couldn't give Wolfe the big win his character needed to cap off his first month in the company. He could be a legitimate star for this company and he looked impressive in defeat last night, but he needs a win over a top wrestler soon to establish himself as a major player. This was a gem of a match and I'm looking forward to what should be a lengthy feud.
Amazing Red vs. Homicide: A good opening match. Still, I hate seeing the X Division Title defended in the opening slot. If TNA creative believes the X Division produces the best opening matches, then why not book two X Division matches on the show and move the title match to later in the show so that it looks more prestigious?
Tara vs. Awesome Kong: I hated the weak buildup to what should have been the biggest Knockouts match in TNA history. The company should have been building to a Bound For Glory match between these two from the moment that Tara arrived in TNA. The match was entertaining and both women worked really hard, but it just didn't pack the punch that it should have because it wasn't built up properly.
Rhino and Team 3D vs. Matt Morgan, Hernandez, and D'Angelo Dinero: I hated the way they followed up on Morgan's showcase match with Angle by having him in a throwaway six-man tag on the next pay-per-view. Nevertheless, it was a fun match once they got going. I'm not crazy about the usual Vince Russo old guys vs. young guys theme, but Rhino plays his paranoid part well. I'm enjoying Rhino's work today more than I ever have, ECW days included.
Scott Steiner vs. Bobby Lashley: A good brawl with both guys working hard and capturing the vibe that was created by having Steiner go after Lashley's wife. It was also nice to see that Lashley can be pinned in TNA. There was a lot of speculation that he couldn't be pinned in TNA, but that's obviously not the case. Steiner is working his ass off lately. His contract is said to be expiring soon, and I think he's done enough lately to justify a new deal (at the right price).
TNA Turning Point Misses
British Invasion vs. Beer Money vs. Motor City Machine Guns: This is a classic example of creative ruining a match. I watched these three teams have a strong house show match recently, but they never had a chance to shine in this one because of the silly Eric Young and Kevin Nash angle that took place. The three teams looked good before the angle, but it could have been better if they had been given a real finish.
ODB, Sarita, and Taylor Wilde vs. The Beautiful People: The Beautiful People trio just isn't the same without Angelina Love. That says more about the importance of Angelina Love than it does about Lacey Von Erich. Love made the trio successful with her in-ring work and mic skills. Velvet Sky is a great personality, but Love is a complete package. If TNA brings her back, here's hoping they put her back in the group and don't make the mistake of casting her as a babyface in a feud against her former partners.
