WWE Raw Hits

Sgt. Slaughter: Sarge heeling on Canada was a lot of fun. I assume he was there to promote the G.I. Joe movie, but it turned out WWE had a fun plan for him. Fun mic work and a memorable performance from Sarge. It was also good to see WWE announce the main event for next week's show in advance. I thought it was silly for WWE to only advertise Sarge for this show. At the very least, they should have advertised the long awaited return of HBK for this week's show. Sure, they teased it last week without mentioning him by name, but I'm baffled by their decision not to specifically advertise him.

Jack Swagger vs. Evan Bourne: Another quality match that didn't get enough time. It's the same story with these two. It's a shame this three-match series didn't take place on Smackdown where they would have been given more time. By the way, it was nice to hear the live crowd respond so favorably to MVP after the match.

Chris Jericho: Another great performance. I didn't think the fans would turn on Jericho despite his anti-Canada comments, but it was still fun to watch him try. "The worst thing about Canadians is that they're not Americans" was the funniest line I've heard all year.

John Cena vs. Chris Jericho: A fun main event with good work from both men. I still can't believe Jerry Lawler blew the story they set up all night regarding Jericho never beating Cena. The match started and Lawler told us that it was the first time they met in a one-on-one match. It's bad enough that Lawler doesn't watch other WWE programming, but it's obvious he wasn't even paying attention to the storyline they set up throughout the show. Worse yet, how many Cena vs. Jericho matches has he called? Anyway, I really did enjoy the main event and the move to put the tag titles on Jericho is paying off in a big way because Raw would be so much worse without him.

Gail Kim vs. Kelly Kelly vs. Alicia Fox vs. Beth Phoenix: The best women's match on Raw in ages. What's most surprising is that Mickie James, who has been the best worker on the Raw brand, wasn't even involved in the match. I'm already looking forward to the Mickie vs. Gail match.

WWE Raw Misses

DX skits: I'm stunned that this is how WWE chose to reintroduce Shawn Michaels following his hiatus. Those first two clips were embarrassingly atrocious. I have no idea who wrote the skits, but I can't believe Triple H and Shawn Michaels were willing to play along. The original DX was edgy. The current version is just two guys trying too hard to be cute. Those first two clips were as bad as anything that has aired on Raw this year, which is saying a lot. The final clip had a couple of fun moments, but it wasn't enough to save them. This was yet another wasted opportunity for WWE.

Bret Hart tease: Sure, it played into Sarge heeling on Canada, but was it worth getting people excited and pulling the rug out from under them? How many viewers got excited only to turn the channel when it turned out to be another ruse?

Calgary Kid: It was a fun bit and Miz played the persona well, but I can't get over the fact that WWE basically sent the message that their own stipulations don't matter. The Miz is banned from Raw last week, but he returned one week later? Weak. What was the point? I assumed WWE had something better in mind. Given the way it played out, I'm even more frustrated that they didn't give Miz a fluke win over Cena last week. Sure, Cena is the challenger at SummerSlam, but the deck was stacked against him so much that it wouldn't have hurt him to lose the match.

Eugene: A horrible reintroduction of the character. Before I figured out the Calgary Kid was Miz, I was hopeful that Eugene was going to beat the hometown character, turn heel, and reveal that he put one over on the fans by playing a slow character during his last run. Again, I got a kick out of the Calgary Kid and made for a few minutes of interesting television, but I hate the way they reintroduced Eugene and shit all over their own stipulations.
