How I would book the WrestleMania 24 finishes
By Jason Powell Mar 24, 2008 - 12:52 PM

The wait is almost over. WrestleMania 24 takes place on Sunday in Orlando, Fla. at the Citrus Bowl in Orlando. I’m saving my preview and predictions for later this week, but I thought I should throw together the finishes I’d use just in case Vince McMahon can’t decide which direction to go and calls me out of the blue like he did around this time last year.

OK, I’m making that part up about Vince calling, but here are the suggestions I would give ol' Vinny Mac if he were to call. Remember, these are not predictions. Rather, this is how I would book the show.

Randy Orton vs. John Cena vs. Triple H for the WWE Title: Cena is busy making a movie and I think he’d get even more boos if he were to capture the title again so quickly. I know WWE doesn’t mind the mixed reaction, but I don’t think they want their babyface champion being booed by 90 percent of the audience. Hunter will start getting the Cena reception once they put the title on him. It’s inevitable. Plus, keeping the title on Orton by letting him score a clean pin over Cena or Hunter would elevate him to their level. As such, Orton gets my vote.

Edge vs. Undertaker for the World Hvt. Title: Sure, Edge winning would be a big surprise, but I’m not Vince Russo and this is not WCW. I’d rather book a logical finish than swerve everyone just for the sake of swerving them. Taker’s streak is a staple of WrestleMania and it’s just not worth taking away this year. I’d rather build toward Taker’s final WrestleMania (whenever that is) with the streak still in play. Plus, Edge doesn’t have any fresh babyface opponents waiting in the wings. Taker wins.

Big Show vs. Floyd Mayweather: I’m just happy the idea of Steve Austin playing the special referee and giving the Stunner to both fighters never came to fruition. I love Stone Cold, but I think everyone would have seen that finish coming a mile away. I'm assuming they are playing with the restriction is that Show has to win and Mayweather has to be taken care of in the sense that they don’t want him to look bad. I know what to do. Both fighters battle their hearts out and knock each other down at exactly the same time. They both try to get up. Show gets to his feet at nine, while Mayweather falls to the canvas. Yo Adrian! OK, so that one’s been done before.

Let’s just go with Mayweather getting a few good flurries in followed by Show chokeslamming him. Floyd’s posse panics and throws in the towel. The posse runs in, several wrestlers run out, and all hell breaks loose. Give the crowd about 10 minutes of good action and create enough of a melee for SportsCenter to show footage and everyone is happy.

Ric Flair vs. Shawn Michaels: What would I do? I’d keep the damn story line alive unless Naitch wants to call it quits. In January, I’d have Flair announce that he wants to go out on his own terms and therefore struck a deal with Vince McMahon to make WrestleMania 25 his final match. I’d send him out on a retirement house show tour and then hype the hell out of the fact that Flair will have turned 60 years old by the time WrestleMania 25 is here. I'd make money and give the guy the type of sendoff he deserves. Like I said, these are not predictions.

Chris Jericho vs. Shelton Benjamin vs. Mr. Kennedy vs. Carlito vs. MVP vs. C.M. Punk vs. John Morrison in a Money in the Bank ladder match: With Orton retaining, I'd give Punk the win to create a fresh challenger for the WWE Title. If that didn't sit well with certain high ranking family members, then I'd go with the backup plan of having MVP win to keep his momentum going and create a new threat for Undertaker.

Batista vs. Umaga: Batista clean unless the plan is to start a long-term feud between these two after the draft lottery. Michael Cole and Jonathan Coachman can brag about their brand being superior and the folks at MyNetwork would probably be the only people who take them seriously. Hell, MyNetwork is so third rate that Vince could probably talk them into holding a two-hour live prime time special based on Batista’s win. Seriously, folks, it's either that or "Paradise Hotel 2."

Finlay vs. JBL: I’d have Horny turn on his old man for lying to him and everyone else, send him to William Regal’s charm school, and bring him back as Vince McMahon’s version of Mini-Me. Come on, Horny and Vince wearing matching hair and suits, and doing the power walk together would be comedy gold. Or I’d just have Horny get his revenge by helping his latest story line father beat JBL.

24-man battle royal: They’ve turned this into a big man battle royal, so I’d swerve everyone and have Colin Delaney score the upset win. He’d act like the most surprised person in the building and take one hell of a beating afterward so that he couldn’t challenge Chavo for the ECW Title. Chavo could taunt Delaney and pin him quickly to give more time to the matches that people actually care about.

Maria and Candice Michelle vs. Bet Phoenix and Melina. I’d have Awesome Kong run in and destroy everyone other than Phoenix to set up a big interpromotional showdown. No? Fine, then I’d just have the babyface team win (with or without Candice) in a short match.

Check back later this week for my WrestleMania 24 preview and predictions article.
