TNA Impact Hitlist: Kurt Angle, Christian, Rhino, LAX, Booker T, Gail Kim, ODB
By Jason Powell Mar 21, 2008 - 09:56 AM

TNA Impact Hits

ODB and Gail Kim vs. Angelina Love and Velvet Sky: As usual, the women’s segment was one of the highlights of the show. I’m not sure why ODB and Gail are still teaming when the story line is that they don’t get along and this was far from a great women’s match by TNA standards, but this was a competitive match and the announcers did a good job of further establishing Love and Sky as “beautiful people.”

TNA Impact Misses

Promotion for next week’s live show: The announcers finally got around to hyping next week’s live show during the show’s second hour. They even called it the biggest Impact ever. And that might have been effective had they not overhyped so many things in the past. Example: Tenay said earlier in this show that the handshake between Christian and Rhino will be remembered as one of the biggest moments in Impact history.

You just can't overhype various aspects of the product for so long and then expect viewers to take you seriously when it really matters. TNA should have produced ads or at least graphics to promote next week's show. The hype for Sting at the end of the night was a nice tease for next week, but I don't think TNA did enough to establish next week's broadcast as a special event. And if they don't want it to seem special just because it's live, then what was the point of going live to begin with?

Christian and Rhino kiss and make up: Early in the show, Rhino is so pissed at Christian that he can’t even look him in the eye even after Christian reminded him that he sent him a birthday card ever year. As if that line wasn’t corny enough, Rhino asks Christian how he’s going to make things right with his daughter, who saw footage of “Uncle Christian” attacking her father.

One can only hope that Rhino did what any other person who is too lazy to monitor what their children watch on television would do in this situation—contact the Parents Television Council. About five minutes later, Christian saved Rhino from an attack by two heels. Viewers were left to assume that this somehow made things right with Rhino’s daughter because they not only shook hands, they ended up teaming together in the main event later in the show.

Kurt Angle training session: Angle came across intense in the ring and on the mic, and the shot of the bloody tape on his fist was a good visual. I really wanted to like this segment because I’m looking forward to Angle vs. Joe. However, my enthusiasm about that match was created by Angle’s interview with Between the Ropes, not by anything they did during Impact. TNA hasn’t bothered to hype the MMA gimmick that Angle and Joe are doing at the pay-per-view, so this just felt like an awkward MMA segment placed in the middle of a pro wrestling show with no explanation.

Booker T and Sharmell: Booker vows to keep Sharmell out of harms way one second, but begs Robert Roode to join them in the ring for a fight just a few seconds later. As if that’s not confusing enough, TNA now expects us to believe that Jim Cornette has so much stroke that he can book the wives of wrestlers in mixed tag cage matches whenever he feels like it.

Homicide vs. Sonjay Dutt: Let me get this straight. Sonjay feigned an injury, so the bad ass street guy felt bad and gave him a chance to recover, only to be played by Dutt, who rolled him up for the pin. Since when would a bad ass street thug feel sympathy? The old LAX would have exploited the injury and shown no remorse.

I'll have even more to say about this show in the Dot Net Podcast later today.
