WWE Superstars Hitlist: Edge vs. Kofi Kingston, Kane and Big Show vs. C.M. Punk and Rey Mysterio, John Cena's promo for Backlash, Finlay and Hornswoggle say their goodbyes
By Jason Powell Apr 24, 2009 - 10:48 AM

WWE Superstars Hits

Edge vs. Kofi Kingston: I will start taking the Superstars show seriously if they feature quality matches like this every week. I don't expect WWE to deliver pay-per-view caliber matchups, but there's no reason they can't take a mid-card wrestler who can work, match him up with a main eventer, and give them some time to tell a story in the ring like they did with this match. Sure, we knew Edge was going over heading into the pay-per-view, but Kingston looked strong in defeat. Very nicely done.

John Cena's promo: Why was this promo on Superstars? This was A-show material with Cena comparing his match with Edge to there being one final battle between the Yankees and Red Sox. Edge's attack and promo on Monday night were hot, and Cena followed up with a strong promo of his own. Bonus points to Jim Ross for helping set the tone on commentary later in the show by labeling the Cena vs. Edge match an old school fight.

Hornswoggle and Finlay sendoff: No, I didn't get the idea logic behind Finlay singing an Irish song in England either, but it was a cute sendoff for Horny as he heads for Raw. I just wish they wouldn't have sacrificed one of my favorite ECW acts. More on that below.

WWE Superstars Misses

Tyson Kidd and Natalya: So far this week we've had Hornswoggle bite Natalya on the ass repeatedly and pin her, and suffered through Finlay striking Kidd with the shillelagh to set up Horny pinning him. Throw in the line from Finlay about Kidd being a midget and it's been a lousy week for the duo. Sure, the camera time is great, but why make them look so foolish? Kidd vs. Evan Bourne is the most intriguing matchup that ECW has to offer. It's getting good reviews from the correspondents who watched their encounters at the overseas house shows this week, and I honestly have more interest in their feud than anything else the ECW brand has to offer, including Christian vs. Jack Swagger. That's not a knock on the ECW Title match at Backlash. Rather, it says how much I'm looking forward to a Bourne vs. Kidd singles feud.

Big Show and Kane vs. C.M. Punk and Rey Mysterio. Nothing really wrong with the match and this is a minor miss. I'm just not excited about the Kane vs. Punk match that's been added to the pay-per-view. They tried to set it up on Raw and Superstars, yet I don't get the sense that anyone cares. At the very least, I thought they should have let Mysterio look strong against Big Show given the way Show squashed him on Monday. Is anyone else surprised they haven't done more to tease the possibility that Punk could cash in his Money in the Bank briefcase on Sunday?
