WWE "ECW on Sci-Fi" Hitlist: Matt Hardy vs. MVP, Jack Swagger vs. Ricky Ortiz, D.J. Gabriel and Alicia Fox, Mark Henry, Matt Striker's commentary
Dec 3, 2008 - 12:30 PM |
ECW Hits
Matt Hardy vs. MVP: This wasn't the most memorable match of their feud, but it made for a fun Tuesday night television main event. Hardy played his part well by mocking MVP a few times in a display of confidence he gained from coming out on top of their Smackdown feud. Meanwhile, MVP played into his storyline nicely by showing frustration throughout the match. Good work by both wrestlers and I'd love to see them pick up where they left off by keeping this feud alive.
Jack Swagger beats Ricky Ortiz: The most ridiculous unbeaten streak in WWE history is over. I got a kick out of the house show report that indicated Ortiz blew his nose on his rally towel and waved it around while heeling it up when the cameras weren't around. He doesn't click as a babyface right now, but perhaps he could be a better heel. Meanwhile, Swagger is really catching fire as a heel. He's improving each time out and it's easy to see why so many people in WWE are high on him.
MVP: It was nice to see him used as a featured performer on ECW just as he should be on Smackdown. Teddy Long's comments backstage were fun and played into the storyline, and even he noted that he was looking forward to the Matt Hardy vs. MVP match. If they're not going to utilize him properly on Smackdown then I'm all for sending him to ECW and letting him be the big fish in the small pond. One way or another, WWE has to get this guy back on track because he's just too good to waste.
Mark Henry: Very good mic work by Henry. He comes across as a legitimate badass every week. I can't say I'm looking forward to the Henry and Tony Atlas vs. Finlay and Hornswoggle tag match, but Henry did a nice job of building up the tension between he and Finlay, and making the kids fear that Hornswoggle is in danger.
Matt Striker: I know I wasn't the only one who laughed when Striker quoted the "great American Poet Calvin Broadus." Hilarious.
Overall show: ECW continues to be a fun one-hour show. They don't overload the show with comedy skits or long winded promos. Rather, viewers are treated to basic angles and quality wrestling. Sometimes less really is more.
ECW Misses
Ricky Ortiz ripping on Jack Swagger's lisp: A babyface mocking a speech impediment? Really? Only in big bully Vince McMahon's world would this be considered normal good guy behavior.
D.J. Gabriel: I'm not a fan of his dance routine and it doesn't look like they put much thought into his character. That said, I can zone him out and stare at the gorgeous Alicia Fox every week. Dance, Alicia, dance!
