WWE SummerSlam Hits
Chris Jericho and Shawn and Rebecca Michaels angle: Hands down the best angle of 2008. It was great from the start with Shawn and Rebecca setting the tone and convincing people in the building that HBK was truly calling it quits. I think most people expected Jericho to come out, but that didn't stop at least two women from crying and the live crowd from booing HBK's announcement.
Jericho was awesome again. Hell, the guy is awesome every week. Well, unless he's working Kane. Jericho's verbal exchange with HBK was off the charts, and Shawn delivered a classic match about Jericho sitting down his wife and children and telling them that their father will never be Shawn Michaels. And then came the punch. The brilliant, holy shit moment punch to the kisser of Mrs. HBK. Money. Just when you thought this feud couldn't get any better, they turned up the intensity level another 200 notches.
Undertaker vs. Edge: A great Hell in a Cell match and a legitimate match of the year contender. I thought I was completely burned out on hardcore wrestling after sitting through the Hard Justice pay-per-view and then these two guys came along and did hardcore wrestling right. Edge was exceptional with his Joker-like antics. The eyes and especially the repeated licking of the lips was straight out of Heath Ledger's playbook. The post-match chokeslam looked really soft and certainly didn't look like it should have put Edge through the mat. Nevertheless, the pyro shooting through the ring was a nice effect. I'm just curious to see where they go from here now that Edge has gone to WWE's version of hell.
Batista vs. John Cena: This match exceeded my expectations and both guy worked extremely hard to deliver a solid performance. The clean finish was a pleasant surprise, although part of me was hoping that Randy Orton was going to show up and attack one of these wrestlers and reveal that his motorcycle accident was a work. As solid as this match and despite the way it was positioned as a dream match, it was completely overshadowed by the main event and the HBK-Jericho angle. I don't think people will be talking about this match as a major happening when they look back on this show five years ago.
C.M. Punk vs. JBL: I'm still not an advocate of going with this match because I don't think it did much for Punk, who desperately needs to pin a legitimate top guy. The fans view JBL as an uppper-mid-card guy, but they know he's no longer a true top guy. If nothing else, at least he won the match decisively and should be free to move on to a better program.
Triple H vs. Great Khali: Much better than expected. Hunter carried the big man to his best match. Granted, that's not saying much and I still wish they would have gone with a more appealing title match, but this was a solid spectacle match. It will be fun to see who is next in line for a shot at Hunter. My guess is Big Show, who will claim that Hunter didn't beat the true giant of WWE. Again, that's just a guess.
MVP vs. Jeff Hardy: An excellent opener and arguably the third best match on the show. I would normally gripe over the finish, but I was happy to see MVP get a win to extend the feud.
WWE SummerSlam Misses
Mark Henry vs. Matt Hardy: 30 seconds? They spent several weeks building up to a match that lasted 30 seconds and ended in a cheap DQ finish? Better yet, they spent all that television building up a pay-per-view match that lasted 30 seconds, concluded with a cheap DQ finish, and now they're going to give away the rematch on free television this week? The saddest thing is that this is the first time in recent memory that WWE actually made me care about an ECW Title match.
