WWE SummerSlam preview and predictions: Edge vs. Taker in a Hell in a Cell match, John Cena vs. Batista for the first time on pay-per-view
By Jason Powell Aug 17, 2008 - 01:15 PM

The following predictions are made without any inside knowledge of the planned match finishes. In other words, I’m guessing just like you are. Check back tonight for Live Coverage of the WWE SummerSlam pay-per-view.

Undertaker vs. Edge in a Hell in a Cell match: I'd be stunned if this match didn't steal the show. That's party attributable to the fact that the rest of the lineup doesn't feature any slam dunk great matches, but these two have proven repeatedly that they can deliver excellent matches together. I assume Taker will win the match, yet while most of the casual fans will be tuning in for his return, I'm more interested in watching the new version of the Edge character go right at Taker rather than playing the chickenshit heel role.

John Cena vs. Batista: I'm guardedly optimistic about this match. Both wrestlers generally need strong opponents to have strong pay-per-view matches, so it will be very interesting to see what type of match they can put together. The live crowd could make this match with their reactions to both wrestlers. I'm sure WWE officials are hoping there's a mixed reaction. I expect it to be slanted heavily toward Batista. Yes, women and children love Cean, but many of those same women and children also love Batista.

It will also be interesting to see whether Randy Orton makes the surprise appearance that many conspiracy theory experts are predicting. I'm not ruling it out since the motor cycle accident received no media coverage in his hometown, nor did the police department have any record of a motorcycle accident. Will we get New Evolution? Could Orton just ruin the match by attacking both men? I'd rather see a clean finish, but I think WWE will save that for a future pay-per-view main event.

C.M. Punk vs. JBL for the World Hvt. Title: JBL is the perfect opponent for Punk in the eyes of WWE creative because he's not a main event player, meaning Punk can win the match and they don't have to worry about tarnishing one of the guys they perceive as a real star. A win will help Punk, but he needs to defeat a legitimate top star to make the fans take him seriously.

Triple H vs. Great Khali for the WWE Title: Hunter proved on Friday's Smackdown that he can beat up the giant. Why didn't Vince McMahon break out the Hulk Hogan vs. random monster playbook for this program? Hunter is a lock to win this match and retain his title.

Mark Henry vs. Matt Hardy for the ECW Title: The buildup for this match has been surprisingly strong. Henry is getting over as the ECW Champion, and Hardy is cemented in his role as the top babyface of the brand. I expect these two to have a long program together, so there's no need for the title to change hands tonight. Henry retains, but Hardy scores enough nearfalls to look like a legitimate threat to the title.

Kofi Kingston and Mickie James vs. Santino Marella and Beth Phoenix for the Intercontinental Title and the WWE Women's Title: My fear is that the heels win and Beth insists on taking the Intercontinental Title, leaving Santino to work against the women. I'm a Santino fan and I'd love to see his post-match celebration, but I'd rather see the babyface team win than a series of intergender matches on Raw. Granted, Santino facing women could be funny. I'm just not ready for Beth to take over the old Chyna role as the IC Champ. Therefore, I'm hoping the babyfaces win.

Jeff Hardy vs. MVP: Hardy is reportedly nursing a broken neck or an injured elbow. No, really (see the story on the main page). Given the uncertainty regarding Hardy's health, it's hard to say whether this match will live up to my lofty expectations. They didn't deliver a memorable match when they met in an unadvertised match at Judgment Day. Nevertheless, I still believe these two could deliver a hell of a match if Hardy is healthy and they get enough time. I'll take MVP to win the match to extend the feud.

Join me tonight for Live Coverage of the WWE SummerSlam pay-per-view.
