WWE Night of Champions Hitlist: Triple H vs. John Cena, Kofi Kingston wins the Intercontinental Title, Edge vs. Batista, Miz and Morrison vs. Hornswoggle and Finlay, Ted DiBiase's mystery partner
By Jason Powell Jun 30, 2008 - 10:53 AM

WWE Night of Champions Hits

Triple H vs. John Cena: No, it wasn't one of those classic WWE moments like Hulk Hogan vs. Andre the Giant or any of the other examples they used while trying to set the mood for the match. Nevertheless, they delivered a very good pay-per-view main event. WWE did a nice job of establishing mystery regarding the outcomes of the two title matches and I think most viewers probably assumed that Cena was going to win this match after Edge retained his title.

The finish wasn't shocking, but it was surprising. By the way, the decision to give this match to Michael Cole and Jerry Lawler was not a wise one. Granted, the WWE Title is seen as a Raw title, but this was a match between WWE's top top names and it should have been called by the company's best announcer. Overall, though, this match lived up to my high expectations.

Edge vs. Batista: A solid, yet unspectacular match. Both men have have better matches in recent months, but this was still a passable title match. The crowd went bonkers when Batista press-slammed Vickie Guerrero onto the other La Familia family members at ringside and they told a good story with Batista's head injury.

John Morrison and The Miz vs. Finlay and Hornswoggle: This is one match I didn't think I'd be putting in the "Hit" section. I'm still not crazy about the idea of Hornswoggle receiving a tag title match. Title matches should be earned in a storyline sense and it's not like he's done anything to earn a title match. That being said, this turned out to be an entertaining opening match. The live crowd was into the action and all four wrestlers tried hard and give the fans plenty to cheer about.

Kofi Kingston vs. Chris Jericho: It would be nice if someone would explain what Kofi did to earn an Intercontinental Title match. After all, the last time Raw viewers saw him he was getting roughed up and pinned by JBL. Granted, he's been successful in ECW, but it still seemed odd that he lost his first Raw match and was rewarded with a title match six days later. That being said, it's good to see them push a fresh face on Raw and continue to shake things up.

Cody Rhodes revealed as Ted DiBiase's mystery partner: Sure, it was predictable in the sense that many of us called that turn shortly after DiBiase started teasing his mystery partner. Even so, I'm happy they followed through the with Cody turn and didn't try to swerve everyone. I think this team has potential and I'm looking forward to seeing whether this is the beginning of a second generation heel faction.

WWE Night of Champions Misses

Vince McMahon angle followup: This is a big night for WWE because the followup to the stage collapse angle has been lousy. They waited 30 minutes to even mention the angle and even then it was a brief announcement made by Mike Adamle and then Tazz offered a rough segue into the ECW Title match.

Chavo Guerrero: The live crowd could not have cared less when his music played and he walked through the curtain. Chavo is a good worker, but there's just no excuse to continue featuring him as a major player who warrants all these title matches. Sidekick to Edge? Sure. I'm even fine with Vickie Guerrero using her status as the Smackdown general manager to give the undeserving Chavo title matches, but it's not being portrayed that way. There's just no excuse for giving Chavo a pay-per-view title match on the same show that Jeff Hardy and MVP were relegated to dark match duty.

JBL promo: The heel JBL doesn't like the Dallas Cowboys or the Dallas Mavericks. The problem is that most people outside of Dallas don't care for the Cowboys or the Mavericks. Don't even start with the America's Team stuff. This was a local promo on a pay-per-view broadcast. I don't mind a line or two about the host city's sports teams because it's fun if the heels come up with a creative way to badmouth the local squads, but this seemed to be the heart of JBL's promo.
