WWE Smackdown Hits
MVP and Vickie Guerrero verbal exchange: A good segment with MVP coming across somewhat sympathetic while still acting cocky enough to maintain his heat. As I wrote in my live coverage review last night, I can't tell whether he's being set up for a babyface run on Smackdown or for a move to Raw. Vickie is getting better on the mic. More importantly, the crowds continue to boo the hell out of her.
Vladimir Kozlov vs. Jamie Noble: This was better than the usual Kozlov squash. Noble worked in a submission attempt that the announcers called nicely. I don't think the live crowd thought Noble had a chance of winning, though. WWE should seriously consider letting a few underdogs win with submission holds just to establish that anyone can win if they lock in the right hold. I think the fans would totally buy into it given the popularity of MMA. If nothing else, it would make the fans take some of the submission holds more seriously instead of blowing them off as rest holds.
Great Khali squashes Charles Robinson: Well, it's was something different. On a show that felt like the creative staff was going through the motions with several segments, it doesn't take much to please me. Lil' Naitch did a nice job of selling the chop and the head vice.
Edge named special referee: I like the way they set it up by having Robinson taken out by Great Khali, which opened the spot for Edge. Sure, Vickie could have been a bitch and just named Edge the special referee at the start of the show, but I applaud them for taking the creative route to get there. Nicely done.
WWE Smackdown Misses
Finlay vs. The Miz: I'm so bored by the Hornswoggle and Finlay routine. I enjoyed Finlay as a brawler and now he's turned into a kid act. I'm praying they don't put the tag titles on these two. I enjoyed the Little Bastard, but Hornswoggle's comedy antics are tired. I'm fine with WWE catering to kids, but the trick is to do it in a way that doesn't scare off the adults.
Bam Neely: A forgettable singles debut. He was never flashy when he was on the indy scene in Minnesota, but he had more effective power moves than he showed in his match against Matt Hardy last night. The chin locks felt like they went on forever and looked like filler more than punishing holds that were wearing down Hardy.
