WWE Smackdown Hitlist: Batista, Edge, Vickie Guerrero, Big Show, MVP, Cousin Sal, Santino Marella
Jun 7, 2008 - 01:11 PM

WWE Smackdown Hits

Batista and Nunzio and Colin Delaney and Funaki vs. Edge and Chavo Guerrero and Zach Rdyer and Curt Hawkins: Good use of the undercard acts and it played in nicely with Vickie Guerrero stacking the deck against Edge's challengers. Although Vickie made the call, there was plenty of heat on Edge and it appears the creative staff is making an effort to make him out to be a bigger villain that Vickie. For instance, the announcers had good things to say about her after she announced the formation of the new Divas Title. This is purely speculation, but I wouldn't be surprised if this is the first step toward shifting her to an eventual babyface role once her relationship with Edge inevitably falls apart.

Edge's champagne celebration: A fun segment with Edge hamming it up like only Edge can. Throw in the wedding announcement and Batista's interruption/challenge and this was a fun segment.

Vickie Guerrero announces formation of a new Divas Championship: Good call. The popularity of women's wrestling is rising and WWE has just enough talented in-ring performers to have a title on each brand. Part of me wishes they'd put the best workers on the same brand, but at least the Smackdown women finally have something to feud over.

MVP in the luxury box: I'm a little concerned because the last guy who sat in a luxury box by himself is now serving a 60-day suspension. I wonder if they're taking whatever storyline they had in mind for William Regal and transferring a variation of it to MVP. I just hope they're not planning to turn MVP babyface. I'm sure it's tempting because I think he would move some merchandise, but he has the potential to emerge as a main event heel for years to come. He's ready for that role and now it's just a matter of time before the creative staff pushes him the way they should.

WWE Smackdown Misses

Big Show: He carried Floyd Mayweather to an entertaining match at WrestleMania 24. His reward? Feuds with Great Khali, Mark Henry, Kane, and a spot in an ECW Singapore Cane match. WWE needs fresh main eventers and they paid Big Show a lot of money to return, yet they're just letting him waste away in forgettable mid-card programs.

Cousin Sal: Was Conan O'Brien's nephew busy? Santino Marella did what he could to make this entertaining, but there was absolutely zero buzz regarding this match because no one cares about Sal. At least Santino got to work with Piper. Better yet, Sarah Silverman showed up.
