TNA Impact Hits

Final Hype For Hulk Hogan and Abyss vs. Ric Flair and A.J. Styles: I wasn't too excited about the match when it was first announced. However, the build over the last two weeks has been strong. Last night was particularly good and left me looking forward to Monday night. I still don't feel like they getting as much out of Flair returning to the ring in North America for the first time since WrestleMania 26. It doesn't feel like the historical moment that it could have, yet I am looking forward to this main event much more than the John Cena vs. Vince McMahon match that Raw is countering with. By the way, I'm still laughing at Flair's line about giving Hogan his choice of the four women he brought to the ring and then telling Abyss, "You, moron, get nothing." Classic.

A.J. Styles vs. The Pope vs. Desmond Wolfe vs. Abyss: TNA did a nice job of tying in the announcement of this match with the hype for Monday's main event. The announcement was made while there was plenty of star power in the ring and they hyped the match consistently throughout the program. The match was solid and I like the way they gave Pope an strong excuse for tapping out. Under the circumstances, I didn't mind seeing the No. 1 contender to the TNA Title lose. My only complaint is that TNA didn't do a good job of putting over Pope's injury until moments before the match.

Mike Tenay and Taz: Bonus points to the announcers for going above and beyond to make it seem like Styles was at risk of losing the title in the four-way match. It sounds so basic, but there are too many times when pro wrestling announcers only make it seem like the champ is at risk when there's a near fall. In this case, Tenay and Taz stressed before and throughout the match that the deck was stacked against Styles.

Beer Money vs. Matt Morgan and Hernandez vs. Motor City Machine Guns vs. Generation Me: The dynamic between Matt Morgan and Hernandez is fun and I'm enjoying what appears to be a long breakup angle. Herandez is really stiff on the mic these days, but he does a good job with his facial reactions to Morgan one upping him. It's encouraging to see Beer Money get consistent camera time again. James Storm and Robert Roode are the best tag team in the business today, and TNA should feature them prominently. Meanwhile, it's a shame that the Motor City Machine Guns and Generation Me are still treated like undercard scrubs. Give them something to feud over and turn them loose.

The Beautiful People beat up Angelina Love: I'd still prefer to see Love as part of the group because she really made it tick. That said, they did a great job of making Velvet Sky's attack on Love seem sadistic by having Lacey Von Erich and Madison Rayne question whether she was going too far. If you take out their reaction, it's just another beatdown angle and no one thinks twice about it.

TNA Impact Misses

Additional hype for Monday night: TNA did a good job of spotlighting the move to Mondays via various promos, graphics, and the commentators stressing it. The problem I had with the hype is that they didn't tease more for the show. I understand basing the majority of the hype on the main event tag match, but the only additional thing they teased was a promo by Kevin Nash and Eric "Grease Lightning" Young. If TNA didn't want to hype matches, why not spend time getting viewers excited about the possibility of additional surprises by reminding them of how many huge names showed up the last time they went live?

Mick Foley skits: Foley had a few of funny one-liners, but all the skits felt like something straight off the Wrestlicious show. It's good to see TNA is finding non-wrestling roles for Foley because his in-ring appearances should be limited so they actually mean something, but TNA has to realize that less is more both in terms of how frequently he wrestles and in how much time they give skits like these.

Mr. Anderson and Kurt Angle: Anderson's spoof of Angle didn't work because there are only so many things one can spoof when it comes to his on-air character. I don't blame them for not bringing up Angle's admission of past pill abuse or his various legal troubles or even the situation with Karen Angle. However, those are the issues that would have made the spoof personal and effective more than cute and lighthearted.

Jeff Jarrett skits: I enjoyed the dynamic between Jarrett and Eric Bischoff, but they've lost me over the last couple weeks by having Jarrett flip burgers and clean bathrooms.

Rob Terry vs. Doug Williams: A champion vs. champion match featuring two titles and two title holders that no one cares about. The Global Title is worthless because of the way it was introduced. TNA would have a much easier time establishing a new title than trying to salvage the Global belt. I want to care about the X Division Title. I really do, but TNA makes it impossible by never featuring the X Division wrestlers prominently and by putting the X Title on the bland half of The British Invasion. Williams is a strong worker and all, but they've never done anything to establish a character for him.
