11/10 One Shots (Thursday Edition): The Dot Net staff give their quick thoughts from the previous week in WWE, TNA, MMA and indy wrestling
Nov 10, 2011 - 03:05 PM

Welcome to the Wednesday One Shot. Each week, we will present a quick "one shot" thought from each staff member about the previous week in each of the following areas: WWE, TNA and Other (MMA, Indies, etc).

WWE

Will Pruett (Twitter - @itswilltime): The overseas week coming two weeks before their second biggest show of the year did this company no favors. WWE needs to take themselves seriously right now as opposed to just coasting by with a house show on TV. The Rock's return should bring a lot of eyes to the product, but I'm afraid of what happens if The Rock cannot convince those people to buy Survivor Series.

Jake Barnett (Twitter - @barnettjake): WWE continues to lose me with the lack of logic on Raw specifically. Why should I believe the Rock is necessary for John Cena to overcome Truth and Miz when he can pretty much take care of them himself? Also, the lack of attention paid to any other angle besides The Rock and Triple H’s feuds is concerning to me. If the New Talent Initiative mostly consists of bringing back older stars, I think WWE might need to examine their naming conventions.

Mark Gessnar (Twitter - @MarkGessner): While I was a big proponent of getting Zack Ryder on WWE television aside from Superstars, I don't know if doing it at the expense of Miz and Truth is a good decision. Ryder can be a great upper mid-card, Intercontinental/United States Champion level wrestler but I don't see him as a main eventer at this point. If Cena could nearly beat Truth and Miz with Ryder, why would he need The Rock at Survivor Series.

Ryan Kester (Twitter - @TheRyanKester): WWE continues to book on the fly and the seams are really starting o show. With Brodus Clay's debut being late and the Michael Cole challenge postponed two weeks, it's painfully obvious that WWE has no real long term plan for their product.

Chris Shore (Twitter - @TheShoreSlant): Raw was once again not so bad as it was pointless and a tad boring. There were certainly some good moments, but the overall feel of the show is one of non-importance. This is what I mean when I talk about the Rock's star shining so brightly that it drowns out everything else. It isn't so much his fault as it is one of creative's. The Rock doesn't actually need a story, he's the Rock. People will tune in to watch him eat a ham sandwich. Guys like Dolph Ziggler, Kofi Kingston, and Cody Rhodes need those stories, just like Rock did all those years ago. WWE needs to shift focus away from the Rock and onto those who will be here after Rock moves on again.

TNA

Will Pruett: Although it has gone at a breakneck pace, TNA still has the best story in wrestling with Robert Roode and James Storm. All of the pieces are in place now for them to tell this effectively. Now is their opportunity to do so.

Jake Barnett: Robert Roode is now a heel champion. James Storm is now a hot babyface chasing after him. That is good wrestling booking. The scenic drive through the desert of BS is took to get there was not. Let’s hope the future of this storyline is more polished and they have the patience to do it right. *Fingers Crossed*

Mark Gessnar: If Impact is going to have an overrun, they need to mention that the week before, if not earlier. When every Impact ends at 11, there's no reason to set your DVRs to tape later. Last Thursdays show I got the majority of Storm vs. Roode but it got cut off at 11 when Roode had Storm in a crossface. From what I saw, it was a very good main event but I would have liked to see the conclusion.

Ryan Kester: I continue to look forward to next week's Impact. Say what you will about TNA rushing through the Roode and Storm feud, they have at least managed to grab my attention and entertain me with what I have seen so far.

Chris Shore: After watching the James Storm vs. Bobby Roode title match this past week, I am more convinced than ever that TNA left money on the table with how they got to this point. This may have been the plan all along, or it may have been a clunky transition because of the creative change. Whatever it was, a two week title reign for Storm before losing to Roode is some of the worst television I have ever seen. This may yet be a great angle, and I really think they can salvage some of it. But it will never reach the height it could have reached had the past few weeks gone differently.

Other (MMA, Indies, Etc)

Will Pruett: ROH - This week's ROH show just felt weird. There was an awful lot of talking from people who aren't good at it. Follow that up with the awkward Kevin Steen promo and I was unimpressed. It all felt like a show from the 1980's and not in a good way. ROH may think that it is good to be a throwback, but it is not. I have DVD's to watch the shows from the 1980's. ROH needs to deliver a modern wrestling show.

Jake Barnett: ROH – This past week’s ROH broadcast was a little hard to wrap your head around, due to an almost inexplicable amount of talking in a wrestling heavy promotion. What is ROH? What is their direction? As the company moves forward I hope they are able to forge their own identity instead of borrowing the bad ideas (i.e. Long talking segments, show pacing) from other more well known promotions.

Mark Gessnar: UFC - UFC on Fox this Saturday will without a doubt be one of the top two most important shows in the companies history. While The Ultimate Fighter season one finale increased their audience and exposure exponentially, Saturday's show will be available to a larger audience and hopefully bring even more attention to a fan base that is still growing.

Ryan Kester: UFC - UFC 138 was quite the pleasantly surprise. Going in, the card didn't seem all that impressive, but the fighters showed up ready to work their craft and almost every single fight ended up with a definitive finish.

Chris Shore: CHIKARA - I am very excited to be covering CHIKARA's first iPPV this Sunday. CHIKARA is well run, and is by far the most fun I have ever had at a live event. I have said many times that the Throwbacks vs. Los Ice Cream in NC is my favorite match of the year. And it isn't even close. But I am not so sure that the great live act that is CHIKARA will translate as well to TV. The DVDs I have seen are nowhere near as impressive as the live events. With the right camera and audio work, it could be fantastic. My fear is that it will look like every other indy group out there, and if there is one indy group that is truly different, it is CHIKARA.

Is WWE Raw expanding to three hours per week a good move for business?
Yes. It's an extra hour of exposure and presumably a better programming fee.
No. This is overexposure. See WCW Nitro.
