Tonight's Raw provided the Raw Moment of the last five years. On top of that it featured some strong Elimination Chamber hype and for the first time, it felt like we were getting close to Wrestlemania. It was a fairly classic show and definitely worth watching (especially the final 20 minutes).
- What a bad and campy start to the show. Wouldn't it mean more if John Cena talked about what the WWE Championship meant to him? Isn't the championship more important to John Cena than clowning around about Valentines Day?
- We so rarely see wrenches used as weapons in wrestling anymore. It seems like such an obvious weapon since it's needed to build the ring. Kudos to CM Punk and the hidden guy with the Nexus arm band for using the wrench.
- The World Heavyweight Championship situation managed to fill quite a few goals on Raw this week. It got Alberto Del Rio on the show. It promoted this week's major episode of Smackdown. It alerted Raw viewers to the events on the blue brand (something that does not happen often enough). Nice work in this segment.
- It may be anticlimactic, but showing Undertaker in the 2-21-11 package actually worked for me. These packages have garnered a lot of buzz. They are certainly better than the old fashioned "turn out the lights and hit the gong" treatment that Undertaker usually gets. I'm very much looking forward to his return next week. As for the rumors of others in the cabin, I'll believe it when I see it next week.
- The Diva's Championship match just didn't matter tonight. I don't understand why it was a lumberjill match or why it was so short. This entire division is just extremely blah.
- Nice to see Sheamus getting his heat back after Mark Henry took him out last week. It's amazing now much more major league he looks when he's not wearing the king outfit.
- Yes ladies and gentlemen, Alex Riley did ask if he could "sports entertain and commentate." I understand not wanting to use the words wrestling most of the time, but this is just ridiculous.
- I hate seeing Miz vs. Daniel Bryan given away with no buildup. I also hate it when commentators call a wrestler who is executing exciting audience that gets the crowd fired up boring. The first is excusable because of the Jerry Lawler situation, but the second is never excusable.
- A year ago, I wouldn't have thought it possible, but The Miz and Daniel Bryan really mesh well in the ring. The Miz needed that clean win and Daniel Bryan lost nothing because he had a truly competitive match on Raw that went over three minutes (something his matches haven't done lately).
- WWE, please allow me to thank you from the bottom of my heart for not exploiting the death of Jerry Lawler's mother. My best to Lawler and his family in this extremely tough time.
- R-Truth has apparently lost his entrance privileges. I couldn't be happier. I also would have rather seen the singles match between John Morrison and Truth.
- The Valentine's Day skit was silly, but it did not last as long as it has in years past and it also did not recur. Those are both reasons why I'm not upset about getting that segment.
- Just when I thought Sheamus was getting his heat back, he loses to Randy Orton in five minutes. That was the last thing he needed. Also, The Nexus being beaten up by Randy Orton and John Cena was the last thing they needed. Aren't heels usually supposed to get heat going into a pay-per-view?
- The eruption at the Honda Center when The Rock's music hit sounded like it was on par with Triple H's MSG return in 2002. What an ovation and what a Raw moment!
- Was anyone else laughing hard when the censors kept missing that actual word "ass" and instead censoring non-offensive words?
- What a promo. With out hesitation I'll say that it was the best promo we've seen on Raw in almost half a decade. The crowd was as into it as any crowd I've ever seen. The Rock seemed genuine when he said he was back for the fans.
- Rock's John Cena comments were very interesting to me. It looks like he will be doing something during the assumed John Cena vs. Miz match, which instantly boosts that main event from okay to classic in the making.
- That promo gave me chills and reminded me that moments like that are why I am a wrestling fan. That return was every bit the moment it was built up to be (and more). I cannot wait to see The Rock at Wrestlemania.
- Here's the only problem with last night's Raw, it sold Wrestlemania to viewers at the end of the show. Elimination Chamber is this Sunday, but it wasn't mentioned (also Smackdown #600 was shafted at the end). The Rock's appearance probably had to happen now because they are in Anaheim, so this couldn't really be changed. On the flip side, hopefully excitement about the product and Wrestlemania leads to Elimination Chamber buys.
This a a really nice show from top to bottom. Even the stuff that I complained about wasn't that bad. As I said above, by the end of this show, I remembered why I am a wrestling fan, which is the best thing an episode of Raw (or any other wrestling show) can do.
