UFC 100 PPV Quick Results: Brock Lesnar vs. Frank Mir for the Undisputed UFC Hvt. Championship, Georges St. Pierre vs. Thiago Alves for the UFC Welterweight Title
Jul 12, 2009 - 12:00 AM |
The following are the ongoing results of the UFC 100 pay-per-view, which is taking place tonight Saturday night in Las Vegas, Nev.
1. Yoshihiro Akiyama defeated Alan Belcher via split decision. Very good striking action in round one. Things slowed down after that. It was a tough fight to score, but the live crowd seemed surprised that Akiyama had his hand raised.
2. Dan Henderson knocked out Michael Bisping in round two. Both fighters remained on their feet and traded punches in the first round. Henderson landed the bulk of the punches. In round two, Henderson caught Bisping with a highlight reel knockout punch. He pounced onto Bisping, who was already out, and delivered another punch before the referee stepped in. Great knockout.
3. Georges St. Pierre dominated Thiago Alves and won via unanimous decision to retain the UFC Welterweight Championship. Yawn. Alves gave it his best, but GSP rolled to an easy win. If this was like every boxing pay-per-view I watched during the '80s, the judges probably would have screwed GSP. I don't miss that crap. This was a no-brainer and even Alves raised GSP's hand once the final horn sounded.
4. Brock Lesnar defeated Frank Mir via second-round knockout to win the Undisputed UFC Hvt. Championship. The ref told the fighters to touch gloves before the fight, but Brock walked away. Ground and pound for Brock in round one. He dominated Mir and left him looking a lot like he did after their first fight. Mir landed a knee to Lesnar's head in the second round, but Brock took him down and continued to ground and pound.
The Vegas crowd was pissy and didn't like Lesnar's ground and pound. They even chanted, "Stand them up." Lame chant given that Lesnar was still landing punches to Mir's head. Brock landed a flurry of punches while on top of Mir and the referee eventually jumped in and stopped the fight.
The fans booed Lesnar afterward. He responded by giving them a double middle finger salute. Hilarious. Joe Rogan interviewed Brock afterward. Lesnar said Mir had a horseshoe in his ass the last time they fought. He said he took it out and beat him over the head with it.
Brock encouraged the crowd to boo him and they responded. He said he was going back to his hotel to have a Coors Light. He stressed that he was drinking Coors because Budweiser won't pay him any money. He said he was going to hang out with friends and family, and added that he "may even get on top of my wife tonight."
Powell's POV: Hilarious antics from the natural born heel. The MMA purists obviously disagree. They'll claim they were booing him because of the poor sportsmanship he showed, but they were booing him from the moment he walked into the building. He was a pro wrestler and that drives them nuts. Never mind the fact that he was an NCAA wrestling champion. As I said in Dot Net Audio, Lesnar is UFC's Mike Tyson. You either love the guy or you hate him. There's no in between with Lesnar, and he definitely knows how to sell fights.
5. Jon Fitch defeated Paulo Thiago via unanimous decision. Thiago caught Fitch in a submission choke hold early, but never quite locked it in. Fitch eventually escaped and then controlled the rest of the fight. There wasn't much energy left in the building, as I assume most people split or were simply drained after Lesnar vs. Mir.
Powell's POV: Overall, a fun show. No major upsets, though. Getting back to Brock, the fans who booed him would not have complained if Mir had been grounding and pounding Brock in the same manner. Maybe it's a Minnesota or pro wrestling bias, but the MMA purists come across like hypocrites. Of course, he fed into it and gave them reasons to hate him afterward.
It wasn't the most exciting fight of the night in terms of style, but it was still a lot of fun to watch due to the crowd's reaction to Lesnar. He used the same ground and pound approach with Heath Herring, but the fight was in Minnesota so he was a hero. The style isn't flashy, but he'll continue to sell fights with his natural heel charisma. Thanks for following along with me tonight.
