UFC 98 results: Rashad Evans vs. Lyoto Machida for the UFC Lt. Hvt. Championship, Matt Serra vs. Matt Hughes, Powell's thoughts on the two big fights
May 24, 2009 - 12:15 AM

The following are the results of the UFC 98 pay-per-view, which took place on Saturday night in Las Vegas.

-Frankie Edgar defeated Sean Sherk via unanimous decision.

-Chael Sonnen over Dan Miller via unanimous decision.

-Drew McFedries defeated Xavier Foupa-Pokam via first-round knockout.

-Krzysztof Soszynski beat Andre Gusmao via first-round knockout.

-Matt Hughes beat Matt Serra via unanimous decision.

-Lyoto Machida defeated Rashad Evans via second-round knockout to win the UFC Lt. Hvt. Championship.

Powell's POV: I stopped by the bar on my way home from the Minnesota Twins game (looking for the sweep over the Brewers!) and caught the last three fights. Hughes vs. Serra was underwhelming given the years of tension between the two, but the judges made the right call. Serra didn't do enough offensively. It wasn't a horrible fight, it just wasn't as much fun as I hoped it would be.

Meanwhile, Machida dominated Evans, who looked leery of his opponent's striking ability from the start. Machida won the first round handily. Machida hit Evans with a nice flurry in the second round, but Evans answered with two or three nice punches of his own. However, that was the only notable offense that Evans had during the fight. Machida rocked him in the second round and knocked him out to win the title in a very impressive performance. For a full report on the show, check out Jamie Penick's report at MMATorch.com.
