The Affliction MMA promotion is closing up shop, according to Kevin Iole of Yahoo Sports. The company cancelled the "Trilogy" pay-per-view event that was scheduled for Aug. 1, and has since opted to drop out of promoting fights. Iole reports that Affliction clothing will once again become a UFC sponsor. To read the story, visit Yaoo.com.

Powell's POV: The move to give up promoting fights seemed inevitable. The company overpaid fighters who had limited options, and it's two pay-per-view events did not draw well. It remains to be seen what will happen with the contracts of the fighters. My guess is that UFC won't have interest in picking up many of the big name contracts simply because of the money it would cost. After all, if the fighters become free agents, their options will be limited and UFC could presumably sign most at a reduced rate.
