Powell's review of HBO "Real Sports" feature on Dallas Page, Scott Hall, and Jake Roberts
Aug 19, 2013 - 04:22 PM

HBO's "Real Sports" feature on Dallas Page, Scott Hall, and Jake Roberts will premiere on Tuesday night at 8:00 p.m. CT. The feature begins with the trio watching a WCW match involving Page and Hall. Roberts's substance abuse issues are addressed and he breaks down crying while talking with HBO correspondent Frank Deford.

The focus shifts to Page's yoga program, the free classes he gives in his home, and the DVDs he markets. Deford notes that Page took the troubled Roberts in and helped him clean up and lose 50 pounds. Due to the success Roberts had, they shift to Page's desire to help Hall.

The Youtube footage that Page released of the phone conversation he and Roberts had with a belligerent Hall was shown. "I'm dying," Hall said during the call. Hall told Deford he doesn't remember the conversation and said he went through in-patient rehab a dozen times before he moved in with Page. Hall said he has been clean ever since and, like Roberts, he is also down 50 pounds. Hall was shown training his son Cody Hall, and Scott said he's almost living vicariously through him. Deford notes that Hall and Roberts know their battles with substance abuse are not over, yet they both seem happy.

Powell's POV: This is a good piece as one would expect from Deford and the "Real Sports" team, but there's not much new for wrestling fans who have been following the story of Page, Hall, and Roberts online. Of course, the piece will air on HBO, meaning the average viewer may have no clue that Hall and Roberts have battled substance abuse issues or that they are working with Page to stay clean.

It's well deserved good exposure for Page, and it's nice to see Hall get some positive national exposure following the depressing "E:60" piece that chronicled his substance abuse issues in October 2011. HBO sent us a screener of the show that included the documentary portion of the show, but I am looking forward to hearing the studio conversation that host Bryant Gumbel has with his correspondents when the show airs on Tuesday night at 8:00 p.m. CT on HBO. By the way, the show's final piece on a Scotsman's battle with WWE Hall of Famer Donald Trump is fantastic.
