Indy group doesn't allow African American wrestlers or fans following alleged white supremacist threat
Aug 13, 2012 - 10:22 AM |
A Denton, North Carolina independent promotion cancelled bookings for a African American wrestlers and would not allow African American fans to attend a June event at an elementary school. "I was told I couldn’t go because they didn’t want any black athletes in Denton," wrestler James Brody told WCNC.com. "I was pretty angry at first but, you know, I prayed about it and thought about it and I thought they don't want me there that's their loss not mine."
The promoter, who isn't named in the story, claimed he received a text message from an unknown number that read: "Do not bring no blacks into Denton. You have been warned. The White Knights." Read more on the story at WCNC.com/news/local/Promoter-tells-black-wrestlers-to-stay-away-after-KKK-threat-165636266.html. [Thanks to Dot Net Member Rich Conner]
Powell's POV: I'm stunned that the promoter wasn't named in the story. Anyway, he claims he was told by police that he should pay attention because "those boys mean business." However, the police chief is quoted in the story as saying he didn't even know about the event or he would have assigned an officer. The story also states that there are no White Knights based in the Carolinas. The population of the town is 1,636 caucasians, and only two African American residents. Guess where I won't be spending my next vacation?
