Former WCW and WWE announcer Tony Schiavone discusses his career in wrestling and his current broadcasting job
Aug 31, 2008 - 01:19 PM

Former WCW and WWE play-by-play broadcaster Tony Schiavone said he'll take being a wrestling announcer "to his grave" during an interview posted on the Gwinnett Braves minor league baseball website. "I don't have a problem with it," Schiavone said. "Wrestling can either help or break your career. I think it helped mine. I've been able to survive and move on."

Although he called some tremendous matches over the years, Schiavone didn't mention any that stood out to him when he was asked to name the best match he called. "The one the producer in my ear told me to say at the time," he said regarding the best match. "A lot of the stuff I said was told to me to say. It was all part of the script. I was just the mouthpiece for better or worse." To read the full interview, visit GwinnettBraves.com.

Powell's POV: Schiavone current serves as the radio play-by-play voice for the Braves' Triple A affiliate. He didn't say anything negative about pro wrestling, but he made it clear that it was nothing more than a job to him. Former colleagues have noted that Tony became bitter and detached during his final years in the business. I'm happy he was able to move on and that he was able to find work calling baseball games because that's his true passion, but it's a shame he seems to have lost whatever passion he had for pro wrestling.
