Report by Saul Stradlin
Pro Wrestling Guerrilla ran Night 2 of the DDT4 tournament in Burbank on Sunday night. Before the show started, PWG Commissioner of Food and Beverages Excalibur came out and talked about the events that transpired the night before. During this promo, Excalibur was selling the effects of Kevin Steen's three Package Piledrivers from the night before. He also mentioned that Super Dragon would be out of action because he suffered a concussion, and that Ronin was dealing with a knee injury.
1. Jack Evans and Roderick Strong over Los Luchas (Phoenix Star and Zokre) to advance in the finals of the tournament. Really good match that saw Jack Evans bust out many eye popping high flying moves. The match ended with the Ode To The Bulldogs with Jack and Roderick getting the victory. Through out the match, the PWG staff could be seen addressing several technical issues with the building. After the match, there was a quick break to fix the issues that were going on.
2. Davey Richards over Austin Aries. Great match. Their first singles encounter took place at the 2006 Battle Of Los Angeles that saw Davey Richards go over. The crowd was really hot for the finishing sequence, that saw Davey get the victory with a Texas Cloverleaf. After the match, Davey got on the mic and proclaimed that it felt good to be home. He also mentioned that in June, he'll be going to Japan for three months, and that when he returns, he'll be gunning for the PWG World Championship.
3. El Generico and Kevin Steen over Kagetora and El Blazer to retain the PWG World Tag Team Titles and to advance in the DDT4. El Blazer continued to shine and had some really fun sequences with El Generico. Much like the other tag match, this one saw lots of high flying, this time with El Blazer providing the high spots. Steen and Generico worked over Blazer for the most part of the match, and eventually got the win after Steen hit Blazer with a diving clothesline after Generico launched Blazer in the air. All four men embraced after the match, and the Japanese team received a "Please Come Back" chant from the crowd.
PWG Commissioner Dino Winwood came to the ring and asked that the Human Tornado come out to surrender the PWG World Championship. Tornado came out and said he'd do it only if Candice LeRae were to come to take it from him. Candice came out reluctantly and was careful when she tried to get the title from Tornado. Tornado acted as if he was willing to put their past behind him, but instead backed her into a corner to attack her. This prompted Dino Winwood to attack Tornado. Jay Briscoe ran out and laid out Dino by giving him a kick to the face and a forearm. Necro Butcher then came out, which lead to the next match.
4. Necro Butcher over Jay Briscoe. Human Tornado was still at ringside, and got involved in the match that saw Necro and Jay brawl around the Burbank National Guard Armory. Lots of chairs were used in this match. Tornado tried to cost Necro the match by attacking referee Rick Knox with a crutch, but took the crutch from Tornado and attacked his bad knee with it. He then delivered a Tiger Driver on Jay on top of several chairs and got the pin for the victory. After the match, Necro continued to attack Tornado's bad knee. Once the attack was finished and Necro left, several officials helped carry Tornado to the back.
5. The Dynasty (Joey Ryan and Scott Lost), Hook Bomberry and TJ Perkins over Candice LeRae, Scorpio Sky, and 2.0 (Jagged and Shane Mathews). Following intermission, this match was set to take place, Ronin was going to be part of the match. However, TJ Perkins attacked him before the match and went after his knee with several chairshots. When Ronin was taken out, Candice LeRae came out and volunteered to take his place.
This was a great eight person tag match that was full of great action and many memorable moments. The funniest part of the match came during a sequence where every wrestler would hit various moves, Joey Ryan grabbed Candice LeRae's chest and yelled "Boobplex" and proceeded to give her a German Suplex while grabbing her chest. After the match, 2.0 got a "Please Come Back" chant and LeRae got a standing ovation from the fans.
6. Jack Evans and Roderick Strong over Kevin Steen and El Generico to win the DDT4 and to become the new PWG World Tag Team Champions. Excellent match, and one of the best tag matches of 2008 by far. All four men shined in this match. It was packed with lots of great high flying and crazy looking moves that got the fans into the match. Everyone brought their A-Game for this, and the drama that was built up towards the end of the match was great.
The finish came when Jack and Roderick hit the Ode To The Bulldogs, which involves Roderick standing with an opponent on his back in a reverse fireman's carry, and Jack jumping off the top rope and hitting a moonsault off the opponent on Roderick's shoulders and onto the other opponent.
This time Jack did a Phoenix Splash to gain the victory. Following the match, Kevin Steen teased a heel turn by walking out with the belts and arguing with El Generico. After a few moments, the two teams embraced and received a nice ovation from the fans.
Notes: Night 2 was a much better show than Night 1. The final match of the weekend was tremendous, and the best match from the two shows. The crowd for Night 2 was close to around 400. This show was also supposed to have Brandon Bonham vs. Nemesis, but neither man made an appearance at the event. Even with the match not taking place, this was still a great night of wrestling.
