10/1 Northeast Wrestling: WWE's Daniel Bryan vs. Shelton Benjamin, Mickie James, Carlito, Tommy Dreamer, TNA's Shore, George "The Animal" Steele, Bryan responds to a fan question on whether he'll work a 60-minute WWE match
Oct 2, 2010 - 10:32 AM

Northeast Wrestling
Waterbury, Conn.
Report by Dot Net reader Zack

I was wicked excited for my first indie event. I had second row seats. We left extra early so I would be first in line for autographs, but that didn't work out thanks to traffic and my piece of crap GPS. We ended up waiting forever in line which wouldn't have been so bad if the dude in front of me didn't smell like pure death.

I had a laugh at one of the indie talents who was wearing a shirt that said "stop necktie violence!" Mickie is insanely hot. She was hands down the hottest diva and she could work but creative thought she was too fat...? I asked Bryan when I should expect to see him in a 60 minute WWE match to show them what he can do. He cracked up and said never, but it's always okay to dream. Real nice guy down to earth.

1. ManScout over Cedric Alexander. The show started with some dude in a boy scout uniform, we'll call him ManScout vs Cedric Alexander (guy in necktie shirt from earlier) Alexander looks familiar maybe from Tough Enough? Didn't expect much with the corny gimmick but really solid 10 min match. Alexander over Manscout with a split legged moonsault

2. Eddie Latham fought Joey Bricco to a no-contest. Fans hated both men go-away style. 5 mins in Ron Zombie came out destroyed both men with a chair and everyone chanted "thank you Ron." He cut a face promo on Tommy Dreamer and said they're having a hardcore match later. Go figure.

3. Vin the Chin and Something McBride defeated Chris Battle and CX1. Vin and Battle both look like Kevin Steen. CX1 like an anorexic James Storm. Decent match McBride (tallest man in match at about 6'5") won with an impressive 450 splash halfway across the ring. Do that Gabriel...

4. Carlito defeated Robbie E (w/Cookie). Carlito got a big pop and had a genuine smile. He looked happier than I ever saw him in WWE. Robbie has a good look. Carlito said he's finally somewhere where people appreciate him and that's cool. Carlito made the ref stop the match so he could wipe off the hair gel off himself. Funny. Then he spit the apple at cookie. Robbie botched some of Carlito's signature spots but Carlito won after a backstabber.

5. Ron Zombie defeated Tommy Dreamer in a hardcore match. Apparently these two met in 1990 when Zombie was a fan and Dreamer convinced Zombie to try wrestling school. Dreamer grabbed drinks from fans and spit them all at Zombie. He then gave the empties to a kid in front of me and said "thats 25 cents right there go buy something nice." Zombie won after an STO onto a chair.

Intermission. I went to merch and bought a "stop necktie violence" shirt. ManScout was the one working the stand so I got to talk to him a little. Very friendly guy.

6. Waterbury police officer Mike Tripp and NEW champion Matt Taven defeated Brian Anthony and Bull Dredd. Taven looks like Bret Hart in '95. It was Officer Tripp's pro wrestling debut but he came out in full uniform. Gun, taser, and all. K he finally took it off. A taser shot would be a pretty good finisher though... George "the Animal" Steele came out to be in the officer and champ's corner.

A llarge "use the taser" chant broke out about ten minutes in. Taven hit the scariest moonsault I have ever seen off the top to the outside on Dred, who clearly had no idea it was coming because he took it right on head without catching Taven at all. Everyone ran to see if both men were still alive. The cop pinned the other guy somehow right after that deathsault. I didn't see because I was 90 percent sure at the time that I had witnessed a man die.

7. Micke James defeated Kaitlin Yim. First off, Kong sucks for backing out at the last minute. At least if she had stuck with backing out last week, they'd have had time to find a decent replacement. Classic Mickie thong slip. Nice. Mickie won with her DDT.

8. Daniel Bryan defeated Shelton Benjamin. Dragon came out to his generic rock. Disappointing. Shelton got rid of his silly yellow hair. Good match, but it never got into a solid second gear. Dragon won with a victory roll.

Thoughts: Much more crowd involvement than WWE house shows, so it was fun in a different way. No match was really great but they were all solid, fun 10-15 minute matches. I sat behind some hardcore ROH style fans, so that was very entertaining, but they hated Daniel Bryan? I wasn't familiar with any of their home talent but they didn't disappoint. Loaded card with Robbie E, Carlito, Shelton Benjamin, Mickie James, Tommy Dreamer, George Steele, and Daniel Bryan, so it was totally worth the $10-$20 tickets.

Is WWE Raw expanding to three hours per week a good move for business?
Yes. It's an extra hour of exposure and presumably a better programming fee.
No. This is overexposure. See WCW Nitro.
