Kester's TNA Impact Wrestling Rundown: Aces and Eights continues to make their presence felt, the Bound For Glory Series wraps up, and another Gut Check judging happens
Aug 31, 2012 - 12:00 PM

Aces and Eights

I'm glad that Bane Jr. got a VP badge. It was a bit odd to see the entire group be a set of prospects.

TNA handled Aces and Eights better last night than they had the preceding week. They didn't overexpose the group nor did they make it look like an army that could descend on TNA at will with nothing but their foot soldiers.

I'm still not sold on the babyfaces and heels of TNA joining together to take on the new group, though. That is one of the key elements that make this feel like a NOW rehash rather than its own thing.

Bound For Glory Series

TNA did a much better job of telling stories with the Bound For Glory Series than they had the previous week with Anderson's idiotic settle for a pin that didn't get him into the top 4 contention. Styles constantly going for submissions in his match and Hardy and Angle battling for the final spot with their match made for good television and helped get over the series as a whole.

I like the group of guys we have for the final five. I would rather have seen Magnus get a push this year than the hit or miss RVD, but we got a group of guys that can go in the finals. TNA did a much better job with the series this year than its inception, and I look forward to the improvements they bring into the series going forward.

Gut Check

I get the distinct feeling that this month's participant was denied his contract simply because TNA wants to shed the idea that a sob story is what earns someone a contract. I'm all for that idea, but I also wish TNA managed to present a guy by now that managed to get more than a two minute match full of mediocre spots that resulted in a losing effort. It's ridiculous that none of the recruits thus far have been able to hold their own in the ring.

At this point, TNA will have to do a lot of work to make the Gut Check idea not a joke and I'm not sure if the returns are worth the investment it will take to undo the damage they've done with the shoddy execution thus far.

Overall Show

Last night's show was decent. Nothing extraordinary, yet nothing terrible outside of the usual Gut Check shenanigans. TNA did a good job of furthering the Aces and Eights group without giving too much away all at once.
