Bobby Roode and James Storm
From the video segments to the backstage briefs to the lengthy show-closing promo segment, TNA was spot on with their hype for the main event of Lockdown. Storm and Roode delivered a strong final hard sell that was marred only by Roode's reliance on bringing up family members. With the tone that promo was taking, adding in extra names and figures served more as a distraction than it did a helping hand.
While I enjoyed the finals ell, I think TNA did long-term damage by waiting until the last minute to hype this match. No matter how good the go-home sell is, TNA still spent three weeks making these two men play back fiddle to authority figure drama, which proves how much emphasis and focus TNA places on what should be their top-tier talent.
Lethal Lockdown
Speaking of Hogan and company, I cannot pretend to care about this Lethal lockdown match. It feels and looks like a catch-all that is serving to primarily hype the Bischoff drama that I have been balking at for some time. I will say that I am glad that this should lead to the end of the Bischoff vs. Bischoff feud; I simply wish it hadn't absorbed some of the more interesting upper card storylines in the process.
Samoa Joe & Magnus and The Motor City Machine Guns
This was another phenomenal promo exchange between champions and challengers. The Machine Guns played their parts well, Magnus served as a great mouthpiece for his team, and Joe said everything he would need to with his body language. Of the matches on the card, this is one of the ones I am looking forward to the most.
Mexican America's presence toward the end was mildly distracting but they managed to give the fans some physicality without the two babyface teams having to lock horns before the PPV. It will be interesting to see where TNA goes with the tag team division once these two teams finish feuding as the three-team division just clearly showed which team is considered to be the worst.
Eric Young and ODB get hitched
As someone who normally enjoys the wrestling weddings, for whatever reason, I had some fun with this. It got a bit old after the same joke was played out several times over the course of several minutes, but it was at least entertaining.
Here's the issue, however. How many PPV buys did this segment sell? TNA is going into one of what they consider to be their big four PPVs, and they devoted a large chunk of their broadcast time to a skit that had nothing to do with said PPV.
Overall Show
Last night's show was a bit of a mixed bag. There were definitely some solid promo segments and some good wrestling action available so the fundamentals were solid. However, a lot of TNA's current storylines hold little to none of my interest, and the worst of those, the Bischoff vs. Bischoff feud, was the centerpiece of this show. What it all boils down to is an otherwise solid show that simply failed to really get me excited about the overall TNA product.
