Ryan's Reaction: TNA's Bound for Glory Series, Zack Ryder's new role, the Divas division gets a push, and more from the previous week in professional wrestling
Aug 6, 2011 - 06:45 PM

By Ryan Kester

What Went Right

- TNA gave the Bound for Glory Series the strongest push it has had since its creation. There were three matches on the show, they showed footage of matches that impacted the series at live events, and Matt Morgan joined the commentary team to give a wrestler's viewpoint on the BFGS. This is exactly what TNA needs to keep doing so that the payoff at Bound for Glory will be white hot.

- Last week, I called for some level of physicality to further the Daniel Bryan/Wade Barrett feud. What WWE gave us was Wade Barrett sitting in on commentary while Daniel Bryan had a match with Tyson Kidd. However, Barrett proved how well he can get a feud over on the mic as by the end of the match, the feud felt personal. Both men need this feud to get over, and Barrett's words on commentary managed to elevate them both.

- I said last week that Christian needed something to make it look like he wouldn't just get destroyed and drop the belt at SummerSlam, and his clean pin over Orton on Smackdown did just that. Christian's antics after the match really put that win over the top, and all WWE has to do is prevent Orton from avenging the loss on the go-home edition of Smackdown.

- Sheamus had his first week as a babyface from start to finish, and the crowd couldn't have been more behind him. He's really clicking with the fans and is the perfect foil to Henry's recent push as a monster heel.

- Both on Smackdown and on Raw, the best in-ring performers in the Divas division got a significant push. This is the first time WWE has paid any attention to the division since Kharma announced her pregnancy earlier in the year.

What Went Wrong

- Sting continued his trend of talking about Dixie Carter and Immortal when he should be talking about his opponent. He managed to mention Kurt Angle at the tail end of his promo in the closing moments of Impact, but it's far too little too late when that happens at the end of the go-home show before the PPV.

- In an act of character-altering nonsense, John Cena considers himself a legitimate WWE champion. Cena did what he should have in the previous week's Raw when he wilted when Punk raised the real title, but this week he did a complete 180. For someone who is all about honor, Cena should be begging to get a shot at Punk, not begging his boss not to strip him of the belt.

- Michael Cole dominated the announce booth on Raw. If they are going to try and put over Triple H as the COO, then the man he put in the announce booth should be the one leading the commentary.

- Zack Ryder has made it on to television, but he's been treated as Smackdown's resident punch line so far. There is a reason why he is over with online fans, and it's a shame he isn't being allowed to display the characteristics that can get him over on television.

- In the opening segment of raw, Punk and Triple H spent over twenty minutes going back and forth with one another and trading jabs. Punk and Cena, however, spent their time together whining about who should be considered the real champion and then having a round of "anything you can do, I can do better" with their playing to the crowd. Much like Sting and Immortal, I have a problem when the angle between a wrestler and an authority figure gets a stronger push than the angle between a wrestler and his opponent.

What Needs to Happen Next Week

- C.M. Punk needs to spend some mic time tearing apart Cena's claim to the WWE Championship and the means by which he obtained his title. There's not enough time before SummerSlam for them to make this feud click with anything less.

- Ryder needs to be given time to get over as a babyface. While I would have preferred he return to television as a heel, I realize that some of the greatest heel runs in wrestling history came on the end of a strong babyface push. I think the best thing WWE can do for Ryder is allowing him to be the goofy babyface before he becomes a serious douche heel. The only way that will ever work, however, is if they start taking him seriously, and each week they wait the more he will be set in the role of comedic relief.

- Triple H needs to settle into his role as an authority figure and take up less TV time. I realize the need to establish him as the authority figure for a bit after Vince went off the air, but they have put far too much focus on him thus far.

- Beth Phoenix needs to be given some time and some leeway to talk about how she's tired of seeing talentless eye candy get more opportunities and focus from WWE management. The beat down from last week was solid, but fans will need a lot more than that to be convinced to pay attention to the Divas.

- John Laurinaitis needs to retire from his on-air personality. I don't care that he's only be on the show for a week, he's terrible, and WWE needs to pull that plug before forcing another audience from suffering through another Laurinaitis promo.
