TNA "Impact Wrestling" Rundown: Gunner pins the TNA Champion, Jeff Jarrett is exiled to Mexico, and the Bound for Glory Series kicks off in a big way
Jun 17, 2011 - 11:32 AM

The purpose of this editorial is to rundown the latest edition of professional wrestling programming by highlighting the various segments and storylines of the show, quickly recounting what happened, how I feel about what happened, and what I want to see out of a storyline or feud going forward. The following Rundown covers the June 16 edition of Impact Wrestling.

By Ryan Kester

Devon and the Pope:

Devon came out and had a match with Hernandez that quickly ended in a DQ when the rest of Hernandez's faction hit the ring and attacked Devon. In the meantime, Pope had come down to ringside to talk to Devon's boys and flirt with his wife. Pope made the save for Devon and as he was walking out, Devon's wife stripped him down with her eyes and touched his shoulder.

I simply don't care about this feud, and I am sick of seeing Devon's kids and family in TNA. With all the hell they get put through, you'd think he'd keep them at his bloody house rather than right next to the guard rail for someone to mess with them.

I don't care where they go with this feud as they couldn't even bother to put it on Impact until last night. I'm more than certain it's going to take Kurt Angle and Jeff Jarrett's place for uncomfortable family angle, and those are just not something I find to be entertaining. Still, we are very much in the early going of this feud, so I'll just be skeptical of the situation until they actually do something trashy, at which point I will rain bloody hell down upon the angle.

Kurt Angle and Jeff Jarrett:

Kurt Angle came out and cut a quick promo putting over himself as the new number-on contender for the TNA title. He then quickly talked about what was really important to him, going for another Olympic gold medal in what appears to be a midlife crisis. Jeff came out and demanded one more match, a loser leaves TNA parking lot brawl. He ended up losing the match, and is now forced to move to Mexico.

When Jarrett asked for a match last night I just groaned. I understand the need to get him off of TV for a while, but couldn't you have just ran an injury angle from the finale to this feud? Why did you need o take away from the main event of your last PPV to have some craptastic parking lot brawl? To make matters worse, it went on at the end of the show as well, and completely overshadowed what should have been a huge moment in a young wrestler's career.

Considering Angle is about to walk out the door, I expect him to put over Anderson when they finally lock up. Oh, where was the build for that match? The two guys barely even mentioned each other throughout the night.

Austin Aries returns:

Austin Aries won a great three-way dance between himself, Kid Kash, and Jimmy Rave to earn a shot at a contract at Destination X.

I was enthralled with the match last night, but watching it back made me reconsider. While Aries was a godsend, there wasn't a great flow to the match, and it at times felt more like a spotfest than a proper match. I won't dwell on that too much, though, as Aries shined like a diamond, and his series with a kneebreaker turned rock bottom turned reverse spinning elbow drop was extremely impressive.

This was the only build we had tonight for destination X. I find it sad that they had to point out how they needed to bring back old X-Division guys to bolster the currently demolished division.

Jackie returns and join ODB:

Velvet Sky and Miss Tessmacher teamed up to go after the Knockouts tag titles that haven't been on TNA in months. ODB eventually came out and distracted Velvet which led to Tessmacher getting pinned. Then, Jackie appeared and attacked velvet along with ODB until security came out. Security took turns, like idiots, getting their crotches punted by ODB while trying to create a wall of slumped security between the two bigger women and Velvet.

So now we have two women to call Velvet a trashy whore. Oh joy!

I'm looking forward to this feud's conclusion. Not because it will be epic, but because I am tired of trashy women on my wrestling program. I am all for sex appeal, and Velvet has it in buckets, but classless segments that make my fiancée leave the room in disgust only make for terrible TV.

Eric Young shenanigans:

Eric Young went looking for a challenger for his TV title and ended up attacking and pinning Jason Hervey in a mock match to retain his title.

First of all, thanks to Dot Net reader Brady Hirschhorn for telling me who that producer was. Yes, I'm sure it was obvious to most of you but I am still new enough to TNA not to recognize Bischoff's right hand man by sight. Eric Young is an absolute twat, and he did all he could to make the little toy red belt into a joke rather than a credible title. Under no circumstances should a belt a company treats as legitimate be treated as a prop for comedy antics.

I grow to despise Young more and more each and every week. His comedy is worse than Santino's, and I already want to pull my hair out every time I see the Cobra. Still, at least the title they are defacing and demeaning is one that can be referred to as a toy and not their highest title. Oh, wait, no, he's got their old world title around his waist as well. Awesome.

Bound for Glory Series begins:

The BFG series kicked off tonight in great fashion with a nearly ten minute match between RVD and Samoa Joe. However, the system for determining who wins the BFG series is needlessly complicated and conflicted with the video package they aired early in the show that talked about how the series would be based off of wins and losses.

Yeah, I am not a fan of the scoring system, but I like the overall intention of the concept. The match RVD and Joe had was great and made Joe look like an absolute beast.

Despite my reservations about the scoring, I am very much looking forward to the rest of the series and seeing what type of match-ups we get from this thing.

Gunner pins Anderson:

In the main event of the evening, Gunner faced Mr. Anderson to pin two different TNA champions in as many weeks. Earlier in the night, Gunner had confronted Anderson and demanded a shot at his title. Instead, he got a non-title match that he would go on to win.

This can be taken one of two ways. Either Gunner is still a jobber and the past couple of TNA champions suck, or they are pushing this guy to the bloody moon. It was refreshing to see Gunner work on the stick and not sound like a twat, but I get the sickening feeling that they are trying to make Gunner and Bischoff into the next Lesnar and Heyman, which would be a colossal mistake and a horrendous idea. Still, if they pull back slightly and just give him a steady, believable push, then I am all for this.

I want to see them slow down a bit and not try and shove this kid into the main event before he's ready and burn out his potential by shoving him down the throats of the crowd.

Overall Show:

Overall, this show was quite good. It had a few moments that made me groan and get pissy, but I have come to expect that from TNA. However, at the end of the coverage, the show absolutely felt like it flew by when I normally stare at my clock waiting for the horror to end. I am quite excited about the BFG series and I look forward to seeing what it produces. The scoring system isn't for me, but it's a minor complaint in the face of having a meaningful program on the show that actually focusing on the in-ring product.
