Mark Out Moments - WWE Raw edition: The Rock and John Cena, Triple opens the show, The Miz challenges Steve Austin, first show after WrestleMania 27
Apr 5, 2011 - 12:20 PM

By Mark Gessner

This is the second of the three editions of Mark Out Moments that will run today on each of the shows that aired during WWE Night on USA Network. Check the previous edition for my thoughts on the WWE Hall of Fame ceremony, and check back later today for the WWE Tough Enough edition.

- Hearing the voice of Jim Ross welcoming viewers to Raw was a much welcomed surprise. As I said in my preview and predictions for Wrestlemania that if JR took over as the play-by-play announcer on Raw, that we were all the winners. Hopefully this isn't just a one night appearance by the best in the business.

- Great promo by Hunter to open Raw. Could we possibly see a full years build towards Taker vs. Hunter II?

- Michael Cole, sporting a bruise under his left eye asked King if he wanted a rematch and King agreed. The way he worded it you could tell Cole was not talking about a rematch from Wrestlemania. My first thought was Miz to get him a clean win after retaining with help from The Rock in the main event last night, but Cole meant Jack Swagger.

- Following interference by Cole, Jack Swagger locked in Ken Shamrock's ankle lock as a tribute to "The World's Most Dangerous Man" to get the tapout victory. Swagger did not release the hold and the referee reversed the decision.

- Cole then squirted JR with JR's BBQ Sauce and JR chased him to the back. My initial reaction was "that better not be the last of JR on commentary." Sure enough, Raw comes back from commercial break with Cole announcing from the Cole Mine and Josh Matthews and Booker T at the announcers table.

- Wasn't Orton wrestling Mysterio two weeks ago when Punk attacked Orton with the wrench? Why are they now teaming with no explanation? The last time I remember Orton and Mysterio being involved in an angle, it was at Wrestlemania 22 where Orton told Mysterio his deceased friend was in hell. Just because wrestlers are both faces or both heels, I don't like how they automatically tag team together in matches and have no pre-existing signs of prior conflicts.

- High-angle suplex -> European uppercut -> 619 -> RKO finishing sequence to get the win for Orton and Mysterio. Really good back and forth tag team match that went three segments with two commercial breaks.

- "I don't know if it's ever gonna happen again. But if it does, I'll be there. Hell of a match."- Stone Cold backstage to Triple H. Nice move by WWE to put the excellent match over even more.

- Stone Cold introduced the new class for Tough Enough. Surprisingly one of the contestants names is Eric Watts. You'd think they'd have him changed his named based on Erik Watts. Miss USA was by far the most over.

- Miz and Alex Riley interrupting the introductions made sense with him being the runner up on the last Tough Enough. Good synergy and way to use the Miz. Wonder what Daniel Puder's up to right now?

- Miz challenged Austin to one more match. Austin told the the Tough Enough cast to clear the ring. Miz bailed after landing one shot and Riley took it from there. Austin allowed Riley to get in a lot more offense than you'd think be for hitting his signature spots with mudhole stomping, a thesz press (courtesy of Dutch Mantell who DotNet Members can listen to an interview with in the audio archive), and then a stunner.

- Why is Steve Austin drinking Keystone Light? Is he a broke college student? And even if he didn't have millions, go Natty de-Light if you're going to drink shitty cheap beer.

- Booker is abysmal as an announcer. How is saying that Del Rio looked like a deer in the headlights at Wrestlemania going to get him over. He had a good Mania debut. If you're going to pick a returning wrestler from this years Royal Rumble, maybe go with someone who is a natural talker with jet black hair, seven feet tall, and had a great moment at the Hall of Fame. I hear he has friends in high places.

- Speaking of said friend in high places, another DX video comes out tomorrow on DVD.

- "I don't think he got all of it"- Booker T in reference to Morrison hitting Ziggler with Starship Pain. Very rarely does he ever, why the hell would you point that out?

- Sheamus is now wearing red, white, and blue tights due to being the United States Champion. Wonder if someone on twitter whose promoting their food company and the most helpful hacker in the world will take credit for this as well?

- Short but good US Championship TV match between Sheamus and Bryan based on the couple on minutes they were given. When you start a match at 10:49 EST and still have an advertised debut of a wrestler and The Rock and Cena confrontation in the main event slot, you don't expect a classic match.

- Impressive debut by Sin Cara following the match. Good springboard hurricanrana and an awesome flying crossbody out of the ring that he got huge air and hang time on.

- Cena is now wearing Philadelphia Phillies colors. Florida Gators orange and blue after they won the BCS Championship, LA Lakers purple and gold after they won the NBA, and now Phillies red, white, and blue on their warm up and alternate jerseys on the year they're going to win the World Series. Get off the bandwagon jackass.

- Good job by Cena putting over Miz for walking in and out of Wrestlemania as champion and saying that he earned Cena's respect.

- "Only in the WWE, could you see Muhammad Ali vs. Mike Tyson. Only in the WWE, could you see Michael Jordon vs. Lebron. The match that the fans want is John Cena vs. The Rock."- John Cena. Kobe instead of Lebron but solid point and line.

- At Wrestlemania 28, in the main event from Miami, FL, on April 1, 2012, The Rock vs. John Cena.

- The Corre is officially buried. If losing at Mania vs. Kane, Big Show, Santino, and Kofi in less than two minutes wasn't bad enough, Rock and Cena thwarted off an ambush with ease.
