Barnett's WWE Money in the Bank Preview and Predictions: Who will win the Briefcases? Can Christian finally beat Randy Orton? Will CM Punk leave the WWE with the WWE Title?
Jul 17, 2011 - 06:40 PM |
By Jake Barnett
I have no idea whether anything I say here will come true. These are my best guesses based on the fact that past performance being the best predictor of future results.
Kelly Kelly vs. Brie Bella for the WWE Diva's Championship: The women deserve an actual story heading into this match other than this is a rematch and the Bella's have been bitchy heels towards Kelly since her move to Raw. I would guess we get some kind of Twin Magic attempt at a finish, but somehow it backfires and Kelly retains.
Kelly Kelly retains the Women's Championship
Big Show vs. Mark Henry: This match does not conjure images in my head that resemble an awe inspiring, well timed athletic contest, but surprisingly I'm actually looking forward to this match. Mark Henry has been about as good as we've ever seen him, and possibly better, as an intimidating heel. Big Show, luckily, has been able to pretty much dissolve the memory of his comical car wreck storyline with Alberto Del Rio and deliver decent intensity with this feud. I suspect shenanigans in this match to keep the feud alive for Summerslam.
Mark Henry and Big Show ends with a DQ or count-out finish.
Sheamus vs. Kane vs. Sin Cara vs. Daniel Bryan vs. Wade Barrett vs. Cody Rhodes vs. Heath Slater vs. Justin Gabriel in the Smackdown Money in the Bank Ladder Match: This match seemes to be a lot more mysterious than the Raw match for me. There are more big men in this match, so I expect a much different pace than the Raw match, but I think overall this match has a lot more potential to create a new star. WWE is in dire need of a new babyface star on the Smackdown brand, so in my heart of hearts they go with Daniel Bryan or Justin Gabriel and make the briefcase the storyline that carries either of them in to the Main Event. But, the other more realistic side of my brain says Sheamus wins this match and holds it over the heads of the other Smackdown main event scene.
Sheamus captures the briefcase and wins the match.
Alberto Del Rio vs. Jack Swagger vs. The Miz vs. Rey Mysterio vs. Evan Bourne. vs. Kofi Kingston in the Raw Brand Money in the Bank Ladder Match: The Raw version of this match has a lot more star power than the Smackdown side, and I expect one of these matches to steal the show. Alberto Del Rio seems to be the odds on favorite to win here, due to his rumored upcoming feud with John Cena and the need for a new top heel on Raw with CM Punk's hiatus of undetermined duration. That is just a rumor, and not set in stone, but I think it makes sense given that the WWE machine seems to be behind Del Rio, and his storyline “destiny” to reach greatness.
Alberto Del Rio wins and potentially cashes in during the Main Event
Randy Orton vs. Christian for the World Heavyweight Championship: This feud has kind of sputtered for me lately. Christian has done as well as he could with the material he has been given, but it says a lot about his credibility as a heel that the final push for this feud was Christian trying to convince the crowd that Randy was going to DQ himself on Sunday. Orton has dominated the physicality in this feud, and Christian has only been made to look strong in fleeting moments. The only way they can get any more mileage out of this feud is a title win for Christian tonight, and I can only imagine it coming in some overbooked fashion.
Christian wins the World Heavyweight Championship is some overbooked fashion.
John Cena vs CM Punk for the WWE Championship: This match has a lot of potential to be a momentum shift for the WWE in a lot of ways. John Cena's character is stale and he needs a change, and this feud with CM Punk and Vince McMahon has an opportunity to do that. CM Punk appears to legitimately be leaving WWE for a brief time, and only he knows for how long. The promos leading up to this feud have been ground breaking in a lot of ways.
They have exposed a lot of the criticisms towards WWE that have been levelled by former talent and members of the creative staff, and have painted both the McMahon family and their direct subordinates in a less than flattering light. We have also seen a division between Vince and John Cena, who in the past have been on very good terms both backstage and in storyline terms.
I don't think we see CM Punk leave with the title, but I think there is a distinct possibility he wins the match, and we see Vince take steps to keep him from leaving the building with it. The real question is where do we see the WWE go with John Cena, who could leave this match a much different character than he started it with. In the long term, I think a John Cena character change could be nothing but good things for the WWE.
CM Punk wins the match and the title after McMahon attempts to interfere and it backfires, and Alberto Del Rio wins it from him after cashing in his briefcase with the backing of Vince McMahon
