7/17 Hermanstyne's WWE Smackdown Coverage: C.M. Punk vs. John Morrison, six-person tag team action, Edge discusses his injury, Jeff Hardy and Rey Mysterio vs. Chris Jericho and Dolph Ziggler in the main event
Jul 17, 2009 - 09:23 PM

WWE Smackdown on MyNetworkTV
Taped in Miami, Fla.

[Q1] The opening montage aired and JR hyped the tag team main event for tonight. Also, the hyped the Edge interview for later on tonight. Jeff Hardy comes out to a huge, two minute ovation. Jeff said that Punk made a shocking revelation and video was shown from last week when Punk was ripping Hardy for his past. He said he keeps ripping him like he is in hiding. He said everyone makes mistakes and he admits to them. He said he hasn’t failed a test in over a year and never been to rehab because he has healed himself. He said he would beat Punk and Punk’s music interrupted Jeff.

Punk says that he is sorry that the people are actually are cheering because he hasn’t failed a drug test in a year. He said it’s not an accomplishment and they should be ready to write his Hall of Fame speech. Jeff said he is tired of hearing the same thing. Punk said that Jeff was a screw up and asked him how many classes he failed and how many classes he cut. Jeff asked if he was his guidance counselor. Punk said that Jeff was a joke and mentioned that he bragged about not going to rehab.

Jeff said he would be the next world champ and Punk said he was a dreamer. Punk said that Jeff can’t beat him and he has never drink, smoke and will never do it in the future. He said that he will still be champion this time next year. Punk said that he will lose to him and fall back. Jeff said he may not be as perfect as him. Punk said the same thing in every arena, kids are wearing his shirts. Punk said he will be the bigger man because he has a match next. He said that won’t stop him from tearing him apart at the Night of Champions. [C]

Mind of Marv: Good opening segment which leads to questions. Jeff has had drug issues in the past but why is he still over with fans, particularly kids? Will this be a classic match at the NOC? Because if Jeff is not going to renew his contract, can we automatically say that he is jobbing to Punk? Punk's heel stock has risen, but he is not getting the heat that he needs so far…

[Q2] The Slam of the Week was shown with John Morrison defeating Punk a few weeks ago.

1. John Morrison pinned World Heavyweight Champion C.M. Punk in a non-title match in 12:00. Both competitors worked on each other’s arms and shoved each other. Punk applied a hold and hit a flying crossbody which was countered by Morrison for a nearfall. Punk went for the GTS but Morrison countered with a clothesline outside the ring. Punk pulled Morrison outside of the ring. [C]

The show returns with Punk having Morrison in a body scissors. Morrison got out of the hold with elbows to Punk’s head. Punk hit a belly-to-belly suplex for a nearfall. Punk put the body scissors back on Morrison. Morrison came back with some punches and clotheslines to Punk. Morrison knocked Punk down with a knee strike for a nearfall. Morrison hit a hurracrana but Punk countered into a roll up for a nearfall. Punk hit a tilt-o-whirl backbreaker for a nearfall. Punk applied a sleeper to Morrison in the middle of the ring.

Morrison pushed Punk and applied a sleeper but Punk got out and both of them clotheslined each other. Punk went for the kick in the corner but Morrison countered with the Chuck Kick for a nearfall. Morrison went for Starship Pain but Punk countered into a roll up for a nearfall. Morrison scored the win with an Oklahoma roll. Morrison wanted to shake hands out of sportsmanship, but Punk walked out.

Mind of Marv: Readers, you are looking at a preview of the SummerSlam world title match. Morrison has two non-title wins and SummerSlam happens to be in LA…can we assume that JoMo wins the world title in SoCal? It could happen…

[Q3] The show returned with a view of I-95 and the announcers hyped the main event and the Edge interview. Layla comes out to dance for the hometown crowd. She says she’s happy to be back and she will heat things up in the MIA. Layla started to shake that ass…

Mind of Marv: Well that was 45 seconds of Diva excitement for a change on Smackdown.

Ricky Ortiz came out with his rally towel to spoil the dancing for Layla. Ortiz asked the crowd if they really wanna see her dance. He says they need motivation and inspiration. He starts to rip the Miami Heat and he says that he will rally up the Miami crowd. He gave Layla a rally towel and she dropped it. Ortiz looks like an idiot in the middle of the ring.

Mind of Marv: Why does Ortiz still have a job? Layla was all pretty and thick and Ortiz just bombs the segment.

Meanwhile, the Cryme Tyme Word Up segment was shown. The word of the day was “Championized”. Eve was stretching her legs. Shad says he hangs with champions like Antrel Rolle of the Arizona Cardinals. Rolle said what up to CT and started to flirt with Eve. Jesse came to interrupt with a Larry Fitzgerald jersey. Jesse said that he wanted to go with Rolle to kick it at some clubs but he said he was with CT and Eve. Jesse said how Rolle is gonna roll up to his “boo” and Eve rejected him. Shad threw Jesse into the laundry chute . [C]

Mind of Marv: Jesse stole my Larry Fitzgerald jersey.

Video was shown of the Kane and Khali confrontation from last week. Truth came out to his weak ass rap as usual…

[Q4]2. Kane defeated R-Truth in 11:00.Truth started with some punches but Kane shoves him to the ground. Kane hit an uppercut to Truth. Kane worked on Truth in the corner with punches and another uppercut. Truth tried some offense but Kane threw him out of the ring. Kane went for a big boot but Truth countered with a kick to Kane outside of the ring…[C]

The show returned with Kane hitting a side slam to Truth. Truth did his cheerleading moves to kick Kane. Kane came back with a sidewalk slam for a nearfall. Kane started to kick the hell out of Truth and Irish whipped him for a nearfall. Kane placed Truth in a body scissors to a bear hug. Kane slanged Truth outside of the ring and Truth countered by pushing Kane into the ring post.

[Q5] Kane banged Truth in the ring post and punched him in the head. Kane placed Truth into a bear hug. Truth tried a rollup but he failed and hit a dropkick. Kane shoved Truth and Truth countered with a drop toe hold. Truth DDT’ed Kane for a nearfall. Truth tried to come from the top rope but Kane countered with a big boot for the pinfall.

Khali and Ranjin Singh came out. Khali came out looking pissed. Truth came out of nowhere and missile drop kicked Kane. Khali tried to chase Kane but Kane ran through the crowd. The main event and the Edge interview was hyped again…[C]

Mind of Marv: Overall, I feel that Khali is an irrelevant opponent to work with and hopefully they don’t have a match at SummerSlam or it would be strongly advised to take a bathroom break, get something to drink, etc. This does nothing for Truth and he should consider going back to TNA.

The announcers hyped the ZZ Top guest host appearance for Monday. Meanwhile, Truth did his Pretty Ricky (aka Delicious) act again. He went around South Beach to look for women and people to bother. A woman said you can give her a $1,000 and she still wouldn’t kiss him. The Hart Dynasty comes out for their match…[C]

Mind of Marv: The movie, Blue Streak starring Martin Lawrence, was created ten years ago and that’s where they get this idea from? If you wanna roll your eyes, you are free to do so for this bad segment.

The show returned with Grisham talking about all the beautiful women in Miami…

Mind of Marv: If Todd wants to stay engaged, he should keep his mouth shut.

[Q6] 3. The Hart Dynasty defeated Eve Torres and Cryme Tyme in a six person mixed tag match in 4:10. Natalya and Eve started the matchup. Kidd and Shad tagged in quickly and Shad got the early advantage. JTG got in and body splashed Kidd for a nearfall. DH Smith got tagged in and stomped on JTG. DH and Kidd hit a double gutbuster for a nearfall. Kidd applied a submission hold to JTG. JTG countered out of the hold and DH knocked Shad out of the ring. JTG tagged Eve in. Eve got some dropkicks to Natalya and round housed kick her. Natalya hit a hotshot and a nasty spinning clothesline to Eve for the win.

Mind of Marv: Basic filler match which basically evens the score in this feud. I want to see more Natalya in the ring because she is so underutilized and a feud with Melina would revamp the Diva’s division.

Backstage Dolph Ziggler was doing pushups. Maria came up and kissed Dolph’s python arm and she laughed. The main event was hyped again the Edge interview is next…[C]

Mind of Marv: Maria laughs like Megan off those reality shows: Rock of Love 2, I Love Money 2 and how own show, Megan Wants a Millionaire. For the record, I’m not hyping reality shows for VH1.

Edge via satellite with his leg wrapped and Edge said he would be lying if he had accomplished everything in this business. He said he has some setbacks and he wants to come back to compete. He said that the injury could be the end of his career. He mentioned that his injury is the hardest injury to come back from and he will do everything he can to come back. Grisham wished him a speedy recovery. Grisham asked him his thoughts about Jericho and Jericho interrupted Edge.

[Q7] Jericho had a microphone and said that Edge makes him sick. Jericho calls him pathetic and hypocritical. He rips Edge and said he doesn’t care about him, the WWE, and the people. He said he will find a partner that is better than him. He said he bragged about his accomplishments and went on to say that he won his by skill. He says Edge’s best accomplishments were injuries which he described. Jericho called him injury prone and weak. He said he is strong and to powerful and he called Edge weak and frail.

Jericho said that Edge was the weak link in the team and he is the true face of Smackdown and the WWE. Edge said that he is not an angel but he said Jericho should not rip him for his accomplishments. Edge says when he comes back, he will prove Jericho wrong. [C]

Mind of Marv: Excellent segment which can be a potential money WM26 match. Jericho and Edge would be worth going to Arizona to watch next year if it happens. The crowd is definitely behind Edge as a future babyface and Jericho proclaimed his top undisputed heel status in the WWE, hands down.

Dolph Ziggler vs. Rey Mysterio was announced for Night of Champions and everyone else came out for their entrances. CM Punk came out for commentary…

[Q8] 4. Jeff Hardy and Intercontinental Champion Rey Mysterio defeated Unified Tag Champion Chris Jericho and Dolph Ziggler by disqualification in 12:40. Jericho and Jeff started the match. Jeff dropkicked and worked on Jericho in the corner. Jericho hit a springboard dropkick to Jeff. [C]

The show returned with Ziggler controlling the match with numerous nearfalls to Jeff. Ziggler applied a headlock and tagged Jericho in the match. Jeff and Jericho exchanged punches and Jericho controlled by clotheslining Jeff for a nearfall. Jeff tagged Rey in the match and Rey hit a flying springboard to Jericho. Rey continued his high flying offense for a nearfall. Rey hit the 619 on Jericho, but Ziggler got a blind tag in and threw Rey outside of the ring.

Ziggler applied a handstand headlock to Rey and Rey countered with elbows. Ziggler hit an Irish whip to Mysterio for a nearfall. Rey hit a takedown to Ziggler into the ring post. Jeff and Jericho got back in the match and Jeff hit some quick moves for a nearfall. Jericho missed the bulldog and Jeff hit the Whisper in the Wind for a nearfall. Jericho applied the Walls of Jericho on Jericho but Jeff countered with a Twist of Fate. Jeff hit the Swanton but Ziggler broke the three count. Jeff tried to throw Jericho in Punk but Punk threw Jericho into Jeff for the DQ. Rey tried to confront Punk but Ziggler came out and hit his finisher to Rey outside of the ring.

Jericho hit a Codebreaker to Jeff inside the ring and he put the Walls of Jericho to Jeff. Punk stared a Jeff in misery and disgust. Punk left the ring and Jericho broke the hold. The crowd gave Punk and Jericho a ton of heat. Jeff was laid out to end the show

Mind of Marv: Excellent main event. Ziggler looks more marketable by the week and I will go ahead and predict that he wins the IC title at NOC. As far as Punk and Hardy, it should be the main event at NOC but it will be overshadowed by the WWE title match which should create some snores because we have seen it 3000 times within the last year. But overall, NOC is looking like a good card on the Smackdown side. No flaws in this show because it featured long matches and a limited amount of filler junk. Another “A” effort from the real “A” show.
