WWE Smackdown House Show
Oshkosh, Wisc. at the Kolf Center on the UW Oshkosh campus
Report by Dot Net Reader JJ R.
The show opened with the Smackdown ring announcer and then Armando Estrada insulted the crowd a bit before running down some of the wrestlers that were in attendance.
1. Chavo Guerrero defeated CM Punk to retain the ECW Heavyweight Championship. Decent match as both wrestlers played their roles pretty well. A couple of believable nearfalls and then Chavo used the ropes and Punk’s tights for the roll up win. The crowd was firmly behind Punk throughout match.
2. Finlay defeated Chuck Palumbo. This match was not good, actually. Lots of stalling by Palumbo, and then a Shillelagh shot to head while the ref wasn’t looking ended the match. No Horswaggle appearance yet.
3. Jesse & Festus defeated Zach Ryder & Curt Hawkins. This was my favorite match of the night. Seeing the Festus character live was quite amusing. Jesse brought a kid into the ring post-match and let him pat Festus' head. Good moment for the kid.
4. Matt Hardy defeated Kevin Thorn (w/Matt Striker). This was a pleasant surprise to see Hardy back. I wonder is this was his first match back from the injury. Good match and Thorn did a good job of mocking Hardy throughout. Post-match "twist of fates" for Thorn and Striker. I don't always catch ECW on Tuesday nights, but since when is Striker managing Thorn?? Could be an interesting combo, though.
5. Kane defeated Big Show (via DQ). About what you would expect with these two in the ring. Nothing fancy. Big Show got DQ’d for striking Kane with a chairshot. Kane returned the favor after the match with a big chairshot on Show.
6. MVP defeated Jamie Noble in a Money in the Bank Qualifying match. Would anyone really believe Noble would win this match? Just as much as anyone would believe that titles would change hands at a house show I guess.
7. Tommy Dreamer defeated Shelton Benjamin. The crowd reacted as if they didn't know who Dreamer was. There was a very small ECW chant that broke out but other than that, the crowd was dead for this one.
8. Edge defeated Batista to retain the World Heavyweight Title. Edge stalled for about 15 minutes (just ridiculous). There was a sign in the crowd that said, "Edge is a Drama Queen,” which he referenced. The crowd chanted "Drama Queen" throughout most of the match.
Teddy Long came out half way through the match and said since Vickie Guererro wasn't there, he was in charge. He said that if Edge got intentionally DQ’d, that the title would change hands tonight. Yeah...like that was going to happen. Edge won after one of his two cronies helped him distract the ref before Edge hit a low blow. He followed up with a spear for the win.
Overall, I wasn't too impressed with the show. The crowd absolutely bolted out of there after the final bell hit. There was a post-match beatdown that most of the fans didn't stick around to see. Plenty of wrestlers seemed to be going through the motions. But I guess they were only in Oshkosh, Wisc. in front of only about 4,000 or so fans.
Kelly Kelly came out half way through the show to toss t-shirts to the crowd. I shouldn't have to say how good she looked in person. The biggest surprise had to be Matt Hardy. The biggest disappointment by far was no Hornswoggle appearance in his hometown. Too bad really. They hyped his return in the papers for quite some time now.
Biggest Pops
1. Batista (I don't get Batista. He can't wrestle, appears to be completely juiced up, but still gets cheered like crazy. Puzzling...)
2. Matt Hardy
3. CM Punk
Most Heat
1. Edge
2. MVP
3. Chavo
