3/17 WWE SuperShow in Providence results: C.M. Punk vs. Dolph Ziggler for the WWE Championship, Santino Marella vs. Jack Swagger for the U.S. Title, Eve walks out on a tag team partner
Mar 18, 2012 - 11:15 AM

WWE SuperShow live event
Providence, R.I. at Dunkin' Donuts Center
Report by Dot Net reader Michael James

The arena was packed - a lot of women and kids in the audience, as it seemed like a real big night for families here. I was seated about ten rows back on the floor on the opposite side of the ring relative to the entrance ramp.

1. Santino Marella defeated Jack Swagger (w/Vickie Guerrero) to retain the U.S. Title. Vickie Guerrero introduced Swagger and was given her usual major heat. Santino was so over with the crowds, particularly the kids. About what you would expect from this match, plenty of comedy/crowd rallying spots and Swagger dominating for most of the match. For some reason (St. Paddy’s Day?), Hornswoggle came out and bit Swagger on the butt, allowing Santino to hit the Cobra for the win.

2. R-Truth beat The Miz. Miz came out first to more cheers then boos. He mocked the crowd and whined about not having a WrestleMania match yet. He certainly made it seem that he won’t be in the 6 on 6 tag match by saying, "If I can’t have a WrestleMania match, nobody can," and threatened to take out the whole roster. Truth came out to his old "What’s Up" rapping style. Truth won with the Little Jimmy (jumping STO).

3. Beth Phoenix and Natalya defeated Eve and Tamina. Eve was out first saying she felt terrible and she wanted to prove to the WWE fans that she is not the person she has been the past few weeks. Tamina worked the entire match as Eve teased the hot tag toward the end but walked out on Tamina. Beth scored the pin with the Glam Slam.

4. Chris Jericho beat Kofi Kingston. Jericho and Kingston both received cheers during their entrances. About what you would expect from these two. Kofi survived the Walls of Jericho, hit Trouble in Paradise, but Jericho got his leg on the rope to avoid the pin. Jericho poked Kingston in the eye when his back was turned and hit the Codebreaker for a decisive three count.

5. Big Show defeated Daniel Bryan by disqualification. This match translated very well live, and Big Show’s size is very impressive next to Bryan in person. Typical match for these two with Show dominating a cowardly Bryan early but with Bryan taking control late working over the knee. Bryan went for a top rope move only to have Big Show hit the WMD on him. Jack Swagger randomly rushed the ring and attacked Big Show for the DQ. Show chokeslammed Swagger. Bryan spent a long time selling the Big Show punch.

Intermission

6. Primo and Epico (w/Rosa Mendes) defeated Zack Ryder and Mason Ryan to retain the WWE Tag Titles. Ryder received a good pop from the crowd. Mason Ryan is truly enormous in person. Ryder worked most of the match, but got the hot tag to Ryan, who got in some offense before taking a Double Backstabber from the champs (they both pulled him back but each of them used only one knee).

7. John Cena defeated Kane in a Last Man Standing match. Cena got a huge reaction from the crowd. This match was tough to see from floor seats as at least half of it was outside the ring. Cena withstood chairs, a ring bell, a microphone, and being thrown through a table in the corner. Cena hit the Attitude Adjustment on Kane for the victory. The crowd was hot for Cena, but the match itself was not really that great.

8. CM Punk defeated Dolph Ziggler (w/Vickie Guerrero) to retain the WWE Championship. Vickie came out with Ziggler but did not actually introduce him and as a result he got a similar reaction to Miz in that there were more cheers then boos at first. Punk received a huge ovation (only second to Cena). Punk talked before the match about how Jericho left after his match earlier and was surrounded by security to protect him from Punk. Punk said he intended to kick Jericho’s ass for what he said last Monday.

The match of the night was between these two for sure. Ziggler did the usual showoff routine in the match. Punk hit Ziggler with a kick to the head late in the match, but Vickie put Ziggler’s foot on the ropes. She was ejected by the referee, much to the delight of the crowd. A ref bump led to an apparently still present Jericho rushing out and hitting Punk with the Codebreaker. Punk kicked out of Ziggler’s pin attempt and warded off the Zig Zag shortly after. Punk kicked Jericho in the head while Jericho was standing on the apron and then hit the Go-To-Sleep on Ziggler for the win.

Overall: It is always nice to see the WWE Superstars up close, but this was my first house show. I don’t know if I have high standards or that it is just like this at all WWE house shows or they are just doing their best to protect wrestlers before WrestleMania, but I thought the matches never got into a high gear and everything seemed to be moving slowly in terms of action. The lack of pyrotechnics at the event took something out of the show, particularly the entrances of Jericho, Kingston, and Kane. Still, it was a decent show in terms of action and it is great to watch the wrestlers in person.

Biggest Pop:
John Cena
CM Punk
Santino Marella
Big Show
Zack Ryder
Kofi Kingston

Most Heat:
Vickie Guerrero
Daniel Bryan
The Miz
Dolph Ziggler
Jack Swagger
