7/27 WWE Raw in Altoona, Pa.: John Cena and Cryme Tyme vs. Chris Jericho and Cody Rhodes and Ted DiBiase, Jericho hugs Cody in front of taunting fans after the show
Jul 28, 2008 - 09:25 AM

WWE Raw house show report
Altoona, Pa. at the Jaffa Mosque
Report by Dot Net reader John Berger of Altoona, Pa.

First, a little history: The last time WWE was here was ECW in August 06. Prior to that there had not been a wrestling show at the Jaffa since February of 1990. During a match with Brian Pillman and Tom Zenk against the Midnight Express, a fan jumped the railing and went after Jim Cornette. Cornette defended himself with his tennis racquet. Our promoter lost her license and the NWA never returned to Altoona.

The crowd was hot all night. They were into everything, and they were LOUD. The Jaffa Mosque only holds about 4,000 people. This place is small - which may be the reason the crowd sounded so loud and into everything. This show started at 5, which seems early for a house show.

As with the West Virginia house show (on Saturday), the show started with special hostess Layla giving away front row seats, Tony Chimmel handled the ring announcing, and despite being heavily advertised, Shawn Michaels was not on the card.

1. Lance Cade defeated D-Lo Brown by pinfall. Good reaction for D-Lo. Cade had a lot of heat. Lots of D-Lo chants. Solid opening match, D-Lo was intercepted as he went up for the Lo-Down. Cade used his finisher to score the victory. As D-Lo was heading to the back, he was clutching his neck. He even complained to what I assume was a WWE road agent, some tall bald black man (more about him later). D-Lo looked upset, either he was selling Cade's finisher really well or he legitimately did something to his neck.

2. Johnny Curtis beat Matt Striker by pinfall. Striker cut a promo. "My name is..." The crowd cut him off with a You Suck! chant. "That... is not my name. My name is Matt Striker." Boos. He said some punk was making his WWE debut tonight, and he wasn't going to allow him to use a win over Striker as his claim to stardom. Um... what? He said, "Not here, not in my classroom." Loud "John-ny! John-ny!" chant to start. Not a bad match, but standard lower card fair. Curtis won with what I assume will be his finisher.

3. Mickie James and Kelly Kelly beat Beth Pheonix and Katie Lea by Pinfall. Katie Lea looks better in person than she does on TV, but her lame pose when she climbs the turnbuckles before the match needs to go. Decent, if formulaic, Divas tag match with Kelly Kelly being beat down by the heels until she made a hot tag. Mickie got the win with her DDT on Katie. Santino came down immediately and said something about he and Beth's kiss on Monday. He said that he knew what "the womens" want. Right. He said that the man he was going to face was about to retire, and that he was going to show Beth what a real man was.

4. Hacksaw Jim Duggan beat Santino Marella by pinfall. The crowd loved Duggan, yelling Hoooo! and starting a USA chant with no prompting. Duggan got on the mic and said a lot of people seem to have things to say about his retirement. "The only people who have any say in my retirement are me, my boss Mr. McMahon" Boos from the crowd. "I know, I know... Me, Mr. McMahon, and all these people here. So, let's see what you got tough guy!" The Bell rang, Duggan hit the clothesline, and the match ended. Duggan left, Santino and Beth teased kissing again before doing so, and Beth carried Santino to the back over her shoulder. We went to intermission.

As Tony Chimmel was walking to the back, I called out to him and told him he was doing a great job. He seemed genuinely surprised that a fan knew his name, because he stopped dead and looked right at me with a confused look on his face.

5. Kane beat Jamie Noble by pinfall. Layla was in the ring welcoming the crowd back from intermission. Jamie came out to ask Layla out on a date. Layla made him sing the chorus to the song Layla. He did so... terribly. Layla said she would go out with him and Kane's music hit. He came out carrying the bag. He hit the chokeslam for the pinfall in about 25 seconds.

6. Kofi Kingston beat Paul Burchill by pinfall. I must say I missed a lot of this match due to being pissed off. Our seats were right in the entrance aisle. As Kofi was coming down, some punk kid yelled "Kofi!" and slammed into my back, almost knocking me into the aisle, since we were only separated from the wrestlers by that orange plastic construction netting stuff (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v492/shatteredone/HEAVY_DUTY_SAFETY_FENCE070704.jpg). I asked the kid what his problem was, because there were kids in front of me and that he almost knocked me into the aisle.

I told him to go back to his damn seat and stay there. I informed the dude that I mentioned D-Lo complaining to earlier and he thanked me for looking out for the kids safety and said he'd keep an eye on the dude, whose seats were on the opposite side of our section. Please, I know you're excited, but if your seats aren't right next to the aisle, don't go running across your section to get there. Stay in your damn seat. Sorry, all I know about this one was that Kofi won by pinfall.

7. John Cena and Cryme Time beat Chris Jericho and Ted DiBiase Jr. and Cody Rhodes by submission when DiBiase tapped out to the STFU. Lance Cade came out with Jericho. He got on the mic and said if we didn't respect Jericho, he wouldn't talk and he wouldn't wrestle. After teasing leaving, he got on the mic and pointed out a fan at ringside saying "You want to chant HBK?" He cut a promo saying he retired Shawn Michaels, and that the only people he trusted were Lance, himself, and the Tag Team Champions.

The tag champs came out next, followed by Cryme Tyme. Cena came out and I swear I thought the roof was literally going to blow off. I have never heard any arena get as loud as this one did for John Cena. As I said, the Jaffa is small, so the size of the place may have amplified it, but it was very, very loud. Even Cena looked surprised at how loud the crowd was cheering for him. The faces charged the ring and the heels bailed. Jericho, Cade, DiBiase and Rhodes were all over on one side as Jericho was jaw jacking with a fan. Cena got on the mic and said: "Chris... Chris. Hey, Jericho. Talk to him all you want but he knows, you know, and I know that if he hits you, he will be arrested. If we hit you, nothing's gonna happen to us, so why don't you get in here and we'll go?" Nothing special here.

Cena played Ricky Morton until hot tagging Shad, who cleaned house, got things under control and then tagged JTG, who took over playing Ricky Morton until hot tagging Cena. The finish saw Rhodes DDTing JTG, Cena FU'ing Rhodes, DiBiase applied the Million Dollar Dream on Cena and turned it into a sort of cobra clutch neckbreaker, Shad hit a big move on Dibiase, and Jericho hit the Codebreaker on Shad. Cena recovered, cleared the ring, hit a double 5 knuckle shuffle on DiBiase and Rhodes, playing it up by dusting off both shoulders before dropping two fists, and then applied the STFU on DiBiase for the win.

8. CM Punk beat Batista and JBL in a no DQ, triple threat match by pinfall over JBL. JBL cut a promo about how he had "Sold out arenas in Europe, Japan, Mexico, Texas, New York" etc. He said that we paid to see him, not the other way around, so who did that make better? He said, "When i win the World Heavyweight Championship tonight, I will make sure that WWE never comes back to...."

JBL asked Chimmel where he was. Tony told him "Altoona, Pa." JBL asked him again. Great Stuff. He said, "JBL is in a SHRINER'S MOSQUE!?" he was yelling so loud he got distorted over the microphone. He said that this place may be the pride of our city (it's not really, by the way) but we're better known for a college just up the road whose claim to fame is a 105 year old coach and four criminals. Man, he may be a little out of date with the criminal comment, but the dude does his research.

Batista came out next. During his entrance, he walked to the end of the aisle, turned and went back to the beginning and started his little gatling gun routine. When he was done, instead of throwing his arm in the air, he looked to the side, shoved his middle finger right in some guys face and very audibly said, "F--- you." No idea what was going on there. He was still slapping the fans hands and acknowledging them, but that was very odd for him.

CM Punk came out next, and got a nice reaction. When he hit the ring, JBL came back up the aisle, holding the ring bell hammer. Tony Chimmel announced that due to the text voting, this would be a No DQ match. JBL charged the ring and started bitching. The bell rang and Batista and Punk were talking. Batista told Punk to ignore JBL, simply waving him off. JBL took exception to that, and got double teamed. He was knocked to the outside, and stayed there for a good five or six minutes until Batista threw Punk outside.

Punk rammed Batista into the ringpost, and JBL took advantage of an unaware Punk, clotheslining him. JBL tossed Batista into the ring and went for the pin, but only got two. Punk hit a nice flurry a little later, hitting his high knee on Batista in one corner, then hitting it and the bulldog on JBL in the opposite corner. The finish saw Batista hitting the Batista Bomb on JBL, and Punk came into the ring and hit Batista with a chair, covering JBL and getting the pin. Batista gave Punk the Batista Bomb after the match, and they called it a night.

Notes: Overall, a fun show. Big thumbs down to two matches that were under 30 seconds, though. Otherwise, it was fun seeing wrestling at the Jaffa again. After the show, everyone was gathered outside to watch the wrestlers leave. Johnny Curtis was traveling with Rhodes, DiBiase, and some blonde chick who I didn't recognize. Might have been DiBiase's girlfriend, as they sat together in the back, with Rhodes riding shotgun and Curtis driving.

In a fun moment, some fans were giving Rhodes heat, asking him if his dad was proud of him. Jericho, who was getting into his car at the same time, came over and gave Rhodes a hug, then told him not to pay attention to us and went back to his car. He stopped, looked at the crowd for a moment, and then waved at us as if saying, "forget you" and left in his car. Jericho was traveling alone. Cena also appeared to be traveling alone.

I ran into Kelly Kelly, who was traveling with Layla, at a Sheetz convenience store just up the road. She was great, signing autographs for people and being really nice. I went up and told her that I just wanted to say that she was getting better in the ring every week (she's still not great, but she has had a lot of improvement lately). She said, "Awww, thank you so much, that means a lot." I asked her if she was going to have a run with the women's championship anytime soon and she smiled sheepishly and said she hoped so. I'm not a big Kelly Kelly fan, but the girl is a sweetheart and she is getting a lot better in the ring than she used to be.

What did you think of WWE's Jeff Hardy "unconscious in a stairwell" storyline?
It was a brilliant final hook for the pay-per-view.
It was a turnoff, but it's par for the course with WWE.
It was one of the sleaziest stunts the company has ever done.
