WWE Raw house show report
Wheeling, W. Va.
Report by Dot Net reader Ben Hough of Pittsburgh, Pa.
The arena was about half full with most of the lower and middle bowl sections filled. There were many families and small children in the crowd.
The show started with "guest host" Layla giving a family front row seats after correctly answering a trivia question.
Tony Chimmel handled the ring announcing.
Even though he was heavily advertised throughout the week and was listed on the wesbancoarena.com website, Shawn Michaels was not on the card.
1. D-Lo Brown beat Lance Cade. No reaction at all for Cade. D-Lo got a nice pop and the crowd popped for his signature moves. Short match with D-Lo hitting the frog splash for the clean win.
2. Johnny Curtis beat Matt Striker. Striker got some nice heel heat before the match after cutting a promo about wanting to end young superstars hopes and dreams the way his dreams were crushed. Pretty interesting promo. Very slow match with tons of rest spots. Curtis pinned Striker clean and got a mild pop for the win.
3. Mickie James and Kelly Kelly beat Beth Phenix and Katie Lea. Micke got the first big reaction of the night. Long match with Mickie getting the win after a DDT on Katie Lea. Immediately after the match Santino came to the ring to comfort Beth, who was still in the ring. He cut a promo, and started talking about Hacksaw Jim Duggan needing to retire which led to match #4.
4. Hacksaw Duggan beat Santino in under 10 seconds. Duggan got a really nice pop. The match ended when Duggan caught Santino by surprise with the running clothesline. After the match, Beth gave Santino a kiss and carried him to the back.
5. Kane beat Jamie Noble in under 20 seconds. Noble came to the ring to talk to Layla, who was welcoming the crowd back from intermission. Kane than came out and chokeslammed Noble after no-selling a few punches. Noble got absolutely no reaction at all. Kane did receive a pretty good pop for his entrance, but the crowd seemed very confused throughout the segment.
6. Kofi Kingston beat Paul Burchill. Arn Anderson was watching the match from the curtain. A pretty good match with little to no heat. Kofi won clean and after the match spent some time around ringside playing to the crowd.
7. John Cena and Cryme Time beat Chris Jericho, Ted Dibiase Jr. and Cody Rhodes. This was a really long match. Jericho cut a promo before the match running down Shawn Michaels and saying his career was over. Jericho got monster heat. John Cena got a thundering ovation. It was definitely a pro-Cena crowd. The heat was off the charts for this match. Cena pinned Dibiase after an FU. The crowd was just insane for Cena, and the faces stayed in the ring for a while and posed for the fans. Not a great match, but for a house show it was pretty solid.
8. C.M. Punk beat Batista and JBL in a no DQ, triple threat match. JBL came out to the biggest heel heat of the night. He cut an awesome heel promo saying once he won the belt, he would make sure the WWE never came back to Wheeling. Batista got the second biggest pop of the night. The place just went insane for his entrance. Punk came out to zero reaction from the crowd. It seemed as if no one knew who he was. I was very surprised for the lack of reaction to him.
The match itself was nothing special. It was mostly Batista dominating throughout. Punk got a little offensive flurry in, but for the most part was treated as a joke. The finish came after Batista hit JBL, and Punk then sent Batista to the floor and covered JBL for the win. The fans seemed pretty pissed with the finish. The ending did nothing for Punk, as he once again took advantage of a situation created by someone else to score the win.
After the match Batista gave Punk the Batista Bomb to a massive pop and went to the back. The crowd started filing out at that point. JBL came back in the ring and Punk gave him The Go To Sleep. Again, there was no reaction at all. Most fans had already begun filing out. Punk than went around ringside and headed to the back to little fanfare. He seemed very confused by the lack of reaction.
Notes: It would seem to me that the way Punk is being pushed as a lucky champion who's barely getting by is turning off the fans. I was completely baffled by the lack of reaction to his entrance. The fans seemed really turned off by the finish because it again made Punk out to be a champion who can't win without luck.
Lots of fans were disappointed that Shawn Michaels didn't appear as advertised.
Overall, it was a very lackluster show, however the six-man tag was really solid and the divas tag match had pretty good heat as well.
Biggest Pops
1. John Cena
2. Batista
3. Cryme Time
4. Kane for his entrance
Biggest heat
1. JBL
2. Chris Jericho
3. Beth Phenix
4. Matt Striker for his pre-match promo
