Dec 17, 2011 - 10:02 AM

WWE Raw live event
Fort Myers, Fla.
Report by Dot Net reader Omar Oquendo

1. Air Boom (Kofi Kingston and Evan Bourne) defeated Primo and Epico (w/Rosa Mendes) by pinfall to retain the WWE Tag Team Championship. Epico started by hitting an arm drag takedown on Bourne. Bourne returned the favor by hitting an arm drag takedown of his own and a drop kick for good measure. Primo tags in, and Bourne connects on a flying huracanrada. Epico tags back in and dropkicks Bourne onto the floor. Rosa was taunting Bourne when he was down. Rosa wasn't an important factor to this match (although she was wearing a nice silver mini-skirt and a few catcalls were hurled her way by the fans).

While staring at Kingston in the corner, Epico mocks Kingston with the boom hand gesture Kingston does when setting up for Trouble in Paradise. More double team work took place by Primo and Epico onto Bourne, but then Kofi finally got the hot tag. Kingston connected on several punches and kicks to Primo and Epico. The finish of the match came when Kingston hit Trouble in Paradise onto Primo, and Bourne tagged in to hit the shooting star press to get the pinfall and retain the WWE tag team titles. Good opening match, and good effort by all 4 men.

2. Daniel Bryan defeated Dean Ambrose by submission with the LeBell Lock. This is the first time I see Ambrose in action. Not very clear as to what gimmick he is trying to portray since he didn't get on the mic to cut a promo. Ambrose's character was a bit strange, mainly with constantly shaking of his head throughout the match. I should also point out that on the back of Ambrose's tights was written "Explicit Ambrose Violence." Make your own judgements on that.

Lots of back and forth action, with Ambrose bodyslamming and connecting on a shoulder tackle to Bryan. Bryan bounced back with a dropkick and a European uppercut. The finish of the match was when Bryan hooked the LeBell lock on Ambrose to score the submission victory. Very good match. Even though Ambrose lost the match, he was sharp and competitive throughout the match. Ambrose could be a major player for the WWE down the road. Post match: Dolph Ziggler ran into the ring and hit the Zig Zag on Daniel Bryan, drawing lots of boos in the process from the crowd.

3. Eve and Alicia Fox defeated Beth Phoenix and Natalya by pinfall. Natalya and Beth came to the ring with a box of tissue paper, mocking Eve and Alicia that they were going to cry after the match. However, Alicia snatched the box of tissues away and tossed it to the crowd. Early on in the match, Eve and Alicia were dominating Beth and Natalya. There was a spot when Beth was laying on top of Natalya, and Eve hit a standing moonsault onto both ladies.

Alicia tagged in, and that's when Natalya and Beth dominated with lots of punches and kicks to Alicia. Natalya attempted the sharpshooter on Alicia, but Alicia was able to break out of that hold and moved out of the way of an attempted legdrop by Natalya. Alicia gave the hot tag to Eve. Eve connected on a drop kick as well as another standing moonsault onto Natalya. Finish of the match saw Alicia tackle Beth out of the ring, and Eve scored the pinfall with a rollup on Natalya. Not a very good match.

4. Ted Dibiase defeated Jinder Mahal by pinfall. Lots of USA chants at the start the match. Dibiase dominated early, with 10 punches to Mahal in a corner, along with a suplex and dropkick. Mahal was stalling outside the ring, but then surprised Dibiase with a knee to the face and shoulder when Dibiase was down on the mat. Mahal attempted to lock in a full nelson, but Dibiase was able to break out of it. Dibiase connected on a boot to the face and a running clothesline. Finish of the match was when Dibiase connected on dream street and picked up the pinfall. Good match and good back and forth action by both men.

Post match: While Dibiase was about to sign an autograph to a fan in the front row, Dolph Ziggler ran out again and gave him a cheap shot punch to the back of his head, once again drawing lots of boos from the crowd, just like he did 2 matches earlier with Daniel Bryan.

5. John Cena defeated The Miz by pinfall in a street fight. Prior to the start of the match, ring announcer Eden Stiles mentioned that this was a "Fans choice match" where the crowd selected what type of match we would get. The options were a 2 out of 3 falls match, falls count anywhere match and a street fight. Majority of the fans were in unanimous agreement with choosing the street fight as the stipulation for this match. Miz was cutting a promo and he was making fun of the fans that were yelling that he sucks. At one point, Miz put the mic back and forth in front of the referee and in front of ring announcer Eden Stiles, who were not booed, whereas when Miz had the mic in front of himself, the fans booed loudly. Cena arrived, and the crowd erupted in cheers (me, not so much). When the street fight was announced as the stipulation for the match, Cena surprised Miz with several punches at a corner and then tossed Miz out of the ring. Surprisingly, there was no chants of "Let's go Cena, Cena sucks" from this crowd in Ft. Myers.

Cena and Miz brawled for a bit outside the ring, and one spot saw Cena tossing Miz into the steel wall that's near the entrance ramp. Lots of back and forth action throughout this match, because when Cena tossed Miz back into the ring, Miz hit Cena with the microphone at the top of Cena's head. Cena storms back by grabbing the same microphone and hits Miz with it on top of his head. Miz came back by hitting Cena with a kick to the face. Once again, they brawled outside the ring, and Miz tossed Cena into the steel steps near the ring. Cena fought back and also tossed Miz into the steel steps near the ring. Action returns inside the ring and Miz breaks out of an AA attempt, and when Cena attempted to lock in the STF, Miz reached the ropes to break out of the hold.

While the referee was holding back Cena, Miz went to the opposite corner and removed the padding on a turnbuckle. Cena ran after Miz, but missed in the process and landed hard onto the exposed corner. Both men were down in the ring, and at this point is when Kane made his presence in this match. Kane connected on a chokeslam onto Cena. Miz attempted the pinfall, but Cena kicked out. Cena fought back against Miz and Kane returned to the ring, but Cena clotheslined Kane out of the ring. Cena hit the AA on Miz and scored the pinfall. Good match, lots of back and forth action, and good effort by both men.

A dance contest was held featuring four WWE fans randomly selected from the audience. Hornswoggle made an appearance for this contest. The first two participants were not very good. Hornswoggle danced with participant number three when it was her turn, which drew lots of cheers from the crowd. However, participant number four stole the show with his breakdancing moves and was declared the winner, earning a VIP backstage tour to meet and greet the WWE superstars in the dressing room. This led to a 10 minute intermission.

7. Zack Ryder defeated Dolph Ziggler (w/Vickie Guerrero) by disqualification, thus Ziggler retains the WWE US Championship. Before the match started, Vickie came out to introduce Dolph Ziggler and yelled her famous "EXCUSE ME!!!" line, drawing lots of boos from the crowd. Ziggler and Ryder squared off and Ziggler connected on a headlock takedown on Ryder. Ryder bounced back by connecting on a flapjack and clotheslining Ziggler out of the ring. They brawled for a bit out of the ring, and once the action resumed inside the ring, Ziggler hit a clothesline and neckbreaker on Ryder.

Eventually Ryder got his second wind and connected on a front face suplex and a dropkick from the top rope onto Ziggler. Ziggler was down in a corner, and Ryder did his fist pump to the crowd and hit a running kick to Ziggler's face. The finish of the match was when Ryder was eyeing Ziggler to attempt the Rough Ryder, but Vickie grabbed Ryder's foot to distract him. Ziggler grabbed his US title and hit Ryder on his back, causing the disqualification victory for Ryder. After the match, Ryder did hit the Rough Ryder, but it was too little too late. Overall, good match by both men, but the crowd was not happy with the cheap DQ finish.

8. Big Show defeated Jack Swagger by pinfall. Surprisingly, Vickie Guerrero did not come out for Jack Swagger in this match (even though she was with Dolph Ziggler in the previous match). Show dominated early, with two open hand slaps to Swagger's chest that could be heard in the entire arena, and then Show stepped on top of Swagger. Swagger came back with a tackle to Show's knee and a chop block to bring Show down in the mat. Show attempted a choke slam, but Swagger reversed it into a DDT. Swagger had Show in the ankle lock, but Show broke out of the hold, and hit the KO punch to score the pinfall. Decent match.

9. CM Punk defeated Alberto Del Rio (w/Ricardo Rodriguez) by pinfall to retain the WWE Championship. Ricardo Rodriguez introduced Alberto Del Rio to the crowd, but Rodriguez was not insulting the fans in Spanish as he tends to normally do. Del Rio did not come out in a car on the entrance ramp. Fans briefly chanted "We want ice cream" to Punk. Lots of back and forth action to start the match. Del Rio hit a shoulder tackle onto Punk. Punk came back with a hip toss and a kick to the right knee. When Del Rio was outside the ring talking to Rodriguez, Punk did a running dive outside the ring and landed on both Del Rio and Rodriguez, which got the crowd fired up. Punk threw Del Rio back inside the ring, where they exchanged more punches and kicks.

Del Rio tossed Punk outside the ring, and Rodriguez kicked Punk a few times while he was laying down on the ground. Punk got upset and started chasing Rodriguez around the ring. Del Rio connected on a diving kick through the ropes onto Punk. Del Rio began attacking Punk's left arm to soften him up for his cross arm breaker. Punk fought back and was going to attempt to hit the GTS on Del Rio. However, Del Rio reversed the GTS into a DDT and nearly got the pinfall. Del Rio locked in the cross arm breaker on Punk, but Punk was able to reach the ropes with his feet, prompting the referee to force Del Rio to break the hold.

Punk fought back with a neckbreaker, bulldog and clothesline off the top rope. Del Rio hit the backcracker and had Rodriguez place a chair in front of Punk so Del Rio could tackle the chair onto Punk's face. However, Punk moved out of the way, and Del Rio tackled the chair into Rodriguez's face, sending him down on the floor. Punk connected on the GTS and scored the pinfall, retaining the WWE championship and sending all the fans happy. Great match to close the show.

Final thoughts: Great show tonight. Full house on hand at the Germain Arena, as the crowd was vocal and electric throughout the night. Lots of back and forth action in nearly all the matches. Driving 2 hours from Miami to the Gulf Coast near Ft. Myers for this show was well worth the trip. Great effort by all the superstars in tonight's matches. Overall, fun show. Can't wait for Wrestlemania 28 on April 1st, 2012 at Sun Life Stadium.
