12/27 WWE Smackdown in Pittsburgh: Edge vs. Kane for the World Hvt. Championship, NXT winner and developmental wrestler work matches, Pittsburgh Penguins player attends the show
Dec 28, 2010 - 09:12 AM

WWE Smackdown Live Event
Pittsburgh, Pa.
Report by Dot Net reader Dan Telek

I showed up about an hour before show time with my friend so I decide to go and buy some merchandise. There are kids everywhere. I literally got cut in line five times making my five-minute wait 45 minutes. Don't these kids realize Christmas was two days ago?

So in line I hear the Smackdown theme play and I got back during a Teddy Long promo, which I wasn't paying attention during.

1. Kofi Kingston won a battle royale to earn a shot at the Interconentinental Title. The other entrants were Tyler Reks, Mason Ryan, Ezekiel Jackson, Trent Baretta, Chavo Guerrero, Percy Watson, Drew McIntyre, Chris Masters, Jack Swagger, and JTG, and Cody Rhodes.

Kofi was the only one who got any real reaction because everyone came out at once to the Smackdown theme song. It was a solid 8 minute match to pump up the crowd. Kofi got a big pop after he won.

2. Mason Ryan defeated Chavo Guerrero. Ryan, who looks like Batista, was said to hail from Pittsburgh to get a reaction, but I'm pretty sure he's actually from the U.K. He seemed sluggish, but wasn't too bad. He won with a Black Hole Slam type move.

3. Kelly Kelly and Beth Phoenix defeated Layla and Naomi. The second I heard the Laycool song I nearly freaked out, but no Michelle McCool, so it's slightly better. This match was easily 10 minutes plus and each was agonizing. Naomi is so green I felt bad for her. Six of the ten minutes of the match was Layla just stalling and it was so boring. The match finally, FINALLY, ended, and Layla attacked Kelly. So Hornswoggle came out and fended off Layla. It was awful.

Surprisingly (sarcasm), a lot of people left in droves after this match.

4. Drew McIntyre defeated Trent Baretta. This match was decent, but it took forever to start because McIntyre stalled and stalled and then stalled some more. That was a common theme in the night so much stalling. Drew won a rather quick match with the Future Shock.

5. Rey Mysterio and Big Show defeated Alberto Del Rio and Cody Rhodes.
Del Rio got the biggest heat of the night by far. He cut a promo about a fan who had a "Rey Mysterio Rocks/Alberto Del Rio Sucks" sign. He tore up the poster and then Cody said he was the best looking guy which got some heat.

Show then got one of the biggest pops of the night. He cut a promo praising the Pittsburgh Penguins and Steelers and mentioning how great the meatball subs are when Pittsburgh is better for Permanti Bros. and perigees. He then had to rip on the Pirates, what a jerk.

The match was entertaining with Show doing his quiet chest slap and a spot where Mysterio drop kicked Rhodes in the testicles and then drop toeing Del Rio onto Rhodes' private area making it look as if Del Rio was performing fellatio for about 10 seconds. Nice PG programming for the whole ending. The babyfaces won after Mysterio performed a double splash off of Show's shoulders.

There was a brief intermission.

6. Chris Masters defeated Jack Swagger. This was better than I expected, but wasn't that great. The match ended with Masters countering the Ankle Lock into a roll up.

7. Dolph Ziggler defeated Kofi Kingston to retain the Intercontinental Championship. This was by far the match of the night. Entertaining beginning of end with great back and forth action. Ziggler won after countering the trouble in paradise with a Zig Zag.

8. Edge defeated Kane to retain the World Heavyweight Championship in a Cage Match. There was a five minute break to put up the cage. Edge got the biggest pop by far and Kane got some good heat. It was an alright cage match with one or two nice spots and Edge won by escaping.

After the match, Edge put over Consol Energy Center and the Pittsburgh Penguins. He said Pittsburgh is the City of Champions and if Penguins do anything, just beat Alexander Ovechkin. He then pointed out Pittsburgh Penguins Forward Matt Cooke in the front row. He thanked the crowd and then posed. The show was over.

Other Notes:

-Fink was the announcer and it was awesome

-Kaitlyn was a guest hostess and asked a kid a question which is the next pay-per-view and got a kiss on the cheek and was a guest time keeper. She also threw shirts into the crowd.

-There were about 8,000 people there with the entire upper bowl tarped off

-The crowd seemed rather on the quiet side, but got alive toward the end of the show

-Lots of kids, they were everywhere

Biggest Pops:
1. Edge
2. Big Show
3. Rey Mysterio
4. Kofi Kingston
5. Mason Ryan (they said he's from Pittsburgh)

Biggest Heat:
1. Del Rio (by FAR)
2. Kane
3. Dolph Ziggler
4. Drew McIntyre
5. Cody Rhodes
