1/15 Shore's WWE Smackdown Live Coverage: Chris Jericho vs. John Morrison, Tag Team Tournament for a tag title shot, Dolph Ziggler, vs Kane, The Diva's saga continues, and Batista vs. Rey Mysterio in a cage to face Undertaker at the Royal Rumble
Jan 15, 2010 - 07:00 PM

Smackdown on MyNetwork TV
Taped on 1/12/10 in Green Bay, Wisc.

[Q1]A video package recapped the current Mysterio/Batista feud. The opening video aired, followed by the pyro, and Todd Grisham and Matt Striker welcomed us to Smackdown. They hyped the cage match...Chris Jericho made his ring entrance. Jericho sported a badly done busted mouth from the Tyson shot. A video package recapped the Jericho/Tyson/DX match from Monday. Jericho cut a promo on getting screwed on Raw and being the best. No shocker there. He said he was the baddest man on the planet and the face of Smackdown. He put himself over as the Rumble winner. Morrison made his ring entrance...

1. Chris Jericho defeated John Morrison at 10:41. They mouthed off at each other and Jericho pushed Morrison. Morrison slapped him and then closed him over the top rope. Morrison went to the top, but Drew McIntyre's music hit and he came to the ring in street clothes...[C]

Back at 4:22, Morrison slammed Jericho. Jericho tried to fight back, but Morrison hit a backbreaker into a side Russian leg sweep for two. He pushed Jericho into the corner and tried for the chuck kick, but Jericho pushed him over the top rope. Jericho posed in the ring.

[Q2]Jericho went and got Morrison and locked in a rest hold. Morrison escaped and hit a flying heel kick for two. Jericho came right back with a running bulldog. He stomped on Morrison who hit the chuck kick out of nowhere for two. Morrison tried for a drop kick, but Jericho reversed into a Walls of Jericho attempt. Morison powered out and went for Starship Pain. Jericho rolled away and again tried for Walls of Jericho. Morrison rolled up for two. Morrison went for Moonlight Drive, but Jericho reversed into Walls of Jericho in the middle of the ring.

McIntyre got up from the announce table and stood beside the ring. He glared at Morrison and held the IC belt up. Morrison crawled to the rope right in front of McIntyre. He slugged Jericho and then started to attack McIntyre. The ref stopped him and Morrison turned around into a Code Breaker. Jericho covered for the win. Post match, McIntyre got in the ring and stomped Morrison a few times before leaving...The cage was shown above the ring and the announce team hyped the main event, then and CM Punk for next...[C]

Shore’s Slant: Good opening match. Jericho elevates the Intercontinental Championship when he's not even involved in the feud. Amazing. I hate Morrison lost, but I understand the booking. Now give them some more mic time.

Back from commercial, CM Punk and Luke Gallows made their entrance. A video package showed Punk shaving the guys head last week. Punk said we all saw it last week, how he saved another person. He said it would continue until we all joined him, “One nation, under Punk, with integrity and sobriety for all.” Clever. He said all of us could look like Gallows if we wanted it bad enough. Gallows took the mic and said Punk could save all of us. Punk said he would be the first straight edge Royal Rumble winner. The crowd chanted “You suck” and Punk said what sucked was the crowd didn't want to be saved, so he had to do it one person at a time. He looked for his next victim.

[Q3]Punk picked some guy and they brought him in the ring. The guys name was Trevor. Punk cut his promo on drugs and alcohol and then asked Trevor if he was ready for a change. Every time Punk mentioned booze, the Green Bay crowd popped big. Punk had Trevor raise his hand and accept straight edge and CM Punk. Trevor said yes, and Punk shaved his head in the same mangy way as last week. Punk said it was the only good decision Trevor had ever made. He introduced Trevor as the newest member of the straight edge society...Khali's music hit and he, Mini-Me, and Matt Hardy made their ring entrance as the announce team hyped the Fatal Four-way match for next...[C]

Shore’s Slant: They dial the religious rhetoric way back this week and I felt did a much better job of presenting the angle without risking offending someone. That said, I'm ready for the pay off. Somebody new will probably refuse the hair cut and start feuding with them. Next week would be good. Who the hell is making these teams? Khali and Matt Hardy? WTF?

Back from commercial, the Harts made their ring entrance, followed by Cryme Tyme...

2. C.M. Punk and Luke Gallows defeated Matt Hardy and Great Khali, The Hart Dynasty, and Cryme Tyme in a Fatal Four-way tag match to become the No. 1 contenders for the Unified Tag Team Championship at 6:49. Hardy and Smith started. Smith took quick control with elbows. He tried to slam Hardy, but Hardy reversed into a neckbreaker. Hardy tagged in Khali who clotheslined Smith to the floor. He went after him and Kidd ran over. Hardy ran over and they all stared off into the break...[C]

[Q4]Back at 4:31, Gallows slapped Khali. He hit the ropes, but Kahli chopped him. He called for the Khalibomb, but JTG tagged in and covered while Khali just watched. Gallows immediately retook control and tagged in Punk. JTG reversed a whip and hit a front bulldog. He covered, and Kidd and Gallows made the save. Khali came in and everyone except Punk, Gallows, and JTG were taken out. Gallows got a blind tag. JTG hit Roll the Bones and covered. Gallows hit a big boot and followed with Gallows Pole for the win. Post match, Trevor got back in the ring to celebrate with Punk and Gallows...

Backstage, Josh Matthews knocked on Batista's dressing room door. He tried to interview Dave, who kept saying he had nothing to say. He finally said the interview was over and threatened Josh if he asked another question or knocked on the door. He slammed the door and Josh did his creepy stare into the break...[C]

Shore’s Slant: An OK match. Fatal fourway tag matches are generally clusters, and this one was to a point. The Punk/Gallows vs DX feud could be money if it's done right. Especially with all the overtones of salvation and what not. I'm interested to see how Shawn handles this.

Back from commercial, Undertaker made his long ass entrance. He cut a promo, doing all of his dead man gimmick stuff. He said last week Mysterio and Batista got a warning. He said it didn't matter who won tonight because he was hell bent on destruction. He said he was thinking about Wrestlemania. He said no one had ever wanted any more of him at Mania. He said one shone brightly in defeat, and that was Shawn Michaels.

[Q5]He said HBK had taken him the farthest, but had failed like the rest. He said HBK had the gall to challenge him again. He said he would give his answer in person on Raw, and either way, HBK would rest.....in.....peace...The announce team hyped the main event...[C]

Shore’s Slant: Standard Taker promo. Monday should be hot with he and Michaels.

Back from commercial, Mickie James made her ring entrance. A video recapped her current feud Beth and LayCool. Beth was out next. Beth tried to attack Mickie, but the ref held her back...

3. Mickie James defeated Beth Phoenix by disqualification at 3:04. Beth went right at Mickie and beat her to the ground. She worked heel strikes and Mickie slumped in the corner. Beth hit a reverse Bronco buster (assface) and then dropped Mickie on her head for two. She locked on a Camel Clutch. Mickie escaped and Beth hit a backbreaker for two. Mickie managed to hit a dropkick to the knee, but Beth dropped her hangman style on the top rope.

Beth tie Mickie to the tree of woe and stomped on her. The ref pulled her away several times, and finally disqualified her. LayCool ran down and stared off with Beth. Beth just left the ring and LayCool attacked Mickie. Mickie got in a few shots, but McCool hit the Faithbreaker and then celebrated up the ramp...The announce team hyped the main event...[C]

Shore’s Slant: Good match that was just getting going when the DQ happened. I understand it, but it annoys me. There seems no finish in site for this odd title triangle, which is good, but I wonder about the direction right now. Mickie and Beth don't seem to be heading towards an alliance, and LayCool is scared of Beth. I'll give it time, if for no other reason than at least it's a story, but I am concerned.

[Q6]The Smack of the Night video recapped the Dolph Ziggler vs. Kane feud...Back ringside, Kane made his ring entrance. Ziggler was backstage with Josh Matthews. He asked Ziggler about the match, and Ziggler said he was on a roll over Kane, and he would roll on to win the Rumble. Ziggler made his ring entrance...

4. Kane defeated Dolph Ziggler at 12:32. Ziggler tried to kick Kane, and Kane clotheslined him. Kane beat on Ziggler in the corner, scaring the ref away when he tried to break it up. He continued to stalk and pound Ziggler for well over a minute. Kane whipped Ziggler to the corner and charged in. Ziggler hit an elbow and locked in the sleeper. Kane dumped him over the top rope. Both men recovered into the break...[C]

Back at 6:27, Ziggler locked in a chin lock. A video showed Ziggler driving Kane into the post and steps during the break. Kane escaped and Ziggler worked him in the corner. Ziggler hit a drop kick for one and then went back to the chin lock. Kane made his feet and pushed Ziggler away.

[Q7]Kane tried for a chokeslam, but Ziggler grabbed the ropes. Ziggler charged at Kane, and he hit a big boot. Kane worked his offense and hit a powerslam for two. He went to the top, but Ziggler caught him there. Ziggler tried for a superplex, but Kane battled and sent Ziggler to the mat. Ziggler rolled to the floor. Kane went after him, and Ziggler locked on the sleeper on the floor. Kane used the post to break the hold and rolled Ziggler in the ring. Ziggler tried for and elbow as Kane rolled in, but Kane moved and hit a punch.

Kane went to the top and tried for the clothesline, but Ziggler moved and hit a running Fameassor for two. Ziggler stalked for the ZigZag, but Kane caught him and tried for a side slam. Ziggler flipped out, but Kane caught him with a chokeslam for the win. Post match, Kane popped his pyro and celebrated up the ramp...[C]

Shore’s Slant: Hell yeah. That was a hot match. I'm not going to rehash my defense of Kane anymore, I'm just going to point to this match. Great story telling, great action, great ending. Crowd popped huge, and this will be the match they remember next month when asked about the show. Nice work from both men.

Back from commercial, Todd Grisham punked the packs by pointing out the Cardinals beat them last week...A video package recapped John Cena's time as the Fiesta Bowl Grand Marshall..Backstage, Rey Mysterio was shown getting ready with his mask off. He kept his back to the camera while he finished praying and then put the mask on. He started to head towards the ring and Josh Matthews asked him how he felt about being the underdog, and the nightmare that is Batista. Rey said tonight, he wouldn't have a nightmare, but the cream of facing the Undertaker and becoming the World Champion...The cage was shown lowering to the ring...

[Q8][C]Back from commercial, Rey Mysterio made his ring entrance. He climbed the cage to enter the ring. Batista was out next. He entered through the door...

5. Rey Mysterio defeated Batista in a steel cage match to become the No. 1 contender for the World Heavyweight Championship at 7:16. Rey ran to the corner and tried to escape, but Batista caught him and drove him down to the mat. Batista worked Rey, but Rey hit a drop toe hold for a 619 setup. Rey looked at Batista and then ran up his back to try to escape. Batista caught him and drove him down between the cage and ropes. Batista choked him against the cage. Batista tossed Rey into the cage like a dart. He did it again and Rey caught the cage and tried to escape.

Batista caught him and they battled on the rope. Batista fell and Rey hit a West Coast Pop. He charged at Batista and Batista hit a big boot. Batista whipped him to the corner and ran in. Rey moved and Batista hit the cage. Rey hit a leg drop for two. He hit a springboard jump, but Batista caught him. Rey tried for a bull dog escape, but Batista drove him face first to the mat. Batista hit a huge spear and then a spinebuster. He went for the Batista bomb, but Rey grabbed the cage. He kicked Batista away and climbed the cage. Batista tried to escape the door, but Rey kicked the door and fell to the floor for the win. Rey ran back to the ramp quickly and celebrated while Batista looked stunned...

Shore’s Slant: An OK match. Mostly I'm bored with the match up, but nothing was wrong in the ring. The end was good with the door, but PG cage matches make me scratch my head. Not as much as PG Hell in a Cell, but still. I just want this to be over so Taker can drop the belt to Jericho and let him and Morrison carry Smackdown. I'll have more to say tomorrow in the hitlist. Thanks for reading and I'll see you then.
