Jan 8, 2010 - 07:00 PM

Smackdown on MyNetwork TV
Taped on 1/5/10 in Lousiville, Ky.

[Q1]A video package recapped the Beat the Clock challenge from last week...Ringside, Batista's music hit and he made his ring entrance in street clothes as Todd Grisham and Matt Striker welcomed us to Smackdown. He yelled for the music to stop. He yelled for a spotlight and then the music again. He made his entrance as the spot followed him. He whined about how Teddy Long had been screwing him and demanded Teddy explain himself or there would be no match with Mysterio.

Rey Mysterio's music hit and he came to the ramp. He called Dave a cry baby and said Dave was scared. He said Dave was scared he would beat him again. Rey asked the crowd if Dave was scared. They cheered and Dave went nuts. He said he could beat Rey any night of the week. He said not only would he beat Rey tonight, he would make sure Rey couldn't walk out. Rey said he would win and walk out tonight. His music hit and the announce team hyped the match for later...[C]

Shore’s Slant: Pretty good opening. Dave is 100000000 percent better on the stick as a heel, and I'm digging the attitude a lot. Rey was marginal here, which is what Rey is on the stick. This should be a good match as both guys work hard to put each other over and there is plenty of intensity going in.

Back from commercial, the announce team hyped the main event again...Kane made his ring entrance. Ziggler was out next. A video package recapped the Ziggler/Kane Beat the Clock match from last week, including the post match Zig Zag...

[Q2]1. Dolph Ziggler defeated Kane by countout at 6:21. Ziggler started with strikes, but Kane leveled him. Kane worked his offense and hit a sit down suplex for two. Ziggler hit a missile drop kick for one and took control. He hit a DDT for one. He jumped on Kane's back for the sleeper again, but Kane drove him back into the corner. Kane went to work and hit a clothesline, a corner clothesline, and tried for the sidewalk slam, but Ziggler slipped out. Kane hit the big boot instead and covered for a near fall. He finally hit the sidewalk slam for two.

Kane went to the top and hit the flying clothesline. He grabbed Ziggler by the throat, but Ziggler escaped and hit the Zig Zag. Kane kicked out and Ziggler went to the sleeper. Kane went to his knees, but made his feet again. Kane walked to the ropes and they both fell to the floor. Ziggler kept the sleeper on as they fell. Ziggler held the hold till the ref counted eight. He slid in the ring and Kane was counted out...The announce team hyped CM Punk saving a fan tonight...[C]

Shore’s Slant: Fun match. I like this feud. Ziggler can flat go in the ring, and Kane has proved time and again that if given a good worker, he can be very, very good. My only problem is Ziggler was almost Intercontinental champ just a couple of weeks ago and now he's in this feud. Of course Kane is a former WWE champ so it's not all bad.

Backstage Michelle McCool and Layla begged for Beth's forgiveness for last week's kick to the face. They showed her their new pig trough for Mickie. It was full of lettuce. Sigh. Beth told them to get serious because she has a match with Layla. McCool said she was happy it was Layla and not her in the match. Layla asked if McCool was going out there with her and Michelle assured her she was...

Chris Jericho was in the locker room talking to the Harts. He commended them for going after him, “The biggest star in the company,” when he told them to make an impact last week. He said it was a smart move. He asked if they were ready to continue to make an impact tonight. They assured him they were and did their catch phrase...

[Q3]R-Truth made his lame ass entrance...[C]

Shore’s Slant: Schnozzle strikes again. The Piggie James thing is over done. I can't wait for Beth to end this garbage.

Back from commercial, Cryme Tyme made their entrance. The Harts were out next, followed by Jericho...

2. Chris Jericho and The Hart Dynasty defeated R-Truth and Cryme Tyme at 10:41. Truth started against Kidd. Kidd ran the ropes and Truth hit a drop kick and tagged in JTG. He hit a double team move with Truth and tagged in Shad. Shad worked power strikes and tagged in Truth. Kidd made a hot tag to Jericho who was promptly hip tossed by Truth. Truth hit a sick big boot for a near fall. Jericho tried to mount some offense, but Truth hit a jumping heel kick that spilled Jericho onto the floor. He recovered into the break...[C]

Back at 5:55, Shad worked on Jericho. He gorilla pressed him and let him fall. Kidd distracted the ref and Smith low bridged the top rope as Shad hit it. That spilled him to the floor. Jericho rolled him back in and tagged Kidd. Kidd worked on Shad and Jericho got a cheap shot in when the faces distracted the ref. Jericho tagged back in and punched Shad. Shad tried to come back, but Jericho hit a drop kick for two.

[Q4]Jericho choked Shad on the rope and tagged in Kidd. Kidd hit a drop kick to the knee and took out Truth. Shad recovered to hit a clothesline. JTG and Jericho got the hot tags. JTG hit Roll the Bones and Kidd broke the count. Everybody took out each other out and JTG rolled up Jericho for two. He went to the second rope and jumped off, but Jericho reversed into a Walls of Jericho for the win...The announce team hyped CM Punk for next...[C]

Shore’s Slant: OK, at first I was upset about seeing CT and the Harts again. But did you see that Walls of Jericho. That was the old WCW, high arc, neckbreaker version. Not the pansy WWE Boston crab version. The match was pretty good as a whole. We lost most of it to commercial, but what we saw was pretty good. But considering four of the participants have wrestled each other roughly a google times, I'm not all that impressed.

CM Punk was introduced as “The Only Straight Edge Superstar.” What about Gallows? Isn't he straight edge now? Anyway, he and the Not Straight Edge Gallows made their entrance. Punk said he made a straight edge resolution to save a lost soul. He asked who wanted to be saved, and reminded them he could only save one. He picked a guy out and Luke escorted him to the ring. He said his name was James, which he's a plant because any real fan would have babbled their whole name out.

Punk said James thought he was hopelessly addicted and James nodded. Gallows set up a chair and James sat down. Punk said what was about to happen was the most important event of his life. He said James was about to accept Punk as his savior. Ugh. Punk had him raise his hand and asked if he was tired of living his life like the losers in the crowd. He said yes. Punk asked if he would stop treating his body like a sewer. James said he would try. Punk screamed that it was not good enough. Punk said be better stop trying and start doing.

[Q5]Punk said he needed to swear to him that he would stop doing drugs, alcohol, etc. James said he would stop. Punk said good and asked if he wanted to learn how to face temptation. James said he was going to change. Punk said it was easier said than done, and actions speak louder than words. He said James needed to do one more thing to be in the Straight Edge Society. Gallows pulled out a hair trimmer and James started to bolt. He shook his head no and Punk told him to sit down. He asked James if he was ready to accept straight edge completely.

James finally nodded and Punk shaved most of his head. Kid looked like he had the mange. Punk said now every time James looked in the mirror, he would know he was better than the rest of the sheep. He and Gallows raised James's hands and Punk introduced him as better than all of us. His music hit and they hugged James. Punks match was hyped for next...[C]

Shore’s Slant: That was strange on top of strange. I kept waiting for them to beat him up. And then the head shaving. I don't know. It was just odd. I hate the angle as a rule. I just don't think it's a great idea to put on an angle like this. I think it could be a huge backfire.

Back from commercial, a video hyped Maria on Celebrity Apprentice...Back ringside, Matt Hardy came out to Jeff's heat...

3. Luke Gallows (w/CM Punk) defeated Matt Hardy at 5:45.Striker quoted Christian prayers and used Punk in them instead. Gallows powered over Matt Hardy until Matt hit a dropkick to the knee. Matt tried for a suplex, but Gallows dropped him on the top rope and then punched him to the floor. The crowd loved the punch. Gallows worked the back on the floor and rolled Matt in the ring. He hit a back suplex for two and then applied a chin lock.

[Q6]Matt made his feet and Gallows whipped him to the corner. He missed the splash in the corner and Matt hit a moonsault on a standing Gallows for two. He followed with a tornado DDT for two. He went to the second rope and CM Punk went to the apron. Matt jumped off and took two swipes and Punk who ducked and then went back to the floor. He turned around and Gallows hit a big boot and the Gallows Pole for the win...

Backstage, Teddy Long congratulated Maria for being on the Apprentice. Vickie pushed Teddy out of the way and said Maria reminded her of herself, smart, beautiful, ambitious. Teddy asked her when it all went down hill. She told him to shut up and dragged Maria over to a table with the new WWE action figures on it. She told Maria to pitch them and Maria did. She pointed out that the figures were to scale. Teddy said he bet Vickie's figure would be the biggest of all. Then he said, “Maybe not.” Khali walked in and mumbled something. Mini-Me translated and said Khali wanted all of the figures, especially Vickie's. She looked pleased and Mini-Me finished. He said they reminded Khali of the cows back home. Khali got right in Vickie's face and said, “MOOOOOOOOOOOO!” Everybody tried to keep from laughing...[C]

Shore’s Slant: Decent match from Hardy and Gallows. Gallows is better than Hardy so I want to see him work with someone like Knox. God forgive me, I laughed at Khali. I couldn't help myself. I tried, but it was so silly.

Back from commercial, Beth Phoenix made her entrance. A video package showed her beat down of McCool last week. Layla and McCool were out next. Layla obviously didn't want to be there...

4. Beth Phoenix squashed Layla at 1:44. Layla rolled to the floor to get away from Beth and Beth called out McCool. McCool rolled Layla back in the ring and Beth continued to beat on her. Layla had a flurry of punches, but Beth hit the Glam Slam for the win. Post match, McCool got in the ring, but begged Beth to leave her alone, she just wanted to check on Layla. Layla grabbed Beth's leg and McCool kicked Beth in the face. They beat on her until Mickie made the save. Beth tossed Layla into McCool to send both to the floor. She looked at Mickie and then took a step towards her. Mickie hit the Chick Kick and left Beth laying in the ring...The announce team hyped the main event...[C]

Shore’s Slant: This angle is so good. I cannot wait for the tag match that is to come, and the apparent Triple Threat for the title should be good as well. I just hope they give them some time.

[Q7]Back from commercial, the Raw Rebound video aired...Backstage, Josh Matthews interviewed Drew McIntyre. He setup a video that recapped Drew causing Morrison to be DQed last week. He said Morrison snapped when he realized that Drew was better than him. He said he was undefeated and he would become the first Intercontinental Champion to win the Rumble. Morrison walked up and dared him to say something to his face. He mocked him in his bad Scottish accent and Drew said it was time for Morrison to move on. Morrison said somebody was going to lose their temper, and if it wasn't going to be Drew, it would be him. He bitch slapped Drew and they rolled around on the ground as agents and refs tried to break them up...

Shore’s Slant: OK, I'm diggin the mic time. They weren't given a lot to work with here, but I like that Morrison was more intense than silly, and his silly was meant to piss Drew off, not punk him. Both need more time to clean up there styles, but it's a good start.

Back from commercial, Rey Mysterio made his ring entrance. Batista made his spotlight entrance...

5. Rey Mysterio fought Batista to an apparent no contest in a Number One Contender match at 11:06. Rey went to the floor immediately and Batista chased. Rey got the better at first, but Batista slammed him into the corner and worked power moves and strikes. Rey escaped and tried for a hurricanranna, but Batista caught him. Rey punched out and finally hit it for a 619 setup. Batista slipped to the floor before Rey could hit it and Rey dove on him. Batista caught him and slammed him into the ring post. Rey recovered into the break...[C]

Back at 5:40, the two men battled on the top rope. Rey knocked Batista to the floor and went for a frog splash. Batista twist to get a shoulder up and both men sold the move. A video showed Batista working the back on the floor during the break. Rey hit a springboard dive, and Batista caught him for a spine buster. Batista followed with a spear and stomped the mat. He set Rey up and Hell's Bells tolled as the lights went out. The lights came up and Batista was laid out, holding his head.

Rey attacked and hit a drop kick and a tilt a whirl DDT. He hit the drop toe hold and 619. He stood on the apron and Hell's Bells tolled again as the lights went out. The lights came up and both men were out in the ring. Hell's Bells tolled again and the Undertaker's entrance, complete with smoke and everything, played, but the Taker did not come out. Grisham said, “The Dead Man's presence was felt here tonight,” to end the show...

Shore’s Slant: WTF was that? Our correspondent said that Rey won if you saw the spoilers, so WTF? That was so overbooked and awful. The match was OK but the ending just killed it. And to end like that, with no resolution was super weak. Vickie came out and made a decision last week, why not now? Poor ending to a pretty good show. I'll have plenty to say tomorrow for the hitlist. Thanks for reading and I'll see you then.
