Jan 1, 2010 - 07:00 PM

Smackdown on MyNetwork TV

[Q1]A video package recapped the Mysterio win over Batista two weeks agao, and his match with Taker last week...The opening video aired, followed by the pyro, and Todd Grisham and Matt Striker wished us Happy New Year and welcomed us to Smackdown. They hyped the Beat the Clock challenge and the IC match...

Shore’s Slant: And a Happy New Year from all of us here at DotNet. May you lose the 20 pounds you resolved to.

CM Punk's music hit and he and Luke Gallows made their ring entrance. He asked how many people had made and broke New Year's resolutions. He picked on a fat guy and asked how many said they would stop drinking. He said New Year's resolutions were about making yourself better and that's why he never made one, he was already better. He said they were going to make a pledge. He had the crowd raise their hands.

He said, “I, state your name.” The crowd said, I, state your name.” Hilarious. He had them swear to embrace the straight edge lifestyle. The crowd booed him. He told them not to make him beat it into them. He said he would beat up the arena if that's what it took. He said he would save one lost soul from the crowd next week. He said he would do it city by city until there was one straight edge society. He said he would win the Beat the Clock challenge and destroy the Undertaker. Matt Hardy made his ring entrance to Jeff's heat...[C]

Shore’s Slant: Dear God, remind me again why this guy is not in the main event. He is so money on the mic. He gives the same promo every week. The exact same on. And yet it never gets old. He has changed it up enough every time it starts to lag. Can we please get him and Morrison in the main event to run for a while? For New Years and all?

[Q2]1. CM Punk (w/Luke Gallows) defeated Matt Hardy in a Beat the Clock Challenge at 7:20. Hardy hooked an inside cradle for a quick two and then worked the arm. He pinned Punk in the corner and Matt worked the stomach. Striker pointed out this was in reaction to the Slammy attack from Punk. Matt hit a side Russian leg sweep for two and clubbed Punk in the corner. Punk hit a kick to counter and then a neck breaker for two. He slapped on a figure four head lock.

Punk broke the hold and stomped on Hardy. He stood him in the corner and Matt tried to hit the bulldog. Punk pushed him off and hit a big kick for two. Punk worked a side headlock, but Hardy reversed into a back suplex. Hardy hit a flying clothesline for two, and then the bulldog for another two. Hardy hit a Side Effect for another near fall. Hardy tried for Twist of Fate, but Punk made the ropes. He hit a big kick to the head and followed with GTS for the win. Post match, Punk sicked Gallows on Hardy. Hardy tried to fight, but Gallows hit his powerbomb...The announce team hyped Morrison vs. McIntyre and the other Beat the Clock matches...[C]

Shore’s Slant: Same basic match we've seen since Jeff left, but still good. Punk has started to bore me in the ring a little. I wouldn't mind a couple of new moves for him. He's still one of the best on the roster, but a new move or two would do wonders for him. Hardy will never be world champ, but he is always good as the jobber face.

Back from commercial, Kane made his ring entrance. Ziggler was out next...

2. Kane fought Dolph Ziggler to a no contest in a Beat the Clock Challenge. Ziggler and Kane went right at each other and they mat wrestled like amateurs. Kane broke on the ropes and Ziggler hit a drop kick to the knee to take control.

[Q3]Ziggler hit a couple of strikes and Kane hit a clothesline. He held a standing suplex and finally dropped for two. Kane whipped Ziggler and tried for a back drop. Ziggler held on for a DDT for two. Ziggler worked frantic quick strikes and covers. He finally locked on a weird headlock and Kane slammed him off. Ziggler came right back with a shoulder tackle for two. He worked his rolling head lock on the floor.

Kane escaped and hit a big boot for two. He whipped Ziggler to the corner and hit an elbow and the sidewalk slam for two. He hit a running powerslam for two and went to the top. Ziggler caught him on the top and they battled. Kane knocked Ziggler down and hit the clothesline from the top for two with one minute left. He tried for the chokeslam, but Ziggler grabbed the rope and Kane dropped him on it. Ziggler hit a blow to the neck and jumped on Kane's back with a sleeper. Kane went down, but time expired before he tapped. Ziggler hit the Zig Zag post match and screamed at Kane ebfore leaving the ring...[C]

Shore’s Slant: All you folks that say Kane can't wrestle can kiss my ass. Week in and week out he shows what he can do when he's not straddled trying to carry Khali. Put him in the ring with someone who can work and he is money every time. Good match that was better than the opener.

Back from commercial, the Raw Rebound recapped Cena vs. Sheamus...

[Q4]In the ring, some guy was wearing a Carolina Panther's jersey was introduced as the Carolina Panther. The announce team pointed out that my Panthers decided not to suck last week and beat the crap out of the Giants. Khali and Mini-Me made their ring entrance...

3. The Great Khali (w/Ranjin Singh) squashed The Carolina Panther at 0:26. Khali bomb for the win...[C]

Shore’s Slant: Well, at least the other time my Panthers didn't suck this year was when they beat Powell's Vikings so bad Favre had to put Childress in time out.

Back from commercial, John Morrison made his ring entrance. A video package recapped Morrison's challenge and attack on McIntyre on Christmas Eve. McIntyre was out next...[C]

4. Drew McIntyre defeated John Morrison by disqualification to retain the Intercontinental Championship at 4:49. Morrison started out with quick offense and hit a leg lariat for two. McIntyre went to the floor and Morrison followed. He did a back flip onto McIntyre from the rail and rolled him back in the ring. He covered for two near the ropes. McIntyre got Morrison's leg tied up in the ropes and kicked and hit the leg.

[Q5]McIntyre worked the leg, but Morrison hit a insaguri kick and then the Pele kick for two. Morrison hit the Chuck kick for two. He tried for a flying head scissors, but Drew reversed into a back breaker for two. He went to the corner and took the turnbuckle cover off. Morrison attacked in the corner and the ref pulled him off. He yelled at Morrison and turned around to get the cover. McIntyre pushed Morrison into the ref, causing the DQ. Post match, they brawled at ringside and the refs had to break it up...The announce team hyped Punk as having the time to beat...[C]

Shore’s Slant: Good. I like that this feud gets to continue. Both of these guys could come out of here looking like stars if they are given mic time to work. This is the best mid-card feud going right now and it is fun to watch.

Back from commercial, Michelle McCool and Layla joined the announce team, but not on the headsets. McCool had a shirt that said “Piggie James [hearts] Food,” and Layla's said, “We [heart] the Glamazon.” They cheered as Beth made her entrance and booed Mickie...

5. Mickie James defeated Beth Phoenix at 1:00. The match was just getting started when Layla distracted the ref. McCool tried to kick Mickie, but hit Beth instead. Mickie rolled Beth up for the win. Post match, Layla and McCool attacked Mickie. Beth pulled McCool off and tossed her away. She destroyed McCool in the corner as Mickie beat up Layla. Mickie tossed Layla from the ring, and Beth gorilla pressed Michelle, tossed her down, and kicked her from the ring. She slapped Mickie hands as she went to leave and then hit the Glamslam on Mickie before finally leaving...

Shore’s Slant: I'm damn giddy with this angle. Beth looks like a beast, and I care about McCool again. Nice way to turn this division around. Now if we can just get Natty involved.

[Q6][C]Back from commercial, Chris Jericho made his ring entrance. He cut a promo and said Smackdown wasn't big enough for him. He guaranteed he and Show would win and he would go on to be the face of Raw and every other WWE venture. He listed all of them too. He said his goal would be to go on to win every title in the company. He said he beat Rey and the clock and then Taker. He said in 2010 he was going to take his rightful place as the center of the WWE Universe. Mysterio made his entrance...[C]

6. Rey Mysterio defeated Chris Jericho in a Beat the Clock Challenge at 7:19. Jericho started out in control with attacks. He tossed Rey to the floor.

[Q7]CM Punk was shown watching backstage. Mysterio hit a springboard splash out of nowhere for two, but Jericho kicked Rey and went back to work. Rey hit an insaguri kick and tried for 619, but Jericho hit a lucha libre back drop for two and slapped on a sleeper type hold. Rey fought out and hit a drop toe hold into the corner and then a springboard headbutt for two. He hit a springboard crossbody for two. Jericho hit a surprise clothesline to retake control with two minutes left.

Jericho hit his backbreaker for two. Rey hit a dropkick on Jericho's leg to setup 619, but Jericho reversed into Walls of Jericho. Rey squirmed back under and Jericho lifted him up. Rey leg scissored Jericho into a 619 setup and he hit it. He went to the top and Jericho hit the Code Breaker out of the air. He crawled over and covered but Rey kicked out. He argued with the ref and Rey rolled up a small package for the win. Post match, the announce team hyped Batista vs. R-Truth for the final Beat the Clock match...[C]

Shore’s Slant: The match kind of dragged at first, but the ending was super hot and that Code Breaker was sick. I hate the small package finish again for Rey, especially because Jericho isn't Batista. But I guess we are still going with the underdog role no matter who is in the ring.

Back from commercial, Rey sat at ringside. R-Truth made his lame ass entrance. Batista was out next...

[Q8][C]7. R-Truth fought Batista to a no contest in a Beat the Clock Challenge. They locked up and Batista broke dirty. He worked Truth and taunted Rey. Truth managed to get in a couple of blows, but Batista hit a big clothesline. Truth did his cartwheel escape and split ducked for a clothesline. Batista stopped and kicked Truth in the face. He setup the Batista bomb, but Truth punched out and drop kicked Batista to the floor. He hit a plancha and rolled Batista in the ring.

Batista caught Truth coming and the ring and tossed him back to the floor. He drove him into the steps and the ring post. He rolled Truth back in and worked arrogant strikes. Truth tried to come back, but Batista leveled him again. Truth reversed the spear into a DDT for two. Truth hit a spinning axe kick for two. He tried for a missile dropkick, but Batista slapped him out of the air with one minute left. He taunted Rey and hit a spinebuster. He hit the Batista bomb and covered. Rey pulled the ref from the ring before the three count and the clock expired.

Rey ran up the ramp and he was announced as the Beat the Clock winner. He made belt signs as Batista looked on pissed. A video recapped the end of the match. Vickie Guerrero came out and did her “Excuse me,” schtick. She said he cheated Batista and announced it will be Rey Mysterio vs. Batista next week to determine the number one contender...

Shore’s Slant: The match was about what I expected, except I didn't expect Dave to bury Truth. The only time he lost control in the match was when he was acting a fool to tease Rey. Otherwise he was beating Truth like a fool. I liked the end and I hope Rey wins next week. Yes, I'm the eternal optimist. I'll have more to say tomorrow with the hitlist. Thanks for reading and I'll see you then.
