11/17 Shore's WWE "ECW on SyFy" Live Coverage: Vance Archer, Christian and R-Truth vs. C.M. Punk and William Regal, and Hurricane vs. Paul Burchill in a mask vs. career match
Nov 17, 2009 - 09:00 PM

ECW on SyFy
Taped earlier in Philadelphia, Pa.

[Q1]The show opened backstage with CM Punk. He cut a promo about his return to the place he first won the ECW title. He said during his entrance, it will be the longest standing ovation in history…

Shore’s Slant: Looks like Twill got his herpes from Paris Hilton. It’s always fun to be with you guys. Thanks for watching along with me tonight.

The opening video aired, followed by the pyro, and Josh Matthews and Byron Saxton welcomed us to ECW. They hyped the tag team main event as a Survivor Series Preview match…dammit…Zack Ryder and Rosa Mendes made their entrance. He introduced himself and then said he wasn’t there to talk about him. He introduced Rosa. He said his life had changed since they started hanging out. Some guy yelled, “Hey Ryder, you are not the father.” Funny. He said he wanted Rosa in his corner again when he challenged Benjamin again. Rosa compared Ryder losing last week to buying boots. Wait…what?

Benjamin made his entrance, cutting Rosa off. He got a mic and said he accepted Ryder’s challenge. He said instead of Rosa being in the corner, Ryder should sit in the corner and he would wrestle Rosa. Ryder told him not to disrespect his girl. Benjamin said Ryder was a tool, but he should change his name to Black and Decker because he was now a power tool. Rosa distracted Benjamin and Ryder got in a cheap shot. He and Rosa fled to the hills…The announce team hyped Hurricane vs. Burchill for next and then set up a video that hyped the match as well…[C]

Shore’s Slant: This match better be hot, because that opening killed the live crowd. Rosa was stupid and I won’t rehash my feelings on Ryder again. Benjamin proved yet again why he doesn’t get the push his in ring skills call for. Not all of that was his fault though. Black and Decker? Who the hell writes that?

Back from commercial, I got my first look at the new ring announcer as she explained the rules of the match. Nice.

[Q2]The Burchills made their entrance. The Hurricane made his ring entrance…

1. Hurricane defeated Paul Burchill (w/Katie Lea) at 12:57. The Burchills must leave ECW. The match started with a quick one count on each man. They went to lock up again and Hurricane hit a punch to take control. He worked the arm and Burchill got a rope break. He rolled to the floor and consulted with Katie Lea and climbed back in. Hurricane hit a flying head scissors that spilled Burchill to the floor, and followed with suicide dive on the floor. He rolled Burchill back in and covered for two. Hurricane hit the rope and Katie Lea grabbed his leg. He turned and looked at her and Burchill hit a belly to back suplex. Both men recovered into the break…[C]

Back at 6:17, Burchill had a chin lock on Hurricane. A video replayed the belly to back which did look scary with Helms neck history. Hurricane fought out, but Burchill hit a big clothesline for two. Burchill went back to a chin lock. Hurricane fought out again, and again was clotheslined for two. Burchill whipped Hurricane to the corner and charged in. Hurricane moved and Burchill hit the buckle.

They traded blows and Hurricane took control with a flying clothesline for two. He set up for Eye of the Hurricane, but Burchill hit a back flip kick for two. Wow. Somehow, Hurricane set up his finisher again, and Burchill reversed with a Northern Lights Suplex. He begged for Katie Lea to help him. Hurricane came back and hit a flying leg scissors. Katie Lea distracted him and Burchill clubbed Hurricane from behind.

Burchill hit his finisher and Hurricane kicked out. He set up for it again and Hurricane reversed into Eye of the Hurricane, but Burchill kicked out. Hurricane slowly went to the top. Burchill ran up and they battled. Burchill tried for a superplex, but Hurricane reversed it into a neck breaker form the top for the win. Post match, Hurricane celebrated up the ramp. When his music quit, the Burchills sat in the ring and cried…

[Q3]Backstage, Tiffany was shown watching the Burchills. CM Punk came in and asked Tiffany if she knew what straight edge meant. She said yes and he said he heard that she liked to drink. She said she wasn’t a stuck up prude. She said she liked to kick back and have fun. She said Punk should try being a human and walked off. Punk looked at her like she was crazy…

Shore’s Slant: Yeah, that made up for the opening segment. Really good match that surprised me a little. I know it’s PG, but I thought Hurricane was losing the mask. After that performance, I hope Burchill is on his way to Smackdown. Tiffany is such a bad promo. Even Punk couldn’t carry her here. And please don’t let this turn into a Punk breaking straight edge angle. Please, oh please.

Back from commercial Vance Archer made his ring entrance. The jobber was already in the ring…

2. Vance Archer squashed Johnny Andrews at 1:04. Same old squash match. Archer hit his reverse DDT for the win…The announce team ran down the Survivor Series card…

Backstage, Christian was getting ready for his match. Punk came up and started talking about how he used to be ECW Champion. Christian asked Punk if he was allowed to hold hands with girls if he was straight edge. Punk said to show him some respect as a former champion. He ran down all his titles and Christian stopped him. Christian said that was the problem, Punk was a champion and he is a champion…[C]

Shore’s Slant: Vance Archer had a match. That was a silly segment. There was even a part where Christian kept calliong Punk a nerd and nerd argued like a little kid. Still, the thought of these two going in the ring is exciting. Too bad Truth and Regal have to be there.

[Q4]Back from commercial, a video recapped various WWE events at MSG and finished with a recap of last nights show…Back ringside, CM Punk made his ring entrance. There was very little heat. I don’t know if that was a sarcastic response to his opening comments or if Truth has managed to suck all the heat off of him. Regal was out next without the goons. Christian was out next and Truth closed with his lame ass entrance…

3. CM Punk and William Regal defeated Christian and R-Truth at 10:59. Christian and Punk started. Punk pushed Christian and Christian slapped him. Christian pulled William Regal in the ring and whipped him into Regal. He tagged in Truth and they each hit missile dropkicks on their current feuds. The faces celebrated in the ring into the break…[C]

Back at 4:52, Truth hit a flying head scissors on Regal. Regal got the tag and Punk ran in. Truth split ducked and hit the leg lariat on Punk that spilled Punk to the floor. Regal check on him and Truth hit a baseball slide on him. He then dove on Punk. Truth rolled Punk in the ring and Regal attacked Truth from behind, hurting his leg.

[Overrun]Truth slowly climbed in the ring and Punk covered for two. He tagged in Regal who worked the leg. He hit several strikes and rest holds and tagged in Punk. He slammed Truth but missed a leg drop. Truth teased the tag and Punk tagged in Regal who made the save. Regal continued to work the leg, but Truth hit an insaguri.

Double hot tags, and Christian worked his offense on Punk. He hit a tornado DDT for two and then leveled Regal. Christian teased Kill Switch, but Punk pushed out and hit the knee in the corner. He went for the bulldog, but Christian reversed into a reverse DDT. He covered and Regal made the save. Truth fought off Regal, but his leg gave out. The ref checked on him and Christian turned Punk for Kill Switch. Regal hit the Knee Trembler before Christian could drop, and Punk hit GTS for the win. Post match, the heels celebrated over the faces to end the show…

Shore’s Slant: Rich picked a bad week to miss. Solid match to close the show. It didn’t make me want to buy the PPV, but it was a good match. ECW doesn’t have a lot going on for one of the “Big Four.” That’s rough. After the Ryder fiasco, this was a good show. Sorry for forgetting that Ryder punched Benjamin. The power tool line threw me off my game. Thanks for reading and I’ll see you Thursday for Superstars.
