11/5 Shore's WWE Superstars Live Coverage: Chavo Guerrero vs. Santino Marella, Jack Swagger vs. Primo, Tyler Reks vs. Paul Burchill, and Chris Jericho vs. Finlay
Nov 5, 2009 - 07:00 PM

Superstars on WGN America
Taped in Worcester, Mass. and Providence R.I.

[Q1] The opening video aired, followed by the pyro, and Michael Cole and Jerry “The King” Lawler welcomed us to Superstars…Santino made his ring entrance, followed by Chavo…

1. Santino Marella defeated Chavo Guerrero at 5:08. Santino teased the cobra and Chavo slapped him. Santino hit some arm drags and teased the cobra again. Chavo kicked Santino and they traded moves. Chavo caught Santino in the mouth and choked him on the ropes. He hit a sloppy belly to belly for two. Santino reversed a whip into a backslide for two and Chavo hit a dropkick for two out of the kick out. Chavo had a headlock for a moment, but Santino fought out. Chavo beat him back down and then slapped Santino in the mouth before going back to the chin lock.

Santino appeared to be out. The ref dropped his hand twice, but Santino hulked up on the third. He hit several strikes and then the cobra struck. He split ducked a clothesline and hit one of his own…but missed the elbow drop. Chavo started to go to the top, but realized Santino wasn’t in the right spot. He went to drag Santino, but Santino reversed into a small package for the win. Post match, Santino celebrated ringside…

The Ask a Divas segment aired…[C]

Shore’s Slant: Let me explain something quickly. I was raised in the south on Jim Crockett Promotions, the territory that went on to become WCW. So I want rasslin as Vince calls it. That being said, I have never been a fan of the comedic wrestler character. I want to see serious in ring work. So in that respect, I hated what I just saw. But it was funny, it a silly sort of way. I just wish a real worker like Chavo had a better spot on the roster (not a liver spot…)

Back from commercial, Jack Swagger made his ring entrance. Primo was out next. Oh goody, Old King and Cole again…

[Q2]2. Jack Swagger defeated Primo at 3:47. Cole tried to sell these two as having a rivalry. Primo managed to push Swagger down and hit a head but to the back for one. Primo hit a sloppy flying leg scissors and then went for a monkey flip. Swagger caught him and drove him into the corner. Swagger worked his offense and locked in an adapted abdominal stretch. Swagger broke the hold and hit a belly to belly and then did push ups.

Swagger lifted Primo and went to drive him to the corner, but Primo slipped out into a sunset flip for two. Primo hit a chop from the top and then a cross body for two. Primo ran the ropes and tried for a flying head scissors again, but Swagger reversed it into the gut wrench power bomb for the win…The announce team introed the Raw Rebound video that recapped Ozzy’s hosting of Raw…Chris Jericho was shown backstage warming up for his match…[C]

Shore’s Slant: We played this game last week and I guess we will play it again. Swagger’s promise not to lose again, and then beating Primo, is not exactly impressive. Primo has been off TV forever and this does nothing to help Swagger (who should have stayed on ECW the way they’re pushing him on Raw). Both matches have also been sloppy with several moves. I hope Superstars doesn’t become the phone in show Thunder was.

Back from commercial, Paul Burchill made his entrance as Josh Matthews and Byron Saxton took over on the headsets. Tyler Reks came out to some real cheers. Wow, good for him…

3. Paul Burchill (w/Katie Lea) defeated Tyler Reks at 2:43. They locked up and Burchill pushed Reks. Reks hit him and locked in a headlock. Burchill pushed off and Reks hit a shoulder block for one. Burchill swept the leg and took control. He worked his brawler offense and choked Reks on the ropes. Katie Lea slapped him and Reks lunged for her. Burchill caught him from behind and hit a neck breaker in two. Burchill whipped Reks to the corner and ran in. Reks hit an elbow and then a reverse suplex for two.

[Q3]Somewhere in all that, Reks was busted open the hard way. The ref checked on him and Burchill recovered. Burchill hit the Dangerbuster for the win. Post match, the Burchills celebrated in the ring…The announce team hyped the main event…[C]

Shore’s Slant: I hope that match ended early due to Reks being busted open. If it was booked for 2:45, what a disservice they are doing to these wrestlers. Let me back track and point out something I missed on the ECW hit list. I did think the Hurricane/Burchill promo segment was well done…even if I am not a fan of Hurricane for the reason’s listed above. Now if we can just get Paul and Katie Lea over to Smackdown. She would add so much to the Divas there and he could try to get over there.

Back from commercial, Todd Grisham and Matt Striker took over on commentary. They introed a Yoshi Tatsu hype video…The announce team put over the Mysterio/Batista angle be the “Great Betrayal.” They introed a video that recapped the feud…Chris Jericho made his ring entrance…[C]

Shore’s Slant: I know this show is not a brand and its purpose is to hype the other shows, but I hate that we have short matches so we can relive Ozzy and the “Great Betrayal.” Powell mentioned in Q&A this week that WWE needs to reestablish Jericho as a singles wrestler. Let’s hope this is the first step.

Back from commercial, Finlay made his ring entrance. A video recapped the Drew McIntyre beating on Finlay from Smackdown last week…

[Q4]4. Chris Jericho defeated Finlay at 13:18. Jericho ran to the floor to start. Some girl was screaming obnoxiously in the crowd. Wow. Jericho got back in the ring and they locked up. Jericho hid in the ropes and had the ref break them. Jericho punched Finlay when he came back, but Finlay struck back and worked his brawling offense. They rolled around on the mat and Jericho locked in a chin lock. Finlay broke it by bending Jericho’s thumb back and he worked strikes on Jericho.

Jericho grabbed the legs out of nowhere and tried for Walls of Jericho. Finlay flipped out and charged at Jericho. Jericho pulled the ropes down and Finlay tumbled to the floor. Jericho went for a plancha, but Finlay pulled the ring apron out and Jericho landed hard. He recovered on the floor into the break…[C]

Back at 7:23, Jericho had on another chin lock. He protected his thumbs this time. A video showed Jericho whipping Finlay to the stairs during the break. Finlay made his feet and punched out. He hit a school boy for two and Jericho hit a running insaguri kick for two. Jericho taunted and slapped Finlay. Finlay fought back for a moment, but Jericho hit a standing drop kick for two. He hit a slingshot under the bottom rope and worked Finlay in the corner.

He charged at Finlay who hit a clothesline for two. Finlay drove him back to the corner, but Jericho slammed him. He hit abut splash for two and locked in a dragon sleeper…which of course protects the thumbs. Finlay fought out, but Jericho whipped him to the corner. He charged in and Finlay moved. Jericho went to the post and Finlay rolled him up for two. Finlay hit several clotheslines, but Jericho grabbed his feet and locked in the Walls of Jericho.

Finlay made the rope and Jericho broke. Finlay completely no sold the move and lifted Jericho for the Celtic Cross. Jericho grabbed the ropes and Finlay dropped him. Jericho hit the Codebreaker for the win. Post match, Jericho celebrated to end the show…

Shore’s Slant: Two veterans bringing a very lackluster show to a good end. This match, like the other three, had some sloppy spots. The Codebreaker was not the best one I have ever seen. But over the 13 minutes we got, it was a solid match that did go a long way to reestablishing Jericho as a singles wrestler. I’ll have more to say tomorrow in the hit list. Thanks for reading and I’ll see you tomorrow for Smackdown.
