11/2 Powell's WWE Raw Live Coverage: Hard rock icon Ozzy Osbourne and wife Sharon Osbourne host the show, more Survivor Series hype
By Jason Powell Nov 2, 2009 - 10:00 PM |
|
WWE Raw on the USA Network
Live from Worcester, Mass.
[Q1] The show opened with a shot of smoke filling the ring. Once it cleared, Ozzy Osbourne was seated on a throne with his wife Sharon Osbourne standing at his side. "Crazy Train" played in the background. Ozzy stood up and welcomed the crowd to Monday Night Raw. He pumped up the crowd and they responded.
Sharon noted that it wasn't the first time Ozzy has been with WWE RAw. They aired clips from WrestleMania 2, and of Ozzy performing live on the show back in May 2007. Back live, Sharon asked Ozzy if he remembered those moments. "No, I absolutely do not," Ozzy responded with a smile on his face.
The Miz interrupted the Osbournes and headed to the ring with the United States Title draped over his shoulder. Miz asked, "Really, is this going to be a crazy night, Sharon, really?" He said he's a bigger fan of Ozzy, Sharon, and their entire family. "Really, little boy," Sharon responded.
Miz said he was robbed in his match with Evan Bourne last week. He demanded that they strike that loss from the record. "Who the bloody hell are you?" Ozzy asked. "Really," Sharon chimed in. Miz got in Ozzy's face and said, "I'm the Miz and I'm awesome." Ozzy shot Miz a crazy look as he delivered his catchphrase.
Cody Rhodes and Ted DiBiase's music interrupted them all. Once they arrived in the ring, Cody complained that they bought Randy Orton a special gift. Ted took the mic and said: "We? You know I paid for most of it." They complained about Kofi Kingston destroying the car and asked to be put in a handicap match against him tonight. Miz said Ozzy and Sharon should deal with him first. "Really?" Sharon mocked.
Big Show's music played and he headed to the ring. Show said they shouldn't listen to the complainers. He said he was insulted by the entire roster last week and demanded an apology. "I'm so sorry," Ozzy said. Show demanded that the entire roster come out and apologize or they'd get "one of these." Show held his fist in Ozzy's face. "Sharon!!!" Ozzy yelled. Sharon and Show started laughing.
The DX theme played. Triple H and Shawn Michaels headed to the ring. Michael Cole and Jerry Lawler noted that Shawn is a huge fan of Ozzy. Triple H took the mic and said that the "four ratings killers" were ruining "seg one." Hunter held up Ozzy's book. Shawn held up the DX book for the big plug spot.
Hunter whispered in Ozzy's ear. Ozzy said Miz would wrestle "Evan Brawn" for the U.S. Title. "Close enough," Hunter said. Shawn plugged WrestleMania 26 tickets go on sale on Saturday morning. Shawn whispered in Sharon's ear. She said it would be Kofi Kingston facing Randy Orton.
Big Show suggested John Cena, Triple H, and Shawn Michaels in a Triple Threat match. Big Show whispered in Ozzy's ear. Ozzy said there would be a Triple Threat match. Hunter whispered in Ozzy's ear. Ozzy announced John Cena vs. Chris Jericho vs. Big Show for later in the show. Sharon announced that all matches are final. She said that if Show wasn't down with that, she had two words for him. The fans filled in the rest... [C]
Powell's POV: Fun opening segment. The whispering lines gimmick was an effective way of keeping Ozzy on track. The live crowd popped big for Ozzy and they were into the matches they announced for later in the show.
[Q2] Highlights aired from last week of The Miz and Jack Swagger flirting with Eve and competing for her attention...
1. The Miz pinned Evan Bourne to retain the U.S. Title in 4:15. Cole stated that The Osbournes informed Miz during the break that his match was coming up next. Lawler stumbled over his words as he tried to say the only way that Miz could lose the title is by pinfall or submission.
Bourne hit the flying knee press over the top rope and onto Miz at ringside early on. Bourne dominated the first three-and-a-half minutes of the match and scored a nice nearfall. He went for the Shooting Star Press at 3:55. Miz moved, but Bourne landed on his feet. Seconds later, Miz hit the Skull Crushing Finale and scored the clean pin...
Powell's POV: Fun opening match. It was nice to see Evan get so much offense. By the way, I wonder if Lawler was being facetious when he stated that Shawn Michaels is a huge Ozzy fan. I'm guessing that might not be the case given Shawn's religious beliefs, but I could be wrong.
[Q3] Lawler hyped the Triple Threat match for later in the show...
Backstage, Josh Matthews interviewed Sheamus. He noted that Sheamus would be facing Jamie Noble coming up next. Sheamus said Ozzy's career should have been over years ago. He said Noble's career would be over after their match...
Powell's POV: Sheamus lightened up the accent this week and didn't sound like the Lucky Charms leprechaun like he did last week.
2. Sheamus defeated Jamie Noble via ref stoppage in 2:25. Lawler told the story that Sheamus wasn't satisfied with the way he beat Noble last week. The match was all Sheamus, who hit a urinage into a backbreaker in a cool move. He had the pin at 2:00, but picked up Noble to punish him more. He continued to beat up Noble until the referee stopped the match.
After the match, Sheamus placed Noble on the top rope and kicked him down to ringside. Sheamus powerbombed Noble on the floor. Noble sold it nicely by looking like he was out of it and then moaning on the floor while the referees hovered over him. Noble was stretchered out while Sheamus backed up the ramp and admired his work... [C]
Powell's POV: Great squash. Sheamus looked vicious and the live crowd responded accordingly. A big upgrade from last week. They replayed the big moves a few times and the announcers spoke in their somber voices to put it over as a serious attack.
Did You Know? WWE was watched by more male viewers than any show on NBC, CW, and FOX?
Powell's POV: More men watch you check the mail than watch CW each week.
The announcers put over the "remorseless" attack by Sheamus, and set up a video that recapped the Kofi Kingston and Randy Orton drama from last week...
[Q4] A shot aired of Kofi Kingston walking backstage. Josh Matthews stopped and asked him if he had any regrets about what he did last week. Kofi said he destroyed Orton's car, but he didn't touch the mirror so that Randy could take a hard look at why he is no longer WWE Champion. "And I don't regret a thing," Kingston said... [C]
Powell's POV: Clunky verbiage, but a nice finishing line. I always feel for Josh because they keep the camera on him after the wrestlers walk away. He just stares at the wrestlers and looks creepy. Can't they just cut away to avoid making him look like such a stalker? It looks bad enough when he just jumps out of the shadows to interview them when they're walking backstage. You know that feeling you get when you're alone and you feel like someone is watching you? It's probably Josh.
During the ring introductions for the next match, Cole actually said one of the sponsors is "Golden Coral Buffer and Grill." There was an awkward silence and Lawler said, "I believe it's buffet and grill."
Powell's POV: That silence was probably filled by Vince McMahon yelling like a lunatic on commentary. Did Cole just misread the ad or is he like Ron Burgundy in that he'll just read whatever comes across the teleprompter?
3. Randy Orton fought Kofi Kingston to a non-finish in 2:00. Kofi controlled the first couple minutes of the match. Cody and Ted ran out to help Randy. Kofi dove onto all of them at ringside. Ozzy and Sharon popped up on the big screen and announced it would be a six-man tag match instead. Mark Henry and MVP came out. Cole said the match was coming up next... [C]
Powell's POV: The crowd was fine with the change, but I was looking forward to Randy vs. Kofi. That said, that match has pay-per-view potential if they build it up properly.
4. Kofi Kingston, MVP, and Mark Henry defeated Randy Orton, Cody Rhodes, and Ted DiBiase. Henry dominated the heels early on with his power. He tagged in MVP, who was immediately taken down by the heels.
[Q5] Later, Randy as going for the RKO on Henry when Kofi cut him off with a nice dropkick. Cody dove onto Henry, who caught him and hit the World's Strongest Slam for the win...
Powell's POV: A fun match that furthered the Orton vs. Kingston feud and pleased the crowd. The fans were hot for the finish.
Cole hyped the three-way. Lawler hyped an upcoming segment called, "Raw's Got Talent" that will be hosted by Ozzy and Sharon...
Powell's POV: I guess this is where they try to recreate the Bob Barker magic. My guess is that the contestants are Chris Jericho, Jillian Hall, and Santino since we haven't seen any of them tonight. It really would be a shame if metal head Jericho didn't get to appear in a segment with Ozzy.
Ozzy and Sharon were seated in at a table set up in the ring. Jerry Lawler introduced special guest just The Great Khali. "He's f---in' tall," Ozzy appeared to say. Khali came out with Runjin Singh, who was wearing an Ozzy shirt. Singh translated Khali saying he has a crush on Kelly Osbourne. Sharon said she'd love to have him as a son-in-law.
Santino was the first contestant. He came out dressed like Ozzy and said he wouldn't sing "Bark at the Moon" because he's not a dog. He said he was going to bite the head off a bat. He pulled out a Batman action figure and bit the head off. He was booed and Sharon said it was "rubbish." Ozzy was smiling.
Chris Masters was up next doing a "performance art piece" to "Crazy Train." Masters came out and posed to Ozzy's hit song. Ozzy cracked up as Masters flexed his pectoral muscles to the beat of the song. Funny and weird all at the same time. "He's gorgeous," Sharon said. Singh said Khali found that strangely mesmerizing.
[Q6] The final contestants were Chavo Guerrero and Jillian Hall doing a duet of "If I Close My Eyes Forever." Ozzy was horrified when Jillian sang the Lita Ford part. Ozzy said he was going to rename the song "If I Close My Ears Forever." Jillian and Chavo came to the ring. Jillian got in Sharon's face and sang. Sharon smacked her.
Chavo said Ozzy needs to control his wife. Ozzy said Chavo should do it because he can't. "Maybe I will," Chavo said. Chavo and Sharon bickered face-to-face. Khali chopped Chavo over the head. Hornswoggle came out dressed like Jack Osbourne and hit the Tadpole Splash on Chavo. Ozzy and Sharon liked him. "Vintage Hornswoggle," said jackass Cole...
Powell's POV: There's your entertainment show clip of the night. I was right on two of the contestants. I'm not patting myself on the back, though. These skits are just predictable and formulaic.
A shot aired of Kelly Kelly walking backstage and then high-fiving The Bellas. They all walked past Gail Kim. Eve walked into the picture and high-fived Gail. Cole hyped the divas battle royal coming up after the break... [C]
Cole announced that boxer Ricky Hatton will be the special guest host of next week's show...
5. Alicia Fox won a six-Diva Battle Royal to earn a shot at the WWE Divas Championship. The contestants were The Bellas, Gail Kim, Kelly Kelly, Eve, and Alicia Fox. A shot aired of Melina watching the match from backstage. Gail was the first woman eliminated. Kelly felt bad because she was trying to eliminate someone else.
Jack Swagger came out and cheered Eve from ringside. Eve eliminated booth Bellas. Alicia tossed Eve. The match came down to Kelly and Alicia. Kelly went for her big elbow in the corner spot, but Alicia caught her and dumped her over the top rope to win the match...
Powell's POV: Yes, Cole did tell us that the Divas are smart, sexy, and powerful before the match.
The announcers recapped the Sheamus pummeling of Jamie Noble. They said they were told that Noble suffered serious back and neck injuries. They said they hope to have more next week...
Powell's POV: WWE is doing a really nice job of making a big fuss over Sheamus attack. It's the exact opposite of what TNA did with their stretcher jobs last week.
[Q7] [C] An ad for ECW hyped Vladimir Kozlov and Ezekiel Jackson vs. Christian and Yoshi Tatsu for Tuesday's show... Did You Know? WWE won the Beacon Award for communications excellence for their Smackdown The Vote campaign? Now you do...
The announcers set up the Smackdown Rebound. Highlights aired from last week's show of Batista and Rey Mysterio. They both asked what the other was thinking. Surprisingly, neither one of them was thinking Arbys...
Backstage, Chris Jericho got his moment with Ozzy and Sharon. He said he's the best in the world and one of the reasons is Ozzy. He said he was a huge fan of Osbourne while growing up and did a nice impersonation of Ozzy. Jericho said he realized that he doesn't need the fans. He said he's better than Ozzy. "I really don't think so," Ozzy said. Sharon mocked Jericho. After Jericho walked away, Ozzy mentioned that he's been dealing with crazy people...
Backstage, Shawn and Hunter had Hornswoggle hung up. They said he'd be in trouble if he impersonated DX. John Cena entered the picture and said you can't hang a leprechaun on a hook. Hornswoggle did the chop and left the scene. Hunter said he's not really sweating the Triple Threat too much because he beat him two weeks ago. Shawn said they're in England next week where he beat Cena.
Cena said they beat each other all the time. The camera pulled back and showed the Bella Twins looking freaked out by Cena's comment. "That didn't come out right," Cena said. Cena said anything can happen in a Triple Threat match. He said he won't have two words for DX at Survivor Series. He said he'll have four words for them. "The Champ is here!" Cena said in a overly jolly manner... [C]
Powell's POV: That made me want to watch next week's show just in case they give us a rematch with Cena vs. Shawn, but it did not make me want to order the Survivor Series.
[Q8] Highlights aired from last week of the Raw wrestlers ganging up on Big Show... Back live, Triple H was standing on the desk doing the crotch chop. Hunter was responding to something Cole said and trying to get off the desk at the same time when he headsets fell off his head in mid-sentence. Oops...
Ring introductions for the main event took place. The running gag of the night for Hunter is that Shawn has degrees from obscure colleges around the world. Cole hyped WrestleMania 26 tickets going on sale. Shawn questioned why Cole can do that and no one says anything, but when he does it for his merchandise it's a shameless plug. Cole hyped the Smackdown version of the Triple Threat for Survivor Series. A graphic noted that the match was coming up next... [C]
6. Chris Jericho defeated John Cena and Big Show. The match was joined in progress. Hunter and Shawn clowned around on commentary during the opening minutes of the match while the heels were roughing up on Cena.
Cena made a brief comeback by bulldogging Jericho, only to take a Big Show spear. Show and Jericho bickered. Show dumped Jericho to ringside. Cena went for the Attitude Adjustment on Show, but couldn't handle his weight. Show followed up with a Vader Bomb attempt, but Cena moved.
[Overrun] Show told us we were seeing "Vintage Cena" as he got the better of both heels. He did the "You Can't See Me" routine. "Where did he go," Hunter mocked. "I can't see him. Cena picked up Jericho for the Attitude Adjustment, but Show reached in and knocked out Cena with a big punch. Jericho fell onto Cena and got the pin.
After the match, the heels continued to double team Cena. DX hit the ring, but Show took out HBK with a punch and then headbutted Triple H into Jericho's Codebreaker. Show and Jericho stood over the three fallen babyfaces to close the show...
Powell's POV: A logical finish given that they had to make Jericho and Show look strong heading into their Triple Threat match with Undertaker at Survivor Series. The Osbournes were fun at times, but this was a forgettable show for the most part. They have a lot of work to do to get people excited about the Survivor Series over the next couple weeks. I'll have more to say about it on Tuesday in my audio recap and in the WWE Raw Hitlist. Thanks for watching along with me tonight.
