10/19 Powell's WWE Raw Live Coverage: Triple H vs. John Cena in what could be Cena's last match on Raw, Snoop Dogg as guest host, final hype for WWE Bragging Rights pay-per-view
Oct 19, 2009 - 08:00 PM

WWE Raw on the USA Network
Live from Jacksonville, Fla.

[Q1] Ring announcer Justin Roberts introduced Snoop Dogg, who received a nice pop from the live crowd. He rolled into the building in a pink car with The Bella Twins and Eve Torres. They all headed to the ring. "I do know that Raw is going to embarrass the hell out of Smackdown," he said regarding their Bragging Rights pay-per-view.

Snoop hyped John Cena vs. Triple H, Randy Orton vs. Ted DiBiase, and Chris Jericho vs. Shawn Michaels. The crowd popped for all three matches. Snoop hyped the crowd a little and then told them to make some noise for DX.

Powell's POV: Damn, loaded lineup tonight. The Raw lineup for tonight is better than the pay-per-view lineup.

Shawn Michaels and Triple H came to the ring to their usual entrance while Snoop and the ladies grooved to their music in the ring. DX and Snoop were in the ring together briefly. Snoop cleared out and headed backstage with the women. "Ladies and gentlemen, Snoop Dogg!" Hunter said. He said that whenever Snoop is on a show, white guys are required to speak in the Snoop Dogg language. Michael Cole had already been there and done that.

Hunter had Shawn talk in Snoop-speak. Hunter laughed harder than the live crowd. They high-fived like dorks. They turned their attention to the seven members of Team Smackdown as a shot of the group aired on the big screen. They ran through the team and cracked jokes.

Hunter said Cryme Tyme can be found at Smackdown selling tickets in the parking lot. Hunter said he has no idea who Drew McIntyre and Eric Escobar are. Shawn said McIntyre is a future champion. Shawn said he also doesn't know who Escobar is. They joked about him sleeping with Vickie Guerrero.

DX introduced Team Raw. Big Show, Mark Henry, Kofi Kingston, Jack Swagger, and Cody Rhodes came to the ring. They slighted Cody by not talking about him. He took the mic and said he might not tag anyone into the match and might beat Smackdown by himself.

Big Show stepped up. He said he doesn't care if Cody insults DX, "but you will respect me." Show said he'll take out anyone he feels is going to let down the team. He said that goes for everyone on the team. Mark Henry stepped up and asked if that was a threat. "What if it is?" Show asked. Henry said they might have a problem.

[Q2] Jack Swagger stepped in and put himself over. He said they should sit back and let a two-time All American wrestler do the real work. Kofi took the mic and said the bickering is exactly what Smackdown wants.

Triple H took the mic and said he has a problem. "Aren't you supposed to be Jamaican?" Hunter asked. "What happened to your accent." Kofi gave him a surprised look. Shawn quickly shifted their focus to the tag match. Hunter said that if any of them lose in the upcoming match it will prove that they're the weakest link and the person who beats them will take their place. He said the match would take place now.

MVP, Evan Bourne, Primo, Chris Masters, and Chavo Guerrero game out... [C]

Powell's POV: Snoop was cool as could be. The Bellas look like celebrity whores by hanging all over the celebrities each week. DX made it clear they are cooler than the Smackdown team and their own team. They only people they put over other than themselves were Snoop and Kofi. Shawn told Kofi he could fight on his team any day...and then made him prove himself in the tag match.

1. Big Show, Mark Henry, Cody Rhodes, Jack Swagger, and Kofi Kingston defeated MVP, Evan Bourne, Chris Masters, and Chavo Guerrero in 2:56. The announcers recapped the match stipulation. They showed Hunter and Shawn watching the match on a backstage monitor. The challengers all wore black Bragging Rights t-shirts.

Jerry Lawler noted that he'll be on Smackdown on Friday. Late in the match, Cody hit CrossRhodes on Primo. However, Swagger tagged himself into the match and pinned Primo. Cody wasn't pleased. A fight broke out amongst Team Raw. It came down to Show and Henry. Show took out Henry and then left the ring as a shot aired of DX shaking their heads while watching on the monitor...

Powell's POV: Man, I just don't care about that tag match. It's not like DX helped matters by mocking just about everyone involved. It sounds like Lawler will be filling in for Todd Grisham on Smackdown this week. In case you missed the news, Grisham was married over the weekend and is on his honeymoon this week. Oddly enough, no one is questioning whether he's jumping to TNA.

Backstage, Josh Matthews interviewed Ted DiBiase, who said he didn't do anything last week that Randy Orton wouldn't have done himself. He said he took advantage of an opportunity to win a match. Ted said Randy hasn't returned any of his calls, "but he has to understand..." Orton walked into the picture and asked what he should understand.

Ted said Randy would have done the same thing to him. Orton said that if he were DiBiase, he would listen carefully. He said they were supposed to have a match in a few minutes, but they're not going to. Orton said DiBiase was not allowed to lift a finger. "You are going to show me the respect that I deserve," Orton said. Randy said he might not throw Ted out of Legacy if he complied. He said DiBiase would regret it if he didn't obey...

Powell's POV: Damn good segment with Orton and DiBiase with a great hook heading into the commercial break.

[Q3] [C] 2. Randy Orton defeated Ted DiBiase in 4:30. Randy and Ted met in mid-ring and looked at one another. Randy backed up and kicked Ted in the gut. Ted looked pissed, but he didn't fight back. He stood up and looked at Randy, who nailed him with an uppercut forearm. Ted looked even more frustrated, but he didn't fight back again.

This went on for a while and the tension continued to build and the fans were begging for Ted to strike back. Finally, DiBiase pushed Orton to the ground and the crowd popped. Ted expressed great frustration on his face, but he didn't follow up.

Randy stood up and glared at Ted until the frustration slowly disappeared from his face and DiBiase just stared at the ground. Randy tilted up DiBiase's chin (think Macho Man and Elizabeth back in the day) and RKO'd him. Orton pinned DiBiase to win the match. Cole immediately shifted the attention to how John Cena won't back down on Sunday during the Iron Man match...

Powell's POV: Awesome segment. This made Randy look like a total prick and made the fans want to cheer DiBiase. No variety hour bullshit. Just a good wrestling angle with legitimate heat that is so hard to generate in the modern era. I hated the way they immediately shifted the focus to Sunday's pay-per-view. I guess they felt like they had to since they're running out of time. I'm guessing the tension between Randy and Ted plays a part in the finish on Sunday because they could have saved this angle for next week if that were not the plan.

Cole and Lawler noted the passing of Captain Lou Albano and introduced a video that recapped his WWE career... [C]

Powell's POV: Nice video. The crowd politely applauded afterward.

[Q4] The announcers pointed out a group of Jacksonville Jaguars players sitting in the front row. The crowd cheered for some reason... A sneak peak aired from Snoop Dogg's new video...

Backstage, Eve and celebrity whores The Bella Twins flirted with Snoop on a couch. Hornswoggle entered the picture and made a bunch of grunting noise. Chavo Guerrero talked smack to Horny, who responded by doing the DX chop before making a bunch of noise and storming off. Chavo said he wanted a spot on Team Raw.

Jillian Hall showed up and said she wanted a Diva's Title rematch. She sang "Gin and Juice." Santino Marella showed up dressed like Charlie Brown. He said he was dressed up like Snoop's friend because they got off to a bad start at WrestleMania. He kicked out all the comedy clowns from his office.

Snoop had Eve get his lighter. A "technical difficulties" graphic appeared on the screen. It featured a horrible shot of Michael Cole with his arm wrapped around Horny. When they came back, the room was smoky. They pulled the camera back to show candles. Snoop ran through the various scents and said his favorite is "French Cut Grass." Santino showed up and said, "Good grief"...

Powell's POV: I'd bet a "French Cut Grass" stash that we have Brian Gewirtz to thank for that skit. Pot jokes on a PG show? I'm not offended, but I'm sure some parents would be. By the way, I'm having some legit technical difficulties with a problematic television. I've never been more thankful for DVR.

Back at ringside, Cole had his arm around Lawler to mock the cheesy graphic. They hyped the possibility of John Cena wrestling his last match on Raw. A shot aired of a concerned looking Cena... [C]

Did You Know? Over 100 million Diva photos were viewed on the WWE website?...

Powell's POV: Wait, they have over 100 million Diva photos on the WWE website?

John Cena came to the ring. He acted super tense. He kissed the dog tags. He listened to the live crowd's mixed reaction and then passed the phony tags to the referee. Triple H made his ring entrance...

[Q5] 3. Triple H pinned John Cena in 20:20. Cole reminded viewers that this could be Cena's final match on Raw. "This could be a WrestleMania main event and we have it tonight on Monday Night Raw," Cole said. They match started slowly. The women and kids yelled for Cena as Hunter worked him over by whipping him into the turnbuckle a couple times. Cena sold right hip pain. Hunter set up for an early Pedigree, but Cena fought out of it and whipped Hunter into the corner and over the top rope. [C]

After the break, Hunter was back in control of the match, which meant a punch of punches, kicks, stomps, and shoulder blocks in the corner. Lawler told us how grueling the match was even though they were working at a snail's pace at this point. Cena and Hunter traded punches in the ring and were clearly looking to gauge the live crowd, but they didn't get the "yeah" and boo" calls like they did last time.

Cena went for the Attitude Adjustment, but Hunter slipped out and clipped the back of Cena's leg. Hunter went for the leg, cut Cena moved and went for the STF. Hunter quickly reached the ropes to break it. They picked up the pace as Cena went for a bulldog, but Hunter threw him off. Hunter went for the Pedigree again, but Cena slipped out and applied the STF.

Hunter raised his hand and eventually got close to the ropes. Cena pulled him back in the middle of the ring, but Hunter reached the ropes to break the hold. Hunter came right back with a Pedigree and went for a cover, but Cena put his foot over the ropes to stop the referee's count. Cole said they were in the middle of a classic as the show went to break.

[Q6] [C] Back from the break, they aired shots of Hunter whipping Cena into the ring steps. Back live, Hunter locked Cena in the Sharpshooter. A shot aired of Randy Ortonw watching the match on a backstage monitor. Cena teased tapping, but eventually reached the ropes. He came right back with a couple of shoulder blocks and then looked to the crowd.

Cena did the "You Can't See Me" bit over Hunter and then hit the Five Knuckle Shuffle. He went for the Attitude Adjustment, but Hunter slipped out and hit a couple of punches and then a high knee. "Vintage Triple H!" Cole said. Ugh. Hunter hit the spinebuster and followed up with a Pedisgree in the middle of the ring. Cena kicked out at two. "Oh my God!" Lawler said.

Cena stood up a few second later and hit the Attitude Adjustment, but Triple H kicked out. The crowd was loving all the near falls. Cena went for a top rope leg drop and missed. Still, he came right back with an Attitude Adjustment attempt. Hunter avoided it and hit the Pedigree for the third time and scored the clean pin.

After the match, Hunter offered his hand to Cena, who stood up and shook it. Cena looked dejected as Hunter left the ring. Cena saluted the crowd with a somber look on his face to sell the possibility that this could be his final appearance on Raw. "Thanks, John," Lawler said in a somber voice. Cena stopped when he got to the top of the ramp, listened to the crowd, and then raised his hands for one last pop...

The announcers hyped Chris Jericho vs. Shawn Michaels... [C]

Powell's POV: The live crowd loved it and the match built nicely from the slow start into the back and forth finish. I hate to rain on the parade, but it seemed odd that they didn't sell their finishers more more than a couple seconds. Cena would take a Pedigree and come right back seconds later. It happens a lot these days, but I'm surprised to see Hunter not pay more attention to this given his old school approach. This was a good match, but it didn't feel like a classic. I don't think people will be talking about this match weeks from now let alone years from now. That said, I was pleasantly surprised to see a clean finish.

Highlights aired from Friday's Smackdown of The Dirt Sheet with The Miz telling John Morrison that he's the Marty Jannetty of the two...

[Q7] The Miz came to the ring as the announcers hyped his match with Morrison for the pay-per-view. Cole said they have to cheer for Miz on Sunday because he's a Raw wrestler. The Miz was supposed to wrestle a scrawny guy who was billed as being from Minneapolis. However, Snoop appeared on the big screen and said he didn't like the way Miz was talking about Jannetty, so he brought him in to face Miz. Snoop said it was just business...

Powell's POV: I haven't kept up with Snoop's catchphrases lately, but this is the second time he's said it was just business. Is that just a catchphrase or is he setting up a turn?

4. The Miz pinned Marty Jannetty in 2:40. Not much of a reaction for Marty when he came out, but there was a "Marty" chant in the first minute of the match. Lawler said it would be great if Jannetty could upset Miz. He didn't exactly sound enthused when he made that comment.

Cole said it's possible that 20 years from now Miz will be like Jannetty, and Morrison will be like Michaels. Damn, way to diss Jannetty while he's in the damn ring. Miz nailed Jannetty with an early clothesline. He finished him off with the Skull Crushing Finale...

Powell's POV: There were some fans who were happy to see Jannetty, but most didn't seem to care. He really needed the old Shawn Michaels endorsement.

At ringside, the announcers hyped that WWE Smackdown vs. Raw 2010 is coming out tomorrow. "You can create a Joshinator or even a Colenator," Lawler said. Funny...

A shot aired of Chavo and Jillian talking strategy backstage. Lawler said the Divas Championship would be on the line after the break... [C]

The announcers hyped a Melina, Kelly Kelly, and Gail Kim vs. Michelle McCool, Beth Phoenix, and Natalya for the Bragging Rights pay-per-view. Cole said Jillian would replace Melina in the match if she wins the next match...

5. Melina defeated Jillian Hall (w/Chavo Guerrero) to retain the WWE Divas Championship in 1:00. Cole reminded viewers that this is actually a rematch from the short match that took place last week. Chavo climbed onto the ring apron less than a minute into the match. Hornswoggle came out from underneath the ring dressed as Snoop and stopped him from interfering. Melina hit her finisher for the win.

After the match, Chavo ripped the Snoop outfit off Hornswoggle. Snoop Dogg ran out. Chavo shoved Horny down. Horny got on his knees behind Chavo and then Snoop pushed him down. Chavo got up and took off his shirt. He took a swing at Snoop, who ducked and speared Chavo. Snoop and Horny celebrated. The babyface Divas headed to the ring to celebrate with Snoop. They all danced in the ring. Horny busted out some pretty good moves that popped the live crowd...

[Q8] Cole danced in his seat like a complete jack off. The announcers hyped Jericho vs. HBK for later in the show. They also hyped the new original series "White Collar" for Friday night on USA Network... [C] The announcers hyped the Bragging Rights theme song and introduced a video on the Orton vs. Cena feud... [C]

Powell's POV: A quality video and a nice try, but they'd need need nude photos of Megan Fox on superimposed on their backs to get me excited about seeing them wrestle for an hour on Sunday. It might turn out to be a great match, but it's hard to care about the latest big and final match of their never ending feud.

Next week's WWE Raw hosts are NASCAR drivers Kyle Busch and Joey Logano...

Powell's POV: TNA officials are really jealous right now.

Ring introductions for the main event took place...

[Overrun] Jericho wore a Smackdown shirt. Shawn wore a DX shirt. Cole said no wrestler bleeds "Raw red" more than Shawn MIchaels. Jericho took the mic and cut a promo on Shawn. He bragged about the team he put together that's goal is to embarrass, humiliate, and defeat Team Raw. Jericho said they were going to start now with Shawn.

Cryme Tyme's music played and they came through the crowd. Kane's music played. He came to the ring, as did Drew McIntyre, Dolph Ziggler, and Eric Escobar. Kane did his pyro bit once they were all inside the ring. Jericho started to brag about how his team is all on the same page.

The DX music played and Shawn smirked. Triple H came out. He was followed by the other peasants (Team Raw teammates) who had to walk way behind him. Team Raw entered the ring and had a staredown with Team Smackdown.

Hunter took the mic and congratulated Jericho for doing the impossible. He said that despite all the egos on Team Raw, they can all agree on one thing - they don't like Jericho. He said they don't like him, the team, or the Smackdown show. Hunter said they may have walked onto the Raw show, but they are about to get thrown off it.

"Excuse me!" shrieked Vickie Guerrero. She walked onto the stage wearing a Smackdown t-shirt and received the usual mega-heat reaction from the live crowd. She said Hunter would have to wait until Sunday for his fight. She ordered Team Smackdown to leave the arena. "You suck," the live crowd chanted.

Hunter mocked Jericho and said he should leave like his boss implied before he got in trouble. Hunter said they already are in trouble because Team Raw doesn't work for Vickie Guerrero. Hunter threw a punch at Jericho and then the two teams fought in the ring for 30 seconds and the show went off the air...

Powell's POV: Nice of them to screw us out of the match that many of us were looking forward to most. Great heat for Vickie. They tried hard to sell the Raw vs. Smackdown match. They better hope it worked on the masses more than it worked on me because I couldn't care less about this match. They should have built up the rivalry between the two brands a long time ago if they expected this to be a selling point of the show. I'll have more to say in tonight's audio recap, which is available exclusively to Dot Net Members. Thanks for watching along with me tonight.
