10/16 Hermanstyne's Live WWE Smackdown Coverage: Smackdown Bragging Rights qualifying matches, Eric Escobar makes his debut, The Dirt Sheet returns, Rey Mysterio vs. Batista in the main event
Marvin Hermanstyne Oct 16, 2009 - 07:00 PM |
|
WWE Friday Night Smackdown on MyNetworkTV
Taped in Lexington, KY
[Q1] The show started with a tribute to the late Lou Albano…
Mind of Marv: Rest In Peace Captain Lou…20 years ago when I was a kid I always watched the Super Mario Bros. Super Show which he played Mario…
The opening montage aired and Todd Grisham and Michael Cole were on commentary. Grisham hyped the return of the Dirt Sheet…
Mind of Marv: Its is a couple weeks old, but I have been with Dot Net for over an year now…
Teddy Long hyped Bragging Rights 7 on 7 match and he said that he will ensure that SD prevails as the dominant show. He said he had to make a tough decision to make and he introduced Chris Jericho as the team captain. Jericho got that Kentucky Wildcat heel heat...
He said finally years of incompetence; he made the decision of making him captain. He put himself over and talked about Cena returned. He said when Cena loses at Bragging Rights, he will would return where he started, SD and he said he is the man on SD. He said if Cena wants to return, he has to go though him. He did his usual “I’m the best in what I do” promo…
He said he is responsible of putting together a team that will do what he says and he ripped DX and their paperback book. He ripped the fans for wearing DX gear and said the book was filled with lies. He glanced at the book and ripped it apart. He said what he did to the book is what he will do to DX. Kane came out to a huge pop. Kane said, “His team?” They need to talk and he is the co-captain of Team SD.
Jericho petrified, said of course he was thinking the same thing. He put Kane over and Kane said that Team Raw and DX can go up in flames. Batista and Mysterio is the main event…[C]
Mind of Marv: Weak segment. Jericho can cut a promo, but it gets pretty redundant. As far as Kane putting himself on Team SD, it makes him relevant for a change. But as the night goes along with qualifying matches, I will continue to shake my head at Team SD.
[Q2] They hyped this week’s Raw with Snoop as the guest host and the Triple H/Cena match…
Mind of Marv: Snoop of course makes things good but Cena vs. Hunter Part 22,335? Ugh...
1. Dolph Ziggler defeated Finlay and Mike Knox in a triple threat match to earn a spot on Team Smackdown at Bragging Rights in 6:00. Dolph shook Knox hand and Knox clotheslined him. Finlay knocked Knox out and started to work on Dolph. Finlay worked on both heels and Dolph hit a nice dropkick to Finlay. Dolph hit that jumping elbow on Knox and Finlay got the advantage back. Finlay hit an uppercut and a scoop slam to Dolph for a nearfall.
The heels worked on Finlay in the corner and Knox hit an Electric Chair on Finlay. Dolph hit a crossbody on Finlay for a nearfall. Dolph hit a Rocker Dropper on Knox and Finlay broke up the count. Finlay and Dolph exchanged blows and Finlay worked on the heels again and Knox hit a double crossbody on both guys. Finlay used the shelleigh on Knox and went for the pin, but Dolph pulled Finlay out and covered Knox for the cheap win.
Mind of Marv: Wow, we get a rematch of a triple threat match from weeks ago, damn. This was a forgettable match which did nothing for me. Creative completely pulled the plug on Knox as a bad ass if you ask me. Team SD looks decent so far (allegedly).
[Q3] Did you know, SD has had more episodes that Cheers, The Simpsons and ER?
Mind of Marv: If I had a dollar for every person who really didn’t give a damn about that fact, I would purchase the St. Louis Rams…
2. Cryme Tyme defeated The Hart Dynasty to gain a spot on Team Smackdown at Bragging Rights in 3:30. DH and Shad started the match with the Harts working on Shad’s legs. Teddy Long and Jericho were watching backstage. DH placed Shad in a half figure four to twist his knee. DH then applied an ankle lock on Shad. Shad broke out and tagged JTG. JTG hit some fast offense and worked on both heels. He hit the Mugshot to Kidd in the corner. JTG hit his finisher on Kidd to score the win.
Batista vs. Mysterio is still to come…[C]
Mind of Marv: When will the bleeding stop? I thought this feud was buried and gone, yet we get it again. The Harts are getting buried if you ask me because there is no way Cryme Tyme should be pulling off victories like this. The booking is getting ridiculous when it comes to tag teams in my opinion…
Jericho and McCool was talking and Teddy Long interrupted and said co-captain. Jericho talked about what he needed and can’t count on Morrison to beat the Miz. McCool talked about how she was the best and she can beat any Diva. Mickie James came in and said that she has beaten every Diva on Raw. Beth Phoenix said now that she is on SD; McCool shouldn’t have the title for long. Vince was on his phone and Punk came in and interrupted Vince. He bitched about the Fatal Four Way and said that he should be in a one-on-one match. Vince said he will not cancel the match but he would like to see the submission match. Scott Armstrong will be the referee, Long will be at ringside and it will be next week on SD. Punk thanked him and Vince said he loves to see a good fight. [C]
Mind of Marv: Mickie, McCool and Beth in a triple threat for the Women’s title sounds like Survivor Series if you ask me. Vince and this probation shit will end will he fires Long if Team SD loses and Vickie returns as the GM….I can see that happening.
Q4] Vickie Guerrero came out to some heat and introduced her “boy toy” Eric Escobar who got little to NO heat.
Mind of Marv: How do you be escorted by Vickie and get no heel heat? Something isn’t right here…
3. Eric Escobar (with Vickie Guerrero) pinned Matt Hardy to gain a spot on Team Smackdown at Bragging Rights in 2:40. Matt worked on Escobar with a quick nearfalls. Escobar got the advantage with a clothesline for a nearfall and applied a hammerlock on Matt. Escobar went for an elbow, but Matt countered with a side effect and a elbow. Vickie distracted he referee and Escobar threw Matt into the ring post and upset Matt in a quick match.
Mind of Marv: What the hell? Here’s what I’m looking at: Escobar looks like shit as far as ring talent, yet he gets to be a match at a PPV? That’s crappy if you ask me. Matt Hardy might as well be Smackdown’s resident jobber…
The Dirt Sheet is next…[C]
[Q5] The Dirt sheet begins and The Miz is introduced to some decent heat. Miz and Morrison faces each other at Bragging Rights. Morrison is introduced and the ring is split into two with blue and red stuff.
Mind of Marv: You know what be sweet, if they unified these titles between these two guys…
Morrison ripped The Miz about having a championship and both guys hyped the Bragging Rights PPV. Miz said he was the star of the tag team and throughout history. They talked about numerous pairs of people. Miz put over HBK and ripped Marty Janetty. Miz said he was HBK and Morrison was Janetty. They started to rip each other. He said he is a mix of Pink, Michael Phelps and Mr. Ed…. Miz started to put himself over and Morrison called him husky.
Morrison said Raw is like a cheap version of SNL and everyone should watch him and SD. Miz put himself over and got a ton of heat. Miz said he carried Morrison and he’s awesome. Morrison all he does is run his mouth and challenged Miz. They stared each other down and Miz ran off because crowd chanted “Husky”. Morrison said that what he thought and said see you at Bragging Rights, Janetty…
Mind of Marv: Good but not great segment of the Dirt Sheet. This has potential to be a sleeper match at Bragging Rights. This had to be the best thing so far on this lackluster show…
The main event was hyped again and the McIntyre/R-Truth feud video was shown. These guys face each other next…[C]
[Q6] Taker has a message for Punk later tonight and R-Truth and the wack ass rap.
Mind of Marv: Another deadman snoozer promo and the wackest entrance of the 21st century….
4. Drew McIntyre defeated R-Truth via countout to gain a spot on Team Smackdown in 8:45. Truth started very aggressive on Drew. Truth hit an hiptoss on Drew and slung out on Drew outside of the ring…[C]
The show returned with Drew applying a modified a Cobra Clutch on Truth. Truth tossed Drew outside of the ring and hit him with some blows. Drew took Truth head first and slung him into the ring post. Drew scooped slammed Truth and went for an elbow but Truth countered with a boot to Drew’s face. Truth hit his unorthodox offense and got a nearfall. Drew went for his finisher, but Truth knocked him out of the ring. Drew knocked Truth on his back and Truth got counted out.
Mind of Marv: Damn this was just as boring and forgettable as the PPV match at HIAC a few weeks ago. I hate Team SD because it’s Jericho, Kane and mid-carders against DX and mid-carders. This match is really going to suck and I feel it already. Is this an elimination match? Because if it is, what’s the point of Survivor Series?
Mysterio and Batista were backstage and they put themselves over. Dave said he didn’t feel right and Mysterio asked if he sensed fear and Dave jokingly said no. They talked about being champion and Mysterio said he plans to become world champ. Undertaker’s message is next. [C]
Mind of Marv: Mysterio and Batista segments makes me wonder….
[Q7] The Cena and Orton feud video was shown and the Bragging Rights card was ran down. The Punk and Taker match from Breaking Point was shown…
Mind of Marv: 60 minutes of Orton and Cena will put the most normal person in a coma because all you will see is the 5 Moves of Doom, holds and like 50 botched RKOs.
Taker said that history has a way of repeating itself but not in his yard. He said that Punk, Long and Armstrong decided to tempt their own fates and they should know that once they enter Hell’s Gate, there is no turning back and he will take Punk’s soul. He will give him his last rites…
Taker vs. Punk in submission match is next week with Long at ringside and Scott Armstrong as the referee. [C]
Mind of Marv: Why have a world title match and we can already predict the result of this match? I commend them for advertising a week ahead, but why a predictable match? Man this show has been a headache…
[Q8] Mysterio came out to a huge pop and Batista got a slightly better pop.
Mind of Marv: He’s gets suspended and still gets love from the crowd? They didn’t wanna bury him because those damn masks sells and they want to keep making that money.
5. Rey Mysterio defeated Batista in 9:00. The first minute consisted of both guys playing around….[C]
The show returned with Batista shoving Rey and Rey countered with kicks to Batista’s leg. Rey went for the 619, but Batista moved and speared the shit out of him. Rey rolled out of the ring while getting the ten count. Rey got back in the ring at 9 ½ and Batista went for two nearfalls. Batista did his usual shoulder blocks to Rey in the corner and covered for a nearfall.
Batista applied a bear hug to Rey and Rey tried to come back with a rollup but failed and chop blocked Batista.
Rey hit the 619 on Batista and went for the West Coast Pop but Batista tried to hit the Batista Bomb but Rey countered with a rollup for the weird win. Bothe guys put each other over in the ring. Punk hit the GTS on Rey and ran off. Batista tried to catch him but Punk was long gone. Batista and Rey hugged in the ring to close the show…
Mind of Marv: This match screamed FAIL because it was basically a 9 minute Batista squash which lead to Mysterio looking weak and then he pulled off a cheap win when Batista’s shoulder was clearly up. Does the WWE need replacement referees like the NBA?
Bottom line, this show was bad and receives a “D” for a lackluster effort. The booking and writing is starting to get as bad as Raw and if Cena does come to SD, it will only get worse. The 10th season of SD has produced lackluster or lower shows and that’s not good…
The Smackdown Hitlist available tomorrow and Swami Marv is 6-9 for the season. Stupid Jacksonville got smoked last week and cost $120 betting with the spread…but anyway, Here are my picks for Week 6:
Ravens over Vikings – This has to stop and if you listen to the Behind the Ropes show which Powell was a guest, he didn’t sound confident in his Vikings. Look for Joe Flacco to throw on that suspect pass defense because they won’t be able to run the ball that effectively. Farve will throw some picks and it will be a close game when I’ts all said and done.
Saints over Giants – Another close game against two of the NFC’s best. The Saints defense has really improved and if you play fantasy sports, I would sell high on Eli Manning while his stock is high because he is bound to throw some picks. Look for a pretty decent scoring to shootout game. Saints 32, Giants 28
Redskins over Chiefs: I mean come on, if the Skins blow this game, this team seriously needs to blow up and start over because I don’t remember the last time a team lost to three defeated teams in once season…
Bears over Falcons – Like I keep reiterating to Powell, the Vikings schedule is starting to get tough while the Bears schedule after this week should get easy as hell. I like Matt Ryan and Michael Turner, but looks for Jay Cutler and Matt Forte put up some good numbers which should bring my Bears to Victory!
Send comments, suggestions or concerns at mr.hermanstyne@gmail.com and I will debate anything, WWE or NFL related. Thanks for reading and I’ll see you next week.
