10/2 Shore's WWE Smackdown Live Coverage: 10th Anniversary special, The Rock returns for a promo, huge 8 man tag team match, and the Go Home show for Hell in a Cell
Oct 2, 2009 - 07:00 PM

Smackdown on MyNetwork TV
Taped on 9/29/09 in Boston, Mass.

[Q1]A video recapped several classic Smackdown moments…The NEW opening video aired, followed by the pyro, and Todd Grisham and Jim Ross welcomed us to the 10th Anniversary Smackdown…

Shore’s Slant: The new video is tight, the music is OK.

The announce team hyped the eight man main event and The Rock’s promo…In the ring, the announce team said that the party had already started backstage. A camera shot showed a spread of food and a bar, with Hornswoggle as bartender, and a number of wrestlers…Back ringside, Batista made his ring entrance. A video showed parts of moment 64 from the Smackdown DVD of Batista and Mysterio winning the tag titles from MNM. Kane was out next…

1. Batista defeated Kane at 9:40. Collar and elbow tie up to the corner led to a clean brake from Batista and a strike from Kane. Kane whipped him to the corner and Batista came out with a clothesline for one. He went to the headlock, and Kane hit a back suplex to escape. Kane hit a arm breaker for one and locked in a top hammer lock. Batista made his feet and backed Kane to the rope. He pushed out of the hammer lock and drove Kane over the top rope. Kane looked surprise into the break…[C]

Back at 5:58, Kane had a arm bar on Batista. A video showed Kane hitting a big boot on Batista that spilled him to the floor during the break. Batista made his feet and Kane whipped him. Batista ducked a clothesline attempt and they kicked each other in the face.

[Q2]Batista made his feet first and hit several shoulder tackles on Kane. Kane reversed a whip into the corner and followed with a sidewalk slam for two. Kane hit the clothesline from the top and called for the chokeslam. Batista hit a spinebuster for two. Batista set up for the Batista bomb, but Kane escaped. He pinned Batista in the corner and climbed up for ten punches. Batista picked Kane up and walked out of the corner. He hit the Batista bomb for the win. Post match, a video recapped the end and Batista celebrated…The announce team hyped the tag title match at HIAC…

Backstage, Teddy Long was schmoozing at the party. He walked up to Maria and talked to her. Horny brought her a drink and smacked her on the ass. Michael Cole was standing there and said, “Vintage Hornswoggle!” He offered to get Teddy a drink. Teddy ordered a Diet Pepsi. Finlay came up and ordered Irish whiskey for all of them. Cole said, “Vintage Finlay!” He toasted everyone and they went to drink, but Punk stopped Teddy. Cole: “Vintage Punk!” Punk said no more alcohol while he was champion.

Punk walked off and an, “Excuse me!” floated out. Vickie Guerrero appeared looking well. She pooped on Teddy’s GM run. A guy came up and Teddy asked who he was. She introduced him as her boyfriend. He said his name was Eric Escobar and he was new to Smackdown and Vickie is his manager. Teddy looked upset. Suddenly, a hand clapped his shoulder and Hell’s Bells rang. Teddy turned around and it was Santino dressed as Taker. He said it was a great costume party…The Eddie Guerrero tribute video is next…[C]

Shore’s Slant: A funny thing just happened. That match wasn’t near as bad as I thought it would be. It wasn’t a five star classic, but it didn’t make me sick either. And give the devil his due, that was a hell of a powerbomb. Nice to see Vickie coming back. I’ve never seen Escobar, but I hear he can get it done in the ring and is already a good promo. Of course I hear a lot of crap too so we will see.

Back from commercial, Hornswoggle walked into the VIP area guarded by MVP and Mark Henry. Zack Ryder begged to get in and even bribed them. They let in Matt Hardy, Christian, all the Divas, and Sgt. Slaughter. They said there was room for one more and let in the Iron Sheik. Ryder scream, “You’ll let the sheik in but not me?” Sheik said, “Woo, woo, woo, you know it jabroni.” They all laughed…

[Q3]The Eddie Guerrero tribute video aired…[C]

Shore’s Slant: The backstage stuff is lame right now. I’m not even going to try to tell you about that video, I couldn’t possible do it justice. If you’re reading this, then you should be able to go to WWE.com and find the video and see it for yourself.

A Hell in a Cell commercial hyped the WWE title match…The announce team hyped the special message from The Rock…Jack Swagger joined the announce team. John Morrison came out to a good pop. The announce team hyped his match at HIAC with Dolph Ziggler. Kofi Kingston was out next. Swagger jerked the headset off and threw it down. He just sat there looking at Kofi. Dolph Ziggler was out next, followed by The Miz who drew some good heat…

2. Dolph Ziggler and The Miz defeated John Morrison and Kofi Kingston at 8:31. Miz and Morrison started. Miz talked junk in Morrison’s face. Morrison smiled and they went for a tie up, but Miz kicked him in the stomach to take control. He whipped Morrison who slid under Miz and hit a drop kick that spilled Miz to the floor. Ziggler ran in but bailed when Kofi ran in to help…[C]

[Q4]Back at 3:51, Ziggler worked Kofi in the ring, but Kofi reversed a whip for a slam and a two count. Swagger stood up and Kofi mouthed off to him at the ropes. Ziggler hit a flying hangman over the top rope and rolled in for a quick two. He tagged in Miz who went to work. He hit his clothesline in the corner and a double axe handle from the top for two. He locked in a chin lock. Kofi made his feet, but Miz slammed him and tagged in Ziggler.

Kofi tried to fight away and leveled both men. He almost made the tag, but Ziggler made the save. He locked in a seated chinlock, but Kofi made his feet. Ziggler whipped him to the corner and tagged in Kofi. Miz charged at Kofi, who moved, and hit the post. Double hot tag led to Morrison working quick offense. He hit a leg lariat and the standing shooting star pres for two.

He whipped Dolph to the corner and Miz took a swipe at him. Morrison ducked and Miz dropped to the floor. Kofi ran in and made a diving clothesline off the steps. Morrison went for the chuck kick, but Ziggler pushed him onto the top rope. He followed up with the Zig Zag for the win…

Backstage, Slaughter and Sheik argued USA/Iran. Sheik started to choke on bread and Huricane saved him. Cole was shit-faced with Finlay and Horny. Jericho walked up and gave his sanctimonious speech and Cole threw up on Jericho’s feet. Show sympathy puke and Joey F. Styles showed up and said, “Oh my God!” I shit you not…The announce team hyped The Rock for next…[C]

Shore’s Slant: Holy God is Morrison/Ziggler going to destroy everything on HIAC. I may buy for that match alone. This match wasn’t great, but it was fun and gave hints at what these four men can all do. Loved the heat for both Morrison and Miz. The backstage stuff has to go. By the way, I’m a sympathy puker too.

Back from commercial, The Rock was introduced. His video played and he lampooned his “Finally…” line. He asked who in the blue hell was Dolph Ziggler. He “Finally” said his line. He cut a Rock promo and pointed out he named the show. He did all his catch phrases, had the crowd chant his name twice, and killed CM Punk. He said his name should be BM Punk for “bowel movement” as that is what the crowd wanted to take every time he opened his mouth.

[Q5]He said he had never faced Punk but he had faced the Undertaker. He said he had beat the Undertaker’s ass all over the world. Then he asked the producer to cut that because he didn’t want to get Tombstoned. The guy argued and Rock hit him with his, “It doesn’t matter what you think.” He cut a rhyme and said he should host Raw and the place went bat guano. He closed with “If you smell…” and his music played…The announce team hyped the main event…[C]

Shore’s Slant: That almost brought a tear to my eye.

Back from commercial, the Divas came out for a lumberjill match for the Women’s Championship. Melina was out first, followed McCool…

3. Michelle McCool defeated Melina to retain the Women’s Championship at 2:29. McCool took control immediately. Melina was the first to be tossed to the floor, but McCool went and got her instead of letting the other Divas do it. Melina reversed a whip into a one man flapjack for two. Melina hit the ropes and Jillian Hall grabbed her foot. Melina dove onto her and another Diva on the floor. All hell broke loose and the ref was distracted. Melina went to the top rope, but Beth Phoenix swept her legs. McCool hit the faith breaker for the win…

[Q6]McCool’s main squeeze The Undertaker cut a video promo. He said spooky stuff and said he would beat Punk at HIAC…[C]

Shore’s Slant: All I have to say is it is a damn shame that this is the closest Beth Phoenix and Natty Neidhart can get to a title match.

Back from commercial, a shot of Bean-town showed and then cut backstage to the crappy party. Drew McIntyre tried to make a troast and R-Truth beat him down. They were broke up by several wrestlers…Back ringside, DX made their entrance as Justin Roberts introduced the match as the “Biggest 8 Man Tag Match in Smackdown History.”

Shore’s Slant: Holy crap, they gave this match 30 minutes!

John Cena made his ring entrance next. Smackdown moment 100 played and it was Cena introducing the current POS title belt. Undertaker made his entrance next.

Shore’s Slant: Oh right, I forgot about this entrance. This match only gets 5 minutes.

Smackdown moment number 32 was Undertaker tombstoning Vickie Guerrero….

[Q7][C]Back from commercial, Legacy made their entrance together. CM Punk was out next…

4. John Cena, The Undertaker, and Degeneration-X defeated CM Punk and Legacy. Rhodes and Cena started at 21:49. Cena killed Rhodes and tagged in Hunter. Rhodes quickly tagged DiBiase. Hunter destroyed DiBiase and tagged in HBK. HBK wrapped up an arm bar and started to tag Hunter. He stopped and put his hand out to Taker. They stared at each other for a moment and Taker started to tag, but DiBiase hit a knee. He whipped Shawn and Taker got a blind tag. HBK hit a chop and stared at Taker. Rhodes tagged in and ran at them and Taker leveled Rhodes. He and HBK stared at each other again before Shown finally left the ring. Take worked Rhodes in the corner into the break…[C]

Back at 7:28, Taker clubbed Rhodes for two. He tagged in Hunter who held a standing vertical suplex on Rhodes for close to 10 seconds. He tagged in HBK who promptly got beat up by Rhodes.

[Q8]Orton tagged in and worked HBK in the corner. He distracted the ref and his teammates choked HBK. CMP Punk tagged in and went to work on HBK. The heels cheated again and Orton tagged back in. He worked his heel moves and HBK tried for a tag. Orton stopped him, but HBK escaped again and tried. Rhodes tagged in and made the save, but HBK kicked him and tagged Cena. Cena cleaned up and tried to double AA Legacy. They escaped and Hi-Lowed him to take control…[C]

Back at 15:49, Punk hit a sitting dropkick on Cena for two. Orton tagged in and went to work on Cena. Orton clubbed Cena 183740022 times and then a knee drop for two. Out of nowhere, Cena lifted Orton for an AA, but Orton reversed into a DDT for two. DiBiase tagged in. He slapped on the Randy Orton chinlock. Nice to see being in Legacy has taught him something. Cena powered out, but ate a clothesline for his efforts. Cena rolled out of the way of a fist drop and hit a belly to belly suplex. Double hot tags to HHH and Punk. Hunter hit the high knee, face buster and spinebuster.

Taker tagged in and Punk tagged Orton. Take tossed Orton in and hit Snake Eyes and Old School. Orton reversed a move into his backbreaker. He reached for Taker who locked in Hell’s Gate. Rhodes made the save. He was tossed to the floor by Hunter DiBiase ran in and set up for Dream Street, but HBK hit Sweet Chin Music and Hunter followed with the Pedigree. He rolled to the floor and Punk took out HBK and HHH. Cena scooped him up and hit the AA over the top rope onto Legacy. Each face got in a corner and Orton stood. He looked around and then Taker scooped him up for the tombstone for the win. Post match, confetti fell as all three entrance music played…

Shore’s Slant: That was about 15 minutes too long, but you knew we were going to get a face fest for the celebratory show. The live crowd seemed to be into it and at this point, you can’t really make Orton look like any more of a puss than they have. I mean, if this was real, would any of you bet on Orton Sunday? No. And if he wins, it will look like a fluke so who cares. Happy Anniversary WWE. Now keep the Raw asses off my show so we can get back to normal. Thanks for reading and I’ll see you next week.
