WWE Smackdown on MyNetworkTV
Taped in Hamilton, Ontario
[Q1] Video was shown of the world title match from Sunday night at Breaking Point and how the Montreal Screwjob was done again between Undertaker and Punk. A limo pulled up and Teddy Long got a ton of heat from the crowd. A bunch of jabronis were Long’s security and he wanted to make sure that they kept him safe. The opening montage aired. Justin Roberts introduced Batista to a nice ovation and he clapped hands with fans and the announcers. Video was shown of Batista beating on Orton from Raw this past Monday.
Dave cut a promo and he mentioned that his contract expired on Raw and this was the first time he got to choose where he wanted to be and he chose to be on Smackdown, the “A” Show. He said he couldn’t wait to get started and Chris Jericho interrupted. Jericho got a tweener reaction and he said how sweet and heartwarming that Dave is back on the show. He said babies are smiling and the birds are chirping because Batista’s back. He said that Dave being back makes him sick and they are like Edge who he called an injury prone loser. He said that he was begging for cheers from the hypocritical crowd. He said that he is the true face of Smackdown and everyone knows it.
He said a lot has changed since he been gone because he has been gone for a long time. He says he is the man of the show and the crowd gave him heat. Dave said that he was always told to be the man; you have to beat the man. He said they will have a chance to catch up and Jericho has a match against him and he proceeded to spinebust Jericho.
Mind of Marv: Good opening segment which has potential to be a nice feud. But for all the Morrison marks, with Batista coming back, you can forget a world title match anytime soon, ugh.
Backstage, Jericho bitched to Big Show about him not helping him. Jericho said he will handle Batista by himself. An interview with Scott Armstrong is later tonight. [C]
Mind of Marv: I’m 50/50 about JeriShow breaking up, but Jericho has fresh feuds as a singles competitor so get rid of the Big Slow, so he can go back to jobbing to Cena.
1. Intercontinental Champion John Morrison defeated Mike Knox in 7:55.The match started with Knox getting the early advantage. Morrison used his speed by hitting a bicycle kick and a hitting a moonsault to Knox outside of the ring. [C]
The match returned with Knox applying a chin lock to Morrison. During the commercial, Knox threw Morrison into the ring post. Knox hit a big boot on Morrison and worked on Morrison’s back for a nearfall. Knox hit backbreakers on Morrison to work on his back. Morrison hit a tornado DDT for a nearfall. Ziggler said he hoped that the Palace of Wisdom have an ice machine. Lame ass line. Morrison hit the running knee and the standing shooting star press. Knox hit a crossbody for a nearfall. Morrison hit the Flying Chuck and the Starship Pain for the win.
Morrison grabbed a mic and looked at Ziggler and told him how you doing. He said did he have a good time playing footsie with Todd Grisham. He said the only name the WWE Universe will be chanting is Mr. Ziggles. And the crowd started to chant Mr. Ziggles and Morrison said see you at the PPV, Mr. Ziggles. The announcers talked about the Montreal Screwjob II this past Sunday.
Mind of Marv: Good match, but Knox could use a win if they were to face each other again. Knox is a great heel, but its hard to get him over when crickets boo louder than the crowd. As far as this Morrison and Ziggler feud, this an excellent upper mid-card feud that just makes Smackdown genuine.
Josh Matthews interviewed Scott Armstrong and he said that he administered the decision because he been around for 30 years and he has a wife and kids to care of. He said he had to do something that he knew was wrong and he is not proud of, but he had to do what he had to do to keep his job. [C]
Mind of Marv: That’s all they can come up for him? I got a wife and kids to take care of? That was a waste of interview space. What they gonna have him endure now? Boos from the crowd? Taker eventually beating and squashing him? Ugh.
[Q3] 2. Melina defeated Women’s Champion Michelle McCool in a non-title match in 4:15. The match started slow with a cat and mouse chase between both women. McCool got the advantage with blows to Melina. McCool used Melina’s flexibility to apply a Dragon Sleeper. McCool went for a baseball slide but Melina dodged her and got on the attack. Melina started to scream and got some offense on McCool, but McCool countered with big boot for a nearfall. McCool went for her finisher, but Melina countered with the Last Call.
Mind of Marv: Man, this match was boring as hell. I almost drifted off for a minute. Forgettable match and no one including myself cared about this match.
Meanwhile, Teddy Long was talking to security and Vince came in to pick on him some more. Vince said that Long was supposed to bring something to change the face of Smackdown and he commended him for bringing Batista to the brand. Then he asked why did he cross the Undertaker? Long wanted to explain but Vince said he wanted an explanation and he better go and tell the fans why he double crossed Taker. Vince asked if he knows what Taker will do to him and Long ran off. [C]
Mind of Marv: Long looks more and more like a tool every month and its sad we have to endure Vince every damn week.
[Q4] Teddy Long and his jabroni security guards came out to some good heat. Video was shown of the screwjob was shown. Long welcomed Batista back to the brand and the crowd gave him heat. He said that he admitted that the match was pre-planned for Taker to lose the match. He said he will not say he is not afraid of the Undertaker because he is. He said that he is the only the one involved, Punk and Scott Armstrong is part of it too. He said that reason he had to do it because he has a family to take care of and he talked about the recession. He apologized but the crowd wasn’t hearing it because they continued to give him heat.
He said that he hopes that Taker can find it in his heart to forgive him. There was “You Screwed Taker” chants amongst the crowd. Long went to his limo and Taker said "Buckle up Teddy!" The limo started to smoke and it was no way he could get out.
Mind of Marv: Damn, let this shit go fellow neighbors of the north. The “You Screwed _______” chants will never go away, thanks WWE. Taker abducting Long was so terrible it looked like a bad scary movie. I am really not feeling this first hour of Smackdown because it’s not making sense to me.
[Q5] Video was shown of this terrible abduction and Justin Roberts introduced C.M. Punk. Punk came out for another straightedge promo with a Kool-Aid smile. He said he told you so. And he said that he is out here a lot and mentioned that he will beat Jeff and he did. He will eliminate Jeff Hardy and he did. He said that he made Taker tap and he did. He said that he didn’t come out here to say he is the first to make him tap, but he is out here to confront Taker. He will stick the world title in his face to say “ I told you so!”
He said it feels like the crowd is saying that he is preaching to them. He said he needs someone who is righteous and not morally corrupt. He said that half of the people have given up by popping a pill or ravish their bodies with beer. He said that they make excuses by inhaling their lives by smoking and by the end of the day they need a pill to go to sleep. He called the crowd zombies because they go to the pharmacy and get anti-depressant pills. He called the crowd liars and he can see right through them. He said that he is not a liar and he means what he says and means what he says. He is a choice of a new generation and he is first and only straightedge world champ in history. He said if you aren’t straightedge, he is better than them.
Mind of Marv: Excellent promo which woke me up because this show has been lackluster so far. Punk continues to get heat every week and he is starting to get Edge golden when it comes to getting crowd heat. I support this heel Punk because the babyface version, well it sucked.
Batista vs. Jericho is the main event later tonight…[C]
[Q6] 3. The Hart Dynasty defeated Cryme Tyme in 11:45. Shad and DH started the matchup. Shad hit a shoulder block to DH and DH took control of the match and he Stone Cold stomped Shad in the corner. Shad came back with clotheslines for a nearfall. JTG tagged in and splashed and dropkicked DH. Shad bench pressed Kidd and threw him on DH outside of the ring. [C]
The show returned with the Harts working on Shad. Kidd got the tag in and placed Shad in a headlock. DH tagged back in worked on Shad’s back. DH placed a submission on Shad and Shad countered with a big boot to DH. The Harts continued to work on Shad around the 9:00 mark and Shad came back with a clothesline. JTG got the hot tag in and hit a shoulder block and dropkick to Kidd. JTG hit a leg drop to Kidd for a nearfall. JR talked about Kanye West by calling him Can-Ye and Grisham corrected him and said Kanye.
Eve and Natalya scrapped outside of the ring and Kidd hit a Blockbuster to JTG to score the win. The crowd cheered the finish to praise the home country Harts.
Mind of Marv: Too many holds in this match and the crowd sat on their hands. The ending they cheered for to support the Harts but this is another feud I want to end. Why in the hell that they mention Kanye West on here? I bet my paycheck that Vince fed JR that BS, ugh.
Backstage, Melina walked into a room with pictures of Dolph and Michelle McCool plastered all over. Melina apologized and Maria accused Melina of putting up the pictures. Maria said she was done and Melina looks silly for even telling her. Batista vs. Jericho is later on and Khali and Kane are next. [C]
Mind of Marv: Is it me, or does Maria make Peter Griffin look smart?
[Q7] 4. The Great Khali (with Ranjin Singh) and Kane ended in a no-contest in :50. Khali had the early part of the offense and Kane countered with a uppercut. Kane took a chair and smacked Khali to end the match. Kane dragged Khali and took the ring steps and smashed Khali’s leg. Kane looked at the Titan Tron and smiled. [C]
Mind of Marv: Thank the lord that this feud is 100% over.
The show returned with Khali getting stretchered out of the arena. The Smack of the Night was shown with all the attacks Drew McIntyre did to R-Truth for the past couple of weeks.
[Q8] Charlie Haas was supposed to wrestle R-Truth, but Drew McIntyre came out and got a mic and said that Truth was involved in an accident in the back and he is unable to compete. He said Haas wins by forfeit and McIntyre hit his stroke DDT to Haas.
Mind of Marv: Is McIntyre going to be built as a good heel or will he basically get squashed by Truth? These attacks are stupid and this was clearly a forgettable segment.
Batista vs. Jericho is next…[C]
5. Batista defeated Unified Tag Champion Chris Jericho in 6:30. Jericho slapped Batista to start the match and Batista did his usual shoulder in the corner move and power slammed Jericho for a nearfall. Jericho hit a low dropkick to Batista’s leg. Jericho hit a baseball slide to Batista and Big Show was watching backstage. Jericho slammed Batista’s face in the announce table and continued to work on him with blows to the head.
Jericho applied a hold, but Jericho took over with blows to the head. Batista hit a side slam to Jericho and clotheslined him in the corner. Jericho went to for a Lionsault, but he missed and Batista went for a spine buster which was countered by a running insurghi for a nearfall. Batista hit a clothesline after Jericho went to the top rope. Batista ran into the ring post and Jericho went for the cover using the ropes but it was still a nearfall. Batista went for a Batista Bomb but Jericho countered with the Walls of Jericho.
Jericho went for the Codebreaker but Batista countered with a Batista Bomb to win the match. Backstage, Big Show was watching and Josh Matthews interviewed Show. Show challenged Batista for next week.
Mind of Marv: Decent main event but I am so used to 20 minute main events, it disappointed me. I presume with Batista coming back, they didn’t want him to wrestle for a long time. Overall, this show sucked. I may sound crazy and get a ton of emails for this, but Raw was actually better than Smackdown this week. This show was just seemed thrown together with a ton of rematches, Vince continuing to make Teddy Long look stupid, and Taker up to his old mind games again. This show gets a “D” in my book because it was not clicking with me.
Batista being on the brand is something I will have to get used to again, but hopefully he doesn’t bury the up and coming stars on this brand or it will get stale very quickly. Maybe Twilling will have a different view in the hitlist.
The Smackdown Hitlist available tomorrow and I had some clunkers last week, but I it was some last minute changes to those matchups, but I will supply you with better picks this week:
Redskins over Rams
49ers over Seahawks
Chicago over Pittsburgh – Pittsburgh is Rich Twilling’s team and Da Bears are my home team so I am picking the upset. I know Jay Cutler played like crap, but it can’t possibly happen two weeks in a row. Powell and Twilling are probably laughing their asses off, but it should be a good late afternoon game in my hometown
Send some emails at mr.hermanstyne@gmail.com and I will debate anything, WWE or NFL related. Thanks for reading and I’ll see you next week.
