9/11 Hermanstyne's Live WWE Smackdown Coverage: Breaking Point Go Home Edition, Mike Knox vs. Finlay in a Belfast Brawl, JeriShow vs. Cryme Tyme, IC Champ John Morrison in Action, C.M. Punk vs. Matt Hardy in a Submission Match
Sep 11, 2009 - 07:00 PM

WWE Smackdown on MyNetworkTV
Taped in Rockford, IL

[Q1] The show opened with the Undertaker’s hour long entrance.

Mind of Marv: When you’re at the actual show, it can get extremely hot in the front rows and it lasts for about 15 minutes.

Taker said that sands of time have fallen slowly but in 2 days he will reclaim the world title. He said he will cast his shadow of darkness over Smackdown. He said Punk is growing tired and he is waking up in a sweat because his Breaking Point will be realized when he is put in the Hell’s Gate. He says when Punk submits, not only he will relinquish the world title, but hand him his soul. He said the symphony of lies should end and Punk interrupts.

Punk comes out smiling and mocks Taker. Punk says that he sees him for what he really is and says that he is something worse. He called the fans chemically influenced and says he is this generation’s Alice in Wonderland. He says that he has them brainwashed because the people believe in the Undertaker. He says that Taker that the people believe that he has magical powers and he can take the title from him. He mentions Hogan, Flair and HBK.

He says that he is stronger that all of these men and he is not after Taker’s soul. He says he wants Taker to tap out.
He said it would be hilarious to see Taker tap and the fans will go back to drinking 40oz and popping pills to soothe the fact that Taker tapped. He said he will make Matt Hardy tap to the Anaconda Vice and called the fans weak. He said he will be an icon and the only straightedge world heavyweight champion in history. He said that they will join him to “Just Say No.”

Taker said that they won’t be saying “Just Say No”, they will be saying “Rest In Peace.”

Mind of Marv: Very good segment with Punk gaining more heat by the week and Taker doing his usual “dead man” promo. This should be an interesting match as I don’t expect it to end clean.

The Belfast Brawl is next…[C]

[Q2] The Smack of the night was shown with Finlay knocking Knox out with the shelleigh. The “educated” Mike Knox cut a short promo…

1. Finlay defeated Mike Knox in a Belfast Brawl in 9:45. Finlay started with getting aggressive on Knox with punches in the corner of the ring. Knox hit a power slam on Finlay and hit three elbows to Finlay. Finlay hit a baseball slide on Knox. Knox grabbed a chair but Finlay countered by grabbing it. They got back in the ring and Knox kicked Finlay with the chair in his face. [C]

Knox hit a side slam on Finlay through a chair. Knox threw Finlay outside of the ring and threw garbage cans at Finlay. Knox stomped on a garbage can and threw Finlay in the audience. Finlay clotheslined Knox back in the ring area. Knox rammed Finlay into the security wall and hit him with a lid. Knox continued to beat the hell out of Finlay with a garbage can. Knox grabbed a table and the crowd cheered.

Finlay grabbed the shelleigh and Knox set up the table. Finlay started to hit Knox with the trash can, but Knox countered by throwing Finlay in to the table. Knox continued with the lid but Finlay knocked Knox out with the shelleigh. Knox landed odd on Finlay and Finlay scored the win with the pinfall.

Mind of Marv: Decent match, weak and predictable finish. I don’t mind Finlay working with young stars, but if every win is using that shelleigh, it’s pathetic.

Backstage, McCool and Dolph Ziggler were talking and McCool started to flirt with Dolph and Layla taped everything on her phone. [C]

Mind of Marv: Are you serious? This is so high school if you ask me…

[Q3] The Raw rebound was shown…

Mind of Marv: You just don’t know how pissed I was because I wasn’t there in my hometown because Raw was actually fun. I’m even more mad because this coming week because my favorite Diva of all time, Trish Stratus is the guest host, ugh.

2. The Great Khali (with Ranjin Singh) and David Hart Smith (with The Hart Dynasty) never occurred. The match never started because Kane came in and basically beat the hell out of Khali. Kane grabbed a Singapore Cane and Khali chopped and hit the Punjabi Plunge on Kane.

JeriShow is coming to the ring, next…

Mind of Marv: We get this but not John Morrison on the PPV? That just sucks if you ask me…

[Q4] 3. Unified Tag Team Champions Chris Jericho and Big Show beat Cryme Tyme in a non-title match in 12:00. JTG and Jericho started the match. Jericho attacked JTG in the corner and JTG got two quick nearfalls on Jericho. JTG hit a dropkick and clotheslined Jericho outside of the ring. Jericho started to snap to a commercial….[C]

The show returned with JTG applying an armbar to Jericho. JTG hit a somewhat botched leg drop for a nearfall. Shad got in the match and started to work on Jericho. CT started to work on Jericho and got a nearfall on Jericho. Jericho got a cheap shot on JTG and tagged Show in. Show head butted and worked on JTG. Shad got in the match and worked on both heels. Show chopped Shad in the air and tagged back Jericho. Jericho tried to attack Shad but Shad hit a big boot to Jericho. Shad went for the tag but Jericho grabbed him and tagged Show in. Show applied a chin lock to Shad in the middle of the ring. Shad tried to come back but the heels took control of Shad.

Jericho went for the bulldog, but Shad hit a power slam on Jericho. JTG got some quick offense on Jericho and Show interrupted. JTG tried to go to the top, but Jericho countered and tried to use the ropes for a nearfall. JTG was on the ropes and Show knocked the hell out him and Jericho scored the win.

Mind of Marv: Very good match that shows that JTG is the better worker. I don’t know if he will make it as a singles wrestler, but his ring work is much underrated. This unified tag match should be interesting Sunday.

Backstage, Teddy Long and Vince was backstage and mentioned that Long is still on probation. Vince said that he didn’t built his empire on good, its excellent. Long said he had a surprise for Vince next week and mentioned that it was good. Vince said he didn’t like good and he wants excellent. [C]

Mind of Marv: Something tells me this is not a good thing and I won’t be happy about it…

[Q5] Best of Smackdown DVD is out this Tuesday…

Mind of Marv: I will be getting that this week...

4. Intercontinental Champion John Morrison beat Charlie Haas in 3:21. Hass got aggressive early but Morrison countered with a backbreaker. Haas got back aggressive with a slam and worked on Morrison in the corner. Haas applied a inverted armbar to Morrison and then worked on his shoulder. Morrison hit a missile dropkick and a standing shooting star press for a nearfall. Haas threw Morrison in the ring post and hit an armbar takedown to Morrison.

Morrison hit a mule kick and the Starship Pain to Haas for the quick win. Morrison cut a promo and said that he had one of the greatest matches of his career. He put over Mysterio and said that these images can help him described the victory. Video was shown of him winning and Morrison thanked him for winning the title and said whenever he wants a rematch, he can have it. Ziggler interrupted.

[Q6] Ziggler said it sickened him because Morrison and Mysterio had a match. Morrison and Ziggler argued and Ziggler said he wants his title match. Morrison said if he wants a title match, he can have it now. Ziggler says no and he will have the title match on his terms. Morrison started to rip him and called him Mr. Ziggles. Morrison said that everyone is chanting Ziggles. He asked if Maria calls him Ziggles. Ziggler said stop it or he will leave the stage and the crowd kept chanting Mr. Ziggles.

Mind of Marv: Not much to say about this match, but Morrison is a star. I would really want to see him in the world title picture by the beginning of next year.

Josh Matthews interviewed Matt Hardy. Matt mentioned that two submissions will experience two submissions: himself and the Undertaker. He said he will not tap to the Anaconda Vice and he will make sure he doesn’t make it to Breaking Point. [C]

5. Layla (with Michelle McCool) beat Melina in 3:00. The match was back and forth for the first minute. Pinfalls were exchanged but Melina got the advantage with knees to Layla and a bulldog for a nearfall. McCool hit Melina in the ribs with the crutch and Layla scored the upset win.

Mind of Marv: McCool annoys me and her walking all crippled makes things no better.

Backstage, Josh Matthews interviewed R-Truth. Truth cuts a promo and McIntyre beats his ass for the third week in a row. [C]

Mind of Marv: Can they finally wrestle already, damn…

[Q7] The announcers run down the Breaking Point PPV and Punk makes his entrance for the submission match. Video of the end of the show was shown of Taker decimating Punk. [C]

[Q8]6. World Heavyweight Champion C.M. Punk defeated Matt Hardy in a submission match in 13:45. Punk started with kicks but Matt countered easily on Punk. Matt applied an body scissors on Punk and hit three backbreakers. Matt applied a double arm body scissors submission but Punk broke out. Punk kicked Matt in the gut and tried to go to the top but Punk missed and Matt worked on Punk’s knee with a knee drop. Matt continued to work on Punk’s knee and went for a figure four but Punk countered by throwing him into the ring post twice. [C]

The show returns with Punk working on Matt in the corner. Punk hit a knee bulldog to Matt’s head. Punk dropkicked Matt’s Head and started to punch him and applied a cobra clutch. Matt went for the figure four but Punk countered with a snap slam and a leg drop. Punk applied a neck body scissors submission to Matt. Punk hit a roundhouse kick to Matt’s head but Matt countered with a figure four. Punk was trembling but he managed to counter on Matt. Matt hit a bulldog on Punk and hit the Side Effect. Matt went for the Twist of Fate but Punk countered with the GTS but Matt countered with a half Boston Crab.

Punk hit another roundhouse kick and Punk applied the Anaconda Vice to make Matt tap. Punk celebrated in the ring and the Bell Toll came…

The lights came back on and Taker had the world title in his hands to close the show…

Mind of Marv: Decent main event for the most part. Taker and Punk should be a good contest but it won’t be a clean finish to this. Overall, this show gets a “B” but by a thread because it was some weak moments and besides Smackdown is not the big focus on this particular PPV, so it may not be as newsworthy.

But, Powell will have the live coverage because he doesn’t have to watch football on Sunday night because my Bears will be facing the hated Packers. But I will still have the PPV to catch the action.

The Smackdown Hitlist available tomorrow and I have some NFL upset alerts to check out:

Miami over Atlanta

Tampa Bay over Dallas

And one pick that would make Powell jump out of his seat: Cleveland over Minnesota.
I may sound crazy, but I believe in Brady Quinn. This can become a shootout and Cleveland wins by a field goal. But if you think otherwise, send some emails at mr.hermanstyne@gmail.com and I will debate with you about these upsets or anything WWE related.
