9/4 Hermanstyne's Live WWE Smackdown Coverage: The Return of the Undertaker, Diva Tag Action, John Morrison vs. Rey Mysterio for Intercontinental Title, C.M. Punk vs. Matt Hardy
Sep 4, 2009 - 09:00 PM

WWE Smackdown on MyNetworkTV
Taped in Cleveland, Ohio

[Q1] The show started with video of Jeff Hardy’s farewell and the C.M. Punk attack afterwards. Jeff Hardy’s music played but Punk came out dressed as Jeff and mocked him which led to a ton of heat from the crowd.

Mind of Marv: LMAO!!!!

They showed fans looking disgusted and Punk taunted the fans. He said that the crowd should soak it up because this is the last you will see of Jeff on Smackdown. He said no more face paint, no more stupid armbands, and no more excuses. He said that they aren’t strong enough like him and he called the crowd weak. He said that they have a champion to be proud of, a straightedge world champ. He said that he the only one that is strong enough and he is built to last and here to stay. He said it’s a choice of a new generation and his name is C.M. Punk.

He put over the Undertaker and he is no longer an icon on Smackdown. He said he is the only back to back MITB winner, he retired Jeff Hardy and he challenged the Undertaker to come out and face him. He said it wasn’t the best interest for Taker to come out and face him. The crowd chanted “We want Hardy.” He kept ripping the crowd about smoking and drinking.

He said talked about the Anaconda Vise and Matt Hardy interrupted Punk. Matt tackled Punk and both guys brawled in the ring. The referees broke both of them up. JR hyped the return of the Undertaker. [C]

Mind of Marv: Hot opening segment which can lead to a money feud down the road. Good 15 minutes of TV if you ask me…

[Q2] The IC title match hyped as the main event tonight. Punk complained to Teddy Long and Long set a match between Punk and Matt for later tonight. Khali made his ring entrance and vide was shown from last week. Kane vs. Khali is a Singapore Cane match for Breaking Point.

Mind of Marv: This match on a PPV again??? Time to get a beer…

Mike Knox came out and a pre recorded video of Knox talking…

Mind of Marv: Didn’t catch everything, but Knox seriously sounds like a professor.

1. Finlay and The Great Khali defeated Kane and Mike Knox in 9:45. Finlay and Knox began the match. Knox powerslammed Finlay for a nearfall. Kane got the tag and he sideslammed Finlay. Kane went to the top but he missed. Finlay tagged Khali and Kane tagged Knox. Khali applied the vice grip on Knox and Kane pulled him outside the ring. [C]

The show returned with Khali and Kane on the attack. Knox got back in the match, but Khali still dominated with chops, ugh. Finlay got back in and worked on Knox. Knox got an elbow in but Finlay countered. Kane got a cheap shot in and the heels started to work on Finlay. Kane applied a headlock to Finlay in the middle of the ring. Knox hit a nasty cross body on Finlay for a nearfall and the heels continued the attack.

[Q3] Kane tried to attack Ranjin Singh but Khali attacked Kane. Finlay took the shelleigh and knocked Knox out for the win.

Backstage, Vince and Teddy Long were talking about the WCW DVD. Vince bragged about the Hardy and Punk match last week. He talked about the Undertaker and Punk’s submission match. Vince started to chastise Long about his Pink Panther ass blazer. Long started to kiss ass and looked stupefied when Vince left. The Undertaker return was hyped again. [C]

Mind of Marv: Slow and forgettable match. They worked hard but the match didn’t click with me. Kane and Khali will be a snore fest and I hate the fact that Finlay uses that damn shelleigh…

Backstage, Eve, Michelle McCool and Maria were talking and McCool ripped Maria. McCool called Maria a “flavor of the week.” Maria called McCool egotistical and Melina interjected and threatened McCool. McCool threaten Melina with jail and McCool left. Melina wanted to talk to Maria and she said she was a good girl and Eve dragged her out.

The IC title match is next…[C]

[Q4] 2. John Morrison defeated Rey Mysterio to become the new Intercontinental Champion in 25:20. The match started with “Let’s go Morrison” chants. Both guys locked up for the first minute of the match. There were a lot of holds quick pinfalls and Dolph Ziggler was watching backstage. [C]

The show returned with both guys outside of the ring. Mysterio Irish whipped Morrison and tried to cross body him, but Morrison moved and Morrison when for the pin for a two count. Morrison applied an armbar submission to Mysterio. Mysterio did a 720 hurracrana type takeover for a nearfall. Morrison went for a cover but Mysterio kicked him and hit a springboard moonsault for a nearfall. Mysterio hit a leg drop for a nearfall and placed Morrison in a headlock.

[Q5] Morrison powered out with an inverted dropkick for a nearfall. Morrison hit a standing shooting star press for a nearfall. Mysterio kicked Morrison but Morrison threw Mysterio outside of the ring. The referee started the count and Morrison threw Mysterio back in the ring. Morrison applied a spinning dropkick for a nearfall. Mysterio went for a innovative rollup for two nearfalls. Mysterio went for the 619 but both guys did a double cross body on each other.

Morrison side slammed Mysterio for a nearfall. Morrison applied a body scissors to Mysterio. Mysterio slapped and hit a baseball slide to Morrison. The ref began the ten count and it reached six. Mysterio hit a springboard leg drop for a nearfall. Morrison hit a inverted power bomb for a nearfall. Morrison hit that nasty knee to Mysterio’s dome for a nearfall. Mysterio hit an spinning springboard and kick for a nearfall.

Mysterio went to the top but Morrison hit a dropkick in the air for a nearfall. Morrison went for Starship Pain bit Mysterio countered with the 619. Mysterio went for the canton but Morrison countered with a Chuck Kick for the 2.99999 count. Morrison hit a tilt-o-whirl backbreaker and went for Starship pain again but Mysterio countered. Morrison finally hit Starship Pain to win the belt in a classic match.

Mind of Marv: Really??? A 25 minute match was on free TV? Thanks WWE for finally giving us a treat. Both guys busted their ass and I will watch it again over the weekend, I ensure that. You are looking at a future world champion people.

The Matt Hardy and Punk match was hyped for later on tonight and the Undertaker return is still to come…[C]

[Q6] The Smack of the Night was shown with R-Truth getting attacked last week by Drew McIntyre. R-Truth and the lame entrance were shown and McIntyre did déjà vu yet again by attacking Truth. He mentioned that he made a statement and called Truth a dancing fool. He mentioned that he will ruin every party until everyone recognizes who he is. The Undertaker return is later…[C]

Mind of Marv: Are they going to push McIntyre or bury him? We’ll just have to find out in the upcoming weeks…

[Q7] The Divas made their entrance and damn...Layla is hot.

Mind of Marv: Shore can be infatuated with Eve but Layla got the better body, hands down.

3. Maria and Eve defeated Natalya and Layla in 4:40.Nattie and Maria started the match. Maria dominated the first minute but the heels attacked her to get the advantage. Nattie took control of Maria and Layla got the tag and kicked Maria in the kidney for a nearfall.

Nattie hit a snap suplex to Maria for a nearfall. The heels continued to dominate Maria. Maria hit an chin breaker to Layla and tagged Eve in the match. Eve had the advantage but Layla countered with a low dropkick for a nearfall. Eve scored the victory on Layla.

Josh Matthews interviewed Matt Hardy and Matt mentioned that he is after Punk. He said that he is not after the belt but he is after his career.

Mind of Marv: Decent Diva contest but Maria got her ass kicked for 3 minutes than Eve scores a cheap win. As far as Matt, a concise 20 second promo is good enough to get his point thru.

Punk made his entrance and Justin Roberts introduced him as the “Only Straight Edge World Heavyweight Champion” in history.

4. World Heavyweight Champion C.M. Punk and Matt Hardy ended in a no-contest in 18:45. The match started with a cat and mouse chase. Both guys exchanged blows to the head. Matt hit a clothesline to Punk and Punk ran out of the ring just to get fooled by Punk. Matt worked on Punk’s neck on the rope. Matt hit an elbow on Punk and Punk countered with elbows to Matt’s head.

[Q8] Matt hit a superplex for a nearfall. Matt grabbed his ribs and hit an elbow on Punk. Matt went for a suplex but Punk countered with a spear outside of the ring. [C]

The show returned with Punk applying an abdominal stretch. Punk hit a high knee to Matt’s abs and went for the cover but only for a two count. Punk continued to work on the abs of Matt with kicks. Punk applied a body scissors to Matt to work on his abs. Matt came back but Punk countered with an Irish Whip for a nearfall. Punk applied the body scissors again to Matt. Punk started to kick Matt in the abs and applied a abdominal stretch to Matt. Matt countered and both guys exchanged nearfalls.

Punk with for the high knee but he missed and slammed into the ring post. Matt hit a bulldog for a nearfall. Matt went for a Twist of Fate but Punk countered. Matt went for an inside cradle but it was a nearfall. Punk hit a roundhouse kick for a nearfall. Matt hit the Side Effect for a nearfall. Matt went for a crossbody but Punk countered with a kick to abs. Punk attacked Matt with a chair and tried to break his neck with the chair but the bell toll came…

Taker appeared and choke slammed Punk through the announcers table. Taker raised the fist for the pyro and the show ended there….

Mind of Marv: OK match. The match had its slow moments but it got a tad better towards the end. Taker attacking Punk was predictable and it was a decent way to end the show. Overall, besides that classic IC title match, this show was pretty average at best. My grade is a B but barely because if that IC title match wasn’t included, it would have been a C- at best.

The Smackdown Hitlist will be available in the morning and I wish everyone a safe Labor Day and Raw will be in my hometown, Chicago on Monday night. With Bob Barker being the host, hopefully we some Pricing Games, Divas being Pricing Girls and hearing that “Price is Right” Loser horn because that will be hilarity. And for some odd reason we may see a Happy Gilmore gimmick with Barker, so don’t be surprised.

Send some emails to: mr.hermanstyne@gmail.com and I will check in next week.
