8/20 Shore's WWE Superstars Live Coverage: Kelly Kelly vs. Beth Phoenix, Mark Henry vs. Chris Masters, Shelton Benjamin vs. Tyler Reks, and Charlie Haas vs. R-Truth
Aug 20, 2009 - 07:00 PM

Superstars on WGN America
Taped in St. Louis and Kansas City, MO.

[Q1]The opening video aired, followed by the pyro, and Michael “I’m getting Cole for Christmas” and Jerry “The King” Lawler welcomed us to Superstars. Kelly Kelly made her entrance followed by Beth Phoenix…

1. Kelly Kelly vs. Beth Phoenix at 4:58. Beth tried to power Kelly, but Kelly hit some elbows and took control. She hit a hurricanranna for two. Beth rolled to the floor and Kelly Kelly tried to hit a cross body. Beth caught her, but Kelly slipped off and drove Beth into the apron. Beth rolled in the ring and attacked Kelly as she tried to get in. Beth hit a slingshot hangman for two and then locked in an arm bar.

Beth tried to kick Kelly but she moved and Beth tied her leg up in the rope. Beth recovered quickly and went back on the attack. Kelly hit a drop toe hold into the ropes and then a spinning leg scissors. She went to the top and hit a crossbody for two. She put Beth in the corner and tried for a gymnastic elbow. Beth caught her on the shoulders. Kelly rolled down for two, but Beth hit a clothesline after the kick out. She followed with the Glam Slam for the win…The announce team hyped Masters vs. Henry…[C]

Shore’s Slant: Slow start in the match, but they turned it up nicely. Not the best Diva’s match, but not the worst ever either. Good opener that I hope means even better as we go along.

Back from commercial, Shelton Benjamin made his ring entrance as Josh Matthews and Matt Striker took over for ECW. Tyler Reks was out next, dude…

2. Shelton Benjamin defeated Tyler Reks at 3:23. Benjamin hit a knee at the bell and took control. Reks fought back but missed a clothesline in the corner. Benjamin reversed into a belly to back. He covered for one and locked in a chin lock.

[Q2]Reks fought out and hit the ropes, but Benjamin reversed into a Samoan Drop for two. Reks hit a school boy roll up out of nowhere for two. He went on the attack and hit a flying lariat and a powerslam, each for two. He went to the top and hit a crossbody that Benjamin rolled through for two. Benjamin hit a kick to Reks’s face and followed with Pay Dirt for the win…The announce team hyped Henry and Masters again…[C]

Shore’s Slant: Ho hum. That match wasn’t bad, but it felt like it was just getting warmed up when Benjamin hit his finisher. Four matches on this show is a terrible idea. Keep it at three and give each match a good time limit. Reks might be a star someday, but not with that gimmick.

Back from commercial, Todd Grisham and Jim Ross took over on commentary. They hyped a video that showed the Punk/Hardy history…They hyped the Smackdown six man tag match main event for tomorrow night…R-Truth was shown backstage heading towards the ring. His match is next…[C]

[Q3]Back from commercial, Charlie Haas was already in the ring. At least he was introduced. Truth made his lame, long ass entrance. Stop cheering for him you numb nuts! It encourages him…

3. R-Truth defeated Charlie Hass at 3:23. Grisham said Truth told him he knew Haas was a better wrestler, but he was a better fighter. Truth hit several kicks, but Haas slammed him to the gorund and took control. He locked in a rest hold that Truth fought out of. Truth hit a Sunset flip for two and Haas hit a quick drop kick to retake control. He slapped on a sleeper style headlock that Truth escaped by pushing off. Truth worked quick offense and hit a big hip toss for two. Haas managed to punch Truth and slam him, but he missed an elbow. Truth hit the ropes and hit the Lie Detector (corkscrew elbow) for the win…The announce team hyped the main event again…[C]

Shore’s Slant: I feel so bad for Haas. The guy can really work but this is all he will ever be. And I hate Truth’s gimmick. He should be a badass, not some dancing fool. Short match that left me not caring about either guy.

Back from commercial, a John Morrison hype video aired…

Shore’s Slant: Ahhhhhhh…..

Back ringside, Cole and Lawler were back on commentary. They hyped and played the Raw Rebound video that recapped the DX reunion. The Legacy beatdown footage had some slow, sad piano music playing over the top of it…

[Q4]The announce team ran down the SummerSlam card…Mark Henry made his ring entrance. His match is next…[C]

Back from commercial, Masters made his ring entrance…

4. Mark Henry defeated Chris Masters by countout at 5:55. Collar and elbow tie up led to Henry just shoving Masters away. Masters wanted a test of strength, but when Henry reached, Masters kicked him in the gut. He tried to slam Henry, but couldn’t. Henry hit his own slam. Masters tried to suplex Henry, but couldn’t. Henry hit his own suplex. Masters tried for the Masterlock, but couldn’t. Henry slammed him, but missed a splash.

Masters took control and stomped on Henry. He covered for two and locked in a reverse headlock. Henry made his feet and Masters tried for the Masterlock again. Henry backed into a corner and took control. He hit Masters several times, but Masters punched back and tried for the Masterlock again. Henry fought out and hit the World’s Strongest Slam. He covered, but Masters grabbed the rope at the 2.9999999999 count. He rolled to the floor and crawled around the ring until the ref counted him out. Post match, a video recapped the match. Henry celebrated ringside to end the show…[C]

Shore’s Slant: This match was fun…but kind of boring too. They only hit like 12 moves. The rest were strikes and rest locks. However, it was fun to watch Masters try the Masterlock again and again. It still wasn’t enough to save this show. This wasn’t the worst Superstars ever, but you can see it from here. What was most surprising was the small amount of hype for SummerSlam. Two videos and a card rundown. Odd. Thanks for reading and I’ll see you tomorrow night for Smackdown.
