8/18 Twilling's WWE "ECW on Syfy" Live Coverage: Christian and Tommy Dreamer vs. William Regal and Vladimir Kozlov, final hype for Christian vs. Regal at SummerSlam
By Rich Twilling Aug 18, 2009 - 10:00 PM |

WWE “ECW on Syfy”
Taped earlier tonight in Kansas City, MO
[Q1] The opening video aired and fireworks lit up the stage. Josh Matthews and Matt Striker welcomed us to the show. Striker plugged tonight’s main event of Christian and Tommy Dreamer vs. William Regal and Vladimir Kozlov. The Hurricane made his way to the ring...
1. Hurricane Helms defeated Paul Burchill (with Katie Lea) in 10:56.. During Burchill’s entrance, footage aired of last week’s encounter between the two. At the one minute mark, Hurricane attempted a chokeslam but Burchill countered. Every time Hurricane motioned like a superhero, Burchill complained as if to say “this is ridiculous.” Helms hit a top rope high cross body onto Burchill on the floor... [C]
Burchill was in control coming back from commercial. Syfy plays their commercials too loudly. That is annoying as shit. Burchill hit a weird looking running and jumping double knee strike to a standing Hurricane. Helms came back after countering a top rope move from Burchill. Burchill hit a double Pele kick for a two count. Impressive.
Helms hit a top rope hurricarana and scored a very nearfall. He followed up with the Eye of the Hurricane for the win. By the way, this new referee has a screwed up looking count cadence. After the match, Hurricane celebrated with the fans...
Twill’s Two Cents: Good opener and an especially good second five minutes. Helms looks good and healthy. Burchill continues to look good in the ring and I continue to wonder why he isn’t a huge star.
[Q2] New interviewer Courtney Taylor interviewed Tommy Dreamer backstage. She sort of stumbled through her intro. William Regal approached Dreamer and Vladimir Kozlov attacked him from behind. He set Dreamer up for Regal’s running knee... [C]
Twill’s Two Cents: The new girl isn’t that hot. Hmmm. Nice segment that might set up a handicap match for later, or a surprise partner.
Did you know? WWE Classics has a lot of old matches to watch from WWE, ECW, WCCW, AWA, WCW, and the NWA...
Backstage personnel and Christian checked on Tommy Dreamer...
Abraham Washington was introduced to host his show...
Twill’s Two Cents: Oh shit.
Washington badmouthed the crowd and plugged SummerSlam. He introduced his guest, Goldust. Goldust came out in his ring gear. He shook Abe’s hand and Abe wiped it on his pants. Goldust started to talk about Sheamus and started to have the shakes from being electrocuted six and a half years ago.
Washington said he had another guest. He introduced Sheamus, who also came out in his ring gear. Sheamus told Goldust he got lucky last week. They stood eye to eye and Goldust had a convulsion. Washington thanked the fans and the show ended...
[Q3] Courtney interviewed Tiffany backstage about Tommy Dreamer. Tiffany took a deep breath and acted like she was reading a teleprompter. She said Dreamer had a concussion and if Christian could find another partner, the main event would go on as planned...
Twill’s Two Cents: Get Tiffany and Courtney a few drinks and they’ll relax a bit! The Abraham Washington Show sucks.
Back from commercial, Zack Ryder made his way to the ring. Unfortunately, he received zero reaction...
2. Zack Ryder defeated Yoshi Tatsu in 3:03. Fast paced action early that saw Yoshi attempted a superplex and Ryder countering with an arm breaker across the top rope. He continued to work on the arm. Yoshi locked in an armbar out of a hurricarana attempt. Yoshi tried a springboard elbow from the apron. Ryder put up his knees and scored the pinfall...
Ryder dropped his “Woo woo woo” line after the match. The announcers wondered who would replace Dreamer... [C]
Twill’s Two Cents: That was weak and it could have been a damn good match between these two men. Since when does putting your knees up to counter a move incapacitate your opponent enough to score the pinfall?
A “Rise and Fall of WCW” DVD ad aired. It looked like Chris Jericho referred to Eric Bischoff, Vince Russo, and Kevin Nash as the “three stooges.” Goldberg was interviewed for the piece but it looked like Hulk Hogan was not...
[Q4] Pretty Boy Floyd Mayweather will be hosting Raw this Monday and the video that aired last night was shown again...
The Raw Rebound featured the return of DX and Legacy attacking Shawn Michaels and Triple H last night. After the video, Matthews and Striker went through the SummerSlam lineup...
Backstage, Christian told Tiffany he would wrestle by himself if need be. She wouldn’t allow it. He wanted more time to find someone. She said the match was next. Someone knocked on the door and came in but couldn’t be seen. Christian said, “that will work.” Tiffany nodded in agreement...
Twill’s Two Cents: It has to be Ezekiel Jackson.
The heel team and Christian made their entrances... [C]
Jackson came out to be Christian’s partner. Not a tough one, but I called it...
3. William Regal and Vladimir Kozlov defeated Christian and Ezekiel Jackson in 5:08. Jackson stared down Kozlov as Christian stared at him. The SummerSlam opponents started the match. Matthews focused more on the opportunity to see Kozlov vs. Jackson for the first time while Striker reminded us about the ECW Championship match at SummerSlam...
Twill’s Two Cents: Honestly, they could save Jackson vs. Kozlov for a “cleared out” time at the Royal Rumble and the crowd would pop huge for it.
[Overrun] Kozlov dominated Christian and the heel team traded tags while Big Zeke waited on the apron. Christian hit a springboard sunset flip but Kozlov broke up the pinfall attempt. Zeke went after Kozlov but didn’t get to him. Jackson hit the super Rock Bottom on Christian and Regal covered him for the win...
Kozlov and Jackson hit their finishers on Christian. Regal, Jackson, and Kozlov raised their arms in the center of the ring in celebration...
Twill’s Two Cents: Why the hell not? I liked this. Kozlov and Jackson didn’t hug or anything, so they could still have tension but they are temporarily working with Regal. Why would Jackson side with the guy who has the title he wants? It made perfect sense and it also made the ECW Title picture a lot more interesting.
