|
WWE Smackdown on MyNetworkTV
Taped in Edmonton, Canada
[Q1] The opening montage aired and J.R. ran thru the main events for the night. Video was shown of the main event from last week. C.M. Punk was introduced to major heat by Tony Chimmel. Punk said that Teddy Long mentioned that the TLC match was Jeff’s specialty. He said that Teddy was wrong and he mentioned that he competed and won MITB twice. He said he can waste his time by telling the crowd about what is right and wrong and he called everyone Jeff Hardy’s slaves. He says anything he says will make them cheer more for Jeff.
He ripped the fans more about drug abuse and alcohol and he said he has to end Jeff Hardy. He says he lives his life the right way and he wants Jeff one on one with no family ties. Punk says it’s typical that Jeff will screw it up and he called him disappointed because he will not make it to Summerslam. Teddy Long comes out to the ring to confront Punk. Long said that what he did last week was deplorable and he could of ended Jeff’s career. He said Jeff will be here and he is in no condition to compete but he will be at Summerslam.
He mentioned that Punk will face John Morrison. Punk said that he is sick of Long and he will beat Morrison. Jeff Hardy music interrupts Punk and he came out to a huge pop. Jeff looks like he been in the sun a little too long. Jeff said he is in Punk’s face and nothing will stop him from defending his belt at Summerslam. Jeff was selling the injuries while cutting the promo. Punk smiled while Jeff was selling the injuries.
[Q2]The announcers talked about Kane abducting Ranjin Singh last week. Video was shown of the abduction last week. J.R. mentioned that Kane brought Singh to the arena. [C]
Mind of Marv: Interesting opening segment. Punk continues to get more heat and Jeff Hardy cannot be more over. This should be a classic match for Summerslam but I wished John Morrison was in the match because it would easily be match of the year. But without Morrison, it’s still capable of being a classic match.
The show returned with Teddy Long answering his phone to Vince McMahon. Vince ordered Jeff to compete tonight and mentioned that Teddy is still on probation. The match is a handicap match with the Hart Dynasty facing Jeff Hardy.
Video was shown of the IC title fatal four way match from last week. They hyped the IC title match for Summerslam.
1. Dolph Ziggler defeated Finlay in 8:50. The match started with Finlay taking the advantage with elbows to Dolph. Dolph went for a baseball slide but Finlay caught him outside. Dolph pushed Finlay into the ringpost and kicked his head into the ringpost. Dolph went for the cover but with was a one count and Mike Knox made his way to the ring. [C]
The show returned with Dolph still having the advantage with kicks to Finlay’s gut. He worked on Finlay’s neck while Knox observed the matchup. Dolph went to the top rope and he tried to land on Finlay but Finlay countered with a boot to Dolph’s face.
[Q3] Finlay got back on the offense with a cannonball and he threw Dolph outside of the ring. Finlay hit a clothesline to Dolph outside of the ring. Knox got involved by taking the shelleigh and hitting Finlay in his leg. Dolph finished Finlay off with the Zig Zag.
Post match, Knox tired to hit Finlay again but Knox beat him up and threw him outside of the ring. Knox crushed Finlay’s back on the ring steps. Knox went on the say that the slightest trauma could leave him in excruciating pain.
Mind of Marv: This match wasn’t that spectacular to me. I started to get bored halfway through the match and it was just a dud to me. Damn, Knox sounds intelligent as hell. A bad ass heel sounding like a school teacher…interesting.
The announcers hype both of the main events tonight. Backstage, Kane was torturing Ranjin Singh. Kane said that he wants to hear from Khali. [C]
An R-Truth video was shown. Maria and Melina were backstage and Maria was talking about Summerslam and how she will be getting there early to go out with Dolph. Layla came in and started to hate on Maria. Layla also mentioned that Michelle McCool will be returning next week. Melina said her message is that she wants her in the ring. John Morrison made his way to the ring for his match against C.M. Punk. [C]
[Q4] 2. CM Punk defeated John Morrison in 13:40. Morrison went for a rollup early in the match and then he went for Punk’s arm. Punk kicked Morrison and Morrison hit a springboard on Punk for a nearfall. Morrison hit the Chuck Kick to Punk for a nearfall. Punk hit double knees to Morrison’s head. [C]
The match returned with a body scissors on Morrison. Punk slung Morrison to the ringpost but Morrison countered with a flying crossbody to Punk for a nearfall. Punk worked on Morrison’s neck. Morrison hit a inverted backbreaker to a side Russian leg sweep for a nearfall. Morrison hit a dropkick and a standing moonsault for a nearfall. Morrison hit another flying crossbody for a nearfall. Punk went for an inside cradle for a nearfall. Punk hit the Three Strikes for a nearfall. Punk said Nap Time and went for the GTS but Punk ran Morrison head into the turnbuckle and hit a bulldog for a nearfall.
[Q5] Punk continued with kicks and Morrison countered with an armbar DDT for a nearfall. Morrison went for Starship Pain but Punk moved and Morrison went for the Oklahoma Roll for a nearfall. Morrison went for Starship Pain again but Punk countered by kicking Morrison in the gut in the corner of the ring. Punk hit the GTS to win the match. Jeff hardy’s match is later tonight. [C]
Mind of Marv: Very entertaining main event for the most part. It seem logical to let Punk win this match because if he didn’t it would make sense for Punk (the Number One contender) with three losses to Morrison. Both guys worked hard in this match and I wished this was the actual main event to close the show.
Melina and Layla made their way to the ring for their matchup. Meanwhile, Kane was still torturing Singh backstage and Kane said that he is running out of patience…[C]
Mind of Marv: This Kane torture theater is getting more hilarious by the minute and it would be 100 times better if he was feuding with someone else.
3. Melina defeated Layla in 3:30. The match started with a rat race outside of the ring. Layla go the early advantage by working on Melina in the corner. Layla hit a standing facebuster for a nearfall. Layla used Melina foot to get an advantage; the crowd was chanting “Let’s Go Oilers” because they were obviously bored with the match. Melina hit the double knees on Layla.
[Q6] Melina hit a flapjack and her finisher to end the matchup. The DX video from this Monday will be shown later tonight.
Mind of Marv: Forgettable match. But Layla is getting better in the ring which is good.
Cryme Tyme came out to good pop from the crowd for a promo. Shad said that JTG got mad skills because he beat him last week. Shad talked about how JeriShow brags about their careers and how they will leave Summerslam as the new unified tag champs. [C]
4. Big Show (w/Chris Jericho) squashed JTG (w/ Shad) in 3:28. Show clotheslined and slammed JTG. Jericho was on commentary for the match. Show chopped and worked on JTG’s arm. Show threw JTG and threw him out of the ring. Jericho threw Shad into the ringpost. Show chokeslammed and put JTG in the Colossal Clutch for the victory. Post match, Shad knocked Show outside of the ring and started to hulk up.
Mind of Marv: Damn a 3 ½ minute squash match? How do you have JTG go over Jericho last week and then get destroyed the next week???
[Q7] Backstage, Khali was looking for Singh and Kane beat the crap out of him with a lead pipe. He locked Khali in a cage and destroyed him Mortal Kombat style and said he is never been afraid of Khali and now he should be afraid of him. [C]
Mind of Marv: The beating was just as hilarious as Punk beating on Jeff last week. I love this Attitude-Esq. Kane beating on Khali (like that) is quality TV.
The video of the DX/Legacy fiasco was shown and the Summerslam card was run down by the announcers. The tanned Jeff Hardy came out to a standing ovation and the announcers put him over. [C]
[Q8]5. The Hart Dynasty defeated World Heavyweight Champion Jeff Hardy in a handicap match in 5:04. Kidd and Jeff began the match. Jeff hit the Poetry in Motion on Kidd and DH came in and got the advantage. DH hit a neck breaker to Jeff for a nearfall. The heels started to take advantage of the matchup by working on Jeff’s neck. Jeff went for Whisper in the Wind but DH pushed him off the rope. DH picked up Kidd for the crossbody but Jeff moved out of the way.
Jeff hit the facebuster suplex on DH and attempted the Swanton but Kidd interfered. Jeff went for the Twist of Fate but DH countered with a big boot. The Harts hit the Hart Attack for the win.
Post match, Punk came to the ring and beat the hell of Jeff for the third week in a row. John Morrison came out to help, but Punk smacked him with a chair. Punk dragged Jeff and tried to do the same thing from last week, but Matt Hardy ran out and he cleared house. Morrison helped clear the house with Matt. The brothers looked at each other and Matt helped Jeff up. They had some short words to say and Jeff continued to sell the injuries.
Teddy Long and Vince were backstage and Long said it will be a six man tag match next week with Punk and The Hart Dynasty vs. The Hardys and John Morrison. Vince smiled but he still said that Teddy was on probation.
Mind of Marv: Forgettable main event with a predictable result. Punk looks stronger with the beating he has given Jeff for the past three weeks. This six man match for next week should be interesting and I’m sad that I won’t be able to cover it. Overall, this show was OK, but nothing to brag about, B-/C+ for me.
Rich Twilling will have the Smackdown Hitlist available in the morning & I will be taking a couple of weeks off because I am moving to the East Coast. Shoot some emails at mr.hermanstyne@gmail.com and I will be back at the end of the month or early next month.
